Its over for St. HIMARS, the orcs have adapted

https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/05/politics/russia-jamming-himars-rockets-ukraine/index.html

Russia has been thwarting US-made mobile rocket systems in Ukraine more frequently in recent months, using electronic jammers to throw off its GPS guided targeting system to cause rockets to miss their targets, multiple people briefed on the matter told CNN.

Ukrainian military officials, with the US’ help, have had to come up with a variety of different workarounds as it continues to use the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) which has been perhaps the most revered and feared piece of weaponry in Ukraine’s fight.

The medium-range rocket systems were hailed as a game changer in the conflict and have played a key role since the moment they arrived in Ukraine last summer, including in last year’s offensive that allowed Ukraine to take back significant swaths of territory from Russia.

But in recent months, the systems have been rendered increasingly less effective by the Russians’ intensive blocking, five US, British and Ukrainian sources tell CNN, forcing US and Ukrainian officials to find ways to tweak the HIMARS’ software to counter the evolving Russian jamming efforts.

quote:

GPS jamming can affect other “smart” US munitions like the precision-guided Excalibur artillery shells fired from Howitzers and air-dropped bombs called JDAMs. The leaked Pentagon document described the JDAMS as being particularly susceptible to the disruption.

A US official confirmed that the US has been advising the Ukrainians on how to identify and destroy Russian jammers since there are a limited number of ways to modify HIMARS and their rockets.

Pentagon official downplays impact of jamming efforts
A senior Pentagon official downplayed the impact of the interference, telling CNN that on Monday Ukrainian forces fired 18 rockets without issue, about the daily rate of the past few weeks. The official declined to comment on the broader impact of the jamming. HIMARS are manufactured by Lockheed Martin, which deferred questions on jamming to the US government.

18 rockets a day does not sound like a war winning wunderwaffen to be honest. I guess they set up, launch a rocket or two, then have to flee the scene before counter battery fire destroys them. It doesn't really paint Ukraine as being in charge anywhere along the front

Yeah 18 rockets a day coupled with some of those rockets are only using inertial guidance is really isn't much to speak about at all. That, coupled with the very low reserves of heavier artillery shells and the use of field guns suggests the Russians are using the "go-slow" approach because the Ukrainians really have a limited ability to strike back, especially further away from the frontlines.

It also means you going to have continual slow grinding conflict where the Russians will continue to bait the Ukrainians into kill zones but aren't really under any rush. It does leave open the question of if the Russians are going to ever use their reserves in an offensive manner or if the war will just drag on as is.

Its probably not *great* to get hit with a 200 lb warhead, but barring lucky shots directly into an ammo stockpile I don't think one or two is going to completely obliterate an enemy outpost. HIMARS seems more like a harassment system

The issue is if they are jamming the GPS trackers, it really isn't going to be that accurate, and 200lb isn't going to be do range over a wide area (a pion HE shell actually has more explosives in it), basically they need a lucky shot if they want to do any damage. It is light harassment at best unless they can hit an unjammed area.

(It may not be completely apples to apples but the inertial guidance on a Tochka C is a CEP of about 70 meters, but that is with a warhead that is also about 10 times the size.)

If something knows where it was, then tracks all the movements it makes, it should be able to work out where it currently is. It works for awhile but gets increasingly inaccurate the longer the system goes without an outside fix.

An inertial navigation system (INS) is a navigation device that uses motion sensors (accelerometers), rotation sensors (gyroscopes) and a computer to continuously calculate by dead reckoning the position, the orientation, and the velocity (direction and speed of movement) of a moving object without the need for external references.[1] Often the inertial sensors are supplemented by a barometric altimeter and sometimes by magnetic sensors (magnetometers) and/or speed measuring devices.

Basically, it is an internalized system that attempts to keep (in this case) a rocket on a certain course to more accurately hit a target. The problem is without external information (i.e GPS data) it doesn't know where that target is in relation to itself if it gets jammed at a significant distance from a target.

Admittedly, the rocket in this case may have used up its motor at the point it is jammed, but it isn't going to be able to adjust itself correctly without additional data, and using its inertial navigation just isn't going to be as accurate. The problem is that if the warhead is moderately sized, it may not actually do that much damage, and if you are only firing 18 or so, you can see the issue.

Russian jamming systems can be pretty long range as well,
so it be jammed a fair amount away from the target.
