Speaking as a terrible amateur player, it could be cos we learn flats before sharps and so they still feel easier somehow. Real musos probably have a proper reason though!

Mister Speaker posted:Forgot to get back to you sooner on this. I've heard this before from brass players, can you elaborate why you cats prefer flats? Yeah, for whatever reason brass folks (I think maybe all bandos) learn flat keys first. Order may be something like Bb, F, Eb, C. ETA: oh, of course, probably a large part of it is that a lot of wind instruments are pitched in flat keys (Bb for pretty much all brass, clarinets, and tenor sax; Eb for alto sax). So particularly for your typical brass instrument, open notes are in the key of F/Bb for most of a beginner/intermediate range. hooah has a new favorite as of 23:07 on May 7, 2023 |

Yeah it's because it's transposed from "Concert C" to B Flat for many wind instruments. Somebody with a better memory for theory class can tell us why it wasn't A#

It's cos A# is kind of a dee dee dee sound and B flat is a doo doo doo sound I'll be taking no further questions at this time

I was always told it is flat if you're moving down the scale and sharp when moving up Seems logical to me!

Soul Dentist posted:Yeah it's because it's transposed from "Concert C" to B Flat for many wind instruments. Somebody with a better memory for theory class can tell us why it wasn't A# There was a time (several hundred years ago) when they started playing with tuning and scales. Initially every note had a half or quarter-step sharp and flat, for one thing. I'm not a musicologist, but there had to be compromises in the scales to make certain chords and progressions work (the circle of fifths, IIRC), called tempering. Bach's composition The Well-Tempered Clavier was written to show a particular tempering scheme and how it sounded (which Bach was promoting, of course). Eventually, certain sharps and flats were eliminated in the pursuit of chord structure, and the modern keyboard groupings of black keys in 3s and 2s emerged.
