We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

Maybe it's just the angle of the video, but I can't help but wonder if the intended target wasn't the dome itself but rather the flag above it. (Hey, if you're doing an operation that's mostly symbolic anyway, you may as well go all out.)

Its this. Without a computer literally constantly adjusting the whole thing, it falls down.

Per Wikipedia

Lockheed incorporated into its bid a text written by the Soviet-Russian physicist Pyotr Ufimtsev from 1962, titled Method of Edge Waves in the Physical Theory of Diffraction, Soviet Radio, Moscow, 1962. In 1971 this book was translated into English with the same title by U.S. Air Force, Foreign Technology Division.[18] The theory played a critical role in the design of American stealth-aircraft F-117 and B-2.[19][20][21] Equations outlined in the paper quantified how a plane's shape would affect its detectability by radar, termed radar cross-section (RCS).[22] At the time, the Soviet Union did not have supercomputer capacity to solve these equations for actual designs. This was applied by Lockheed in computer simulation to design a novel shape they called the "Hopeless Diamond"

According to Skunkworks, another factor was that most people in aviation at Lockheed simply had no interest in the subject. Radar cross sections were, according to the author, seen as weird trivia of no use to anyone. He cited that it was one of his engineers who not only read the paper, realized that Lockheed had the resources, and, critically, that it would lead to something useful. The author notes that he, and the rest of Lockheed's leadership, was intensely skeptical it would be useful until this one engineer ran some rough calculations and proved just how wild things could get.

My favorite Skunkworks RCS story is that the A-12’s profile was designed to reduce RCS, and it did!

… but the enormous amount of turbulence and heat from traveling through the air at mach 3 reflected radar real good regardless of the actual plane’s profile.

The false flag theory is weird to me, because that was my immediate takeaway as well. You couldn't possibly get a more symbolic gesture of counting coup than flying your drone over the very well known seat of power of your enemy and just blowing up the flag on top of it.

IIRC they had the same problem with the Sea Shadow too. They could get a RCS from the wake and waves around it so you just had to look for the mysteriously quiet small patch of water.

While there might be nuclear sabre rattling from the usual suspects, I think that if this is a false flag operation (and I suspect it is) it's being done to help manufacture consent for another round of mass mobilizations as the Russian army has sustained ghastly casualties around Bakhmut and is going to need another huge wave of conscripts to try and bog down Ukrainian forces wherever they advance.

Russia's losses during this whole self-made tragedy must be astronomical. Probably around 200k casualties all told, plus another quarter of a million or more that fled the country and who won't be able to return for a very long time even if they want to?

I don’t know about that ship specifically, but yeah that’s a problem for stealth surface ships. We used to run into it with pleasure crafts a lot - they’re mostly fibreglass so depending on settings a navigation radar might not get you a good return. But their wake, though? That’s bright as day. Big V pointing where the boat is.

Zelensky went to (might still be there I guess?) Helsinki to meet the Nordic leaders, wonder what flight path he used to get there. Guessing he didn’t overfly Belarus. Would you dare go through that gap in Poland between Belarus and Kaliningrad, probably not right? It’s polish airspace, but all it’d take is an AA launcher on the russian side of the border with a leaked flightplan. Train to Poland and out into international airspace over the Baltic with a NATO escort?

Filmed a video released just now in a field *covered* in Russian bodies, explicitly blaming Shoigu and Gerasimov. Profane fury unusual even for Prigozhin, who usually talks like the ex-con he is.

Covering his rear end because he knows Ukraine's about to come calling. Still, issuing a video like this would get literally anyone else in Russia arrested.

He's painting himself as the REAL Russian military defender, not like those effete not-even-Russian scoundrels in Moscow (Shoigu is Tuvan). The whole past year he's been trying to be an alternate power base, fighting on and off with the Russian MoD who have variously demoted, ignored, and promoted figures associated with him -- the logistics guy fired this month was widely assumed to be siphoning goods off to Wagner and now is on Wagner's payroll officially, for example.

He's been untouchable because Putin likes him, Wagner gives Russia a justification-free military force to do warcrimes all over the globe with and he up until now knew just how far to push the line. This bit today is on a whole other level though and is going to be hard to walk back. Prigozhin may have decided that Russia is going to *badly* lose to the Ukranian offensive and no longer cares what Shoigu and Gerasimov can do to him.
