Taiwan says F-16 deliveries delayed, working to minimise damage

quote:

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng said on Thursday that the delivery of 66 advanced new F-16Vs from the United States has been delayed due to supply chain disruptions and the ministry was working to minimise the damage and "make up deficiencies".

quote:

The first of the new F-16Vs was meant to be delivered in the fourth quarter of this year but that has been delayed to the third quarter of next year due to pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, the ministry said.

There's been quite a few delays in US weapons to Taiwan due to supply chain issues and Ukraine getting priority.

Park in front of presidential office to be named 'Yongsan Children's Garden'

quote:

The park in front of the presidential office in Yongsan will be named the "Yongsan Children's Garden" to highlight its purpose for children and families, an official said Monday.

The land adjacent to the presidential office building is being transformed into a large park after U.S. Forces Korea returned the plot to the Korean government as part of the relocation of its headquarters to Pyeongtaek, 60 kilometers south of Seoul.

...

"We decided to show our commitment to giving our future generations a garden where they can freely enjoy fair opportunities," the presidential official said.

Civic groups, “contamination cleanup first” in Yongsan Park, which is about to open next month

quote:

On the 4th of next month, on the first anniversary of President Yoon Seok-yeol’s inauguration, Yongsan Park using the return site from the US military base was scheduled to be opened to the public, and civic groups urged Yongsan Park to clean up the pollution and stop opening it.

...

Meanwhile, the government plans to transform the return site of the USFK base into a ‘Yongsan Children’s Garden’ next month and open it to the general public. However, civic groups are raising concerns, saying that harmful substances such as arsenic and dioxin were found to exceed environmental standards at the time of temporary opening last year.

Land for Yongsan Park to Be Returned in June Also Smothered in Carcinogens, But Government Insists on Opening the Site in September Without Any Cleanup

quote:

The government claims that the danger of carcinogens is not high since this area was used as the USFK residence, but an inspection by the Ministry of Environment revealed that there were three oil leaks in this area alone. The government plans to open some of the area without any cleanup operations this year.

...

Inspectors found over ten carcinogens including copper and nickel and the contamination rate exceeded the standards for Area 1 in 119,250m2 or 82% of the 144,626m2 residential and school area. They also found total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH), a pollutant from oil, in the groundwater at a level that was 2.73 times higher than the legal standard. If the government wants to turn this site into a park, it has to make sure that the soil contamination level fulfills the standard for Area 1 according to the Soil Environment Conservation Act, but the level of contamination exceeded the standards for all substances.

In some areas, the government even detected dioxin, a Group 1 carcinogen. The highest concentration of the toxic substance was confirmed to be 5,568.7 pg-teq/g, which is 34.8 times higher than the standard for Area 1, which will be applied beginning this July. Dioxin is considered the most toxic man-made substance. Once it enters the human body, it is not easily decomposed and released. So it continues to cause harm. According to the inspectors, there was 39.9 times the Area 1 standard of arsenic, another Group 1 carcinogen; 23.4 times the Area 1 standard of TPH; and 7.2 times of xylene, which can cause pneumonia.

...

The report also included an analysis showing that dioxin was released in the process of burning and burying garbage. The report claimed that the ashes from the incinerator were scattered, contaminating the surface soil. The ashes then seeped into the soil mixed with rainwater spreading the pollution. Choi Yeong, an activist of the Korea Federation of Environmental Movements in Seoul said, “The toxicity of ash from incineration is a problem that has been known for decades. There is no way that the USFK did not know this.” He further argued, “Failing to properly seal the ashes and just letting them blow in the wind was very irresponsible, and clearly a mistake by the U.S. Forces.”

The government plans to open some of the land it will receive back in June and some of the residential areas it received from the USFK last February after only makeshift measures and no cleanup operation within this year. Kim Eun-hui, head of the Yongsan Park Citizens’ Council said, “The oil leaks in the residential and school area in the site to be returned in June were known even in the past,” and argued, “Yet the government is stressing the safety of its plan to temporarily open the area claiming that it was used for homes and schools. This is deceiving the people and neglecting safety.”

HELL SERPENT
Lipstick Apathy

quote:

[The Philippines' first Miss Universe winner,] Gloria Diaz has shared her two cents about the Miss Universe organization's decision to allow single mothers, pregnant, married, divorced, and trans women to compete in the prestigious pageant.

In a recent interview with entertainment site PUSH, Gloria said that such women should not be allowed to join Miss Universe as it would not be in line with the name of the competition itself, "[In that case, it should be called 'Universe', drop the 'Miss.', because that it wouldn't be 'Miss' anymore, right? Just 'Universe.']"

[She] clarified, however, that this is merely her personal opinion on the matter, saying that these women should instead have their own contest.

"[M]y personal opinion—which is not to be taken in the negative way—[they should have their own contest. There could be a Mrs. Universe, a Lesbian Universe, a Tranny Universe,]" Gloria told the entertainment outlet.

"There is room for so much. [Different categories, here and there. Because even in Mrs. Universe, so many of the candidates are already mothers. But that's okay]," she added.

The new eligibility requirement was announced in August last year through a memo from Miss Universe CEO Amy Emmerich that was forwarded to national directors.

"Effective with the 72nd Miss Universe competition and national preliminary competitions leading up to it, women who are or have been married, as well as women who are pregnant or have children, will be able to compete," the email read.

This is a significant development for the overall nature of the pageant as titleholders were previously stripped of their crowns for bearing a child.

As for transwomen, they had already been made eligible to compete since 2013, brought about by media outcry when Canadian contestant Jenna Talackova was disqualified from the contest because she was not a "naturally born female."

"It’s hard. It’s a very new idea [that for me is]… not very acceptable," Gloria said. "[They should be segregated!] At least it gives people more chances, [right? Because you're representing this country. But if it's about the more beautiful woman, or the more beautiful tranny... a tranny would be more difficult to beat.]"

The first openly transgender contestant to join the global Miss Universe contest was Miss Spain Ángela Maria Ponce Camacho back in 2018. When asked about her reaction to this, Gloria said: "[I do not find this acceptable. Because they should have their own contest.] Not that I’m ostracizing them, but they’re good at some things eh."

She then compared this to the issue of how transgender athletes are now being subjected to controversy.

"[Isn't there an issue right now, about the so-called transvestite athletes, who join competitions for women? Isn't it a big issue because it's like, you can never be, you can never be]. You’ll always be stronger. So, [they won at swimming. Isn't it all over the internet that it's unfair?]"

"[They're so strong, and the wingspan, it's so big!] And then it’s very uncomfortable being in the dressing room with them, [right],” she added.

The Miss Universe Philippines is set to hold the national costume competition and the preliminary rounds on May 4 and 10, respectively. Three single mothers, including Eileen Gonzales, Clare Dacanay, and Joemay-An Leo, are among the candidates vying for the highly coveted MUPh crown on May 10. The winner will represent the Philippines in El Salvador at the 72nd Miss Universe tilt this year.

It is clearly safe because a lot of the leaks were near the elementary school and residences, and the USA wouldn't poison their own people. Now let me take a big sip of water and see whats going on stateside...

Lol no dude getting to the point of being in the running for that poo poo only happens when you've spent your entire life on the pageant circuit being mercilessly crafted by a sort of multilayered industrial misogyny, it really fucks those ladies up. Nobody just gets airdropped into that poo poo by virtue of being pretty. The ones that stick it out to the end basically have Stockholm syndrome and become the next generation of female camp guards who perpetuate the system.

From the sounds of it, that app was doing some incredibly dodgy stuff.

But from what I'm reading the version they find with all the malware was not on the Google play store, but on some other store.
