It was pretty clear Darkest Dungeon 2 was going to be a mess as soon as the devs revealed a 3D style that would kill the game's sizable mod community.

Of all the things one might hope to see in a sequel, "strong upgrade to the graphics while remaining faithful to the aesthetic" is universally welcome.

Tell that to the Disgaea fandom. 3D models instead of sprites was quite the unwelcomed change for most.

Add me another one who just didn't jive with Darkest Dungeons. I Kickstarted it and I don't regret helping a developer make the game they wanted to make but the end product just wasn't for me. I just couldn't get into the combat and the triage and failure mitigation was a bit too much for me. Glad it found its audience, though.

That's totally fair and it's possible the sequel will appeal to people who didn't dig the first one. I'm glad they didn't just make the same game again - I kinda feel like the first one was a thorough examination of that game, and we don't need another one. If people don't like DD2 on its merits that's fine. I was just amazed by how many people were upset that it wasn't the first one again.

For my utterly pointless two cents I didn’t find the failure spiral nature of DD1 super enjoyable, I wanted a tactical game not so much a tactical game with an almost unavoidable tax on basically everything you did (stress.) Utterly unmatched vibes though.

Not that “a game long delayed will turn out good” has ever been true but that sure is a long tail on a game with already massive expectations, I don’t imagine that ending up well.

Rather that gamers don’t self-manage expectations well and it’s very hard, deservedly or not, for a sequel to live up to a phenomenon first entry. I expect the game itself to be fantastic but since it won’t be the second coming some people will find that unacceptable after the wait.

because like, psychonauts 2 took forever to happen and get made and it was very highly received by critics and fans

The follow-up to Subnautica kind of followed that path. It wasn’t meant to be a full sequel so they tried to manage expectations, but it was in development for 3 years and came out in a somewhat disappointing state.

That Miyamoto quote is dumb. A delayed game CAN eventually be good, but time is no guarantee especially for something with a troubled development cycle.

Not that I really expect the Hollow Knight DLC to turn out the same way. It sounds more like they ended up wanting to put more effort into it than they initially planned for, which is great if they’re up for it.

HK1 is a solidly good game from about a hundred different angles so they can take it in any direction they want within reason and it'll turn out fine. The only way the game could turn out bad is if the boss design suddenly became terrible and after two dozen good ones in the first game that doesn't really seem likely.

Darkest Dungeon 2 :v:

More realistically I meant the fact that the video game hype train often vastly outpaces the actual game, the sequel part I don’t recall coming into play very much. That’s more of a suspicion about the potential reaction to Silksong if they make any major changes from the first game or it isn’t just so, just because gamers will be gamers and people are ravenous for Silksong in particular.

Though to be clear I have zero issues with being wrong here, happy to be.

the real problem with that game was that the underwater world design was a lot worse than the original. there was a clear path of progression in the first game as you upgraded your stuff and went deeper and deeper, but the followup scattered everything around and made for a much more confusing and irritating progression through the campaign. i still kinda liked it but i didn't love it like the original game

i even thought the on-foot stuff was fine and a nice shakeup, but the world map was just mediocre

I honestly can’t see a backlash happening. The Hollow Knight fandom feels more like the ones for Undertale or Outer Wilds, where it’s more “you’ve already given us our favorite game of all time so y’all can do no wrong”. Like, the Outer Wilds DLC was way more contentious than the base game but it didn’t get overblown hate for it, and even detractors still loved just having the opportunity to return to that world. I’d imagine a similar situation happening if Silksong is mid (but also Silksong will not be mid so it’s a moot point).

Umineko wasn't well liked in Japan and the author basically in game says thank you bootleg english translators for making this worthwhile

It's hard to think of answers to your question because it requires a lot of things to happen 1. a successful first game 2. a meaningfully different second game in the same series (most devs just make a new game under a different brand) 3. a long dev time 4. existing fan rejection of the game 5. a different audience saying hey this is actually great
