Dan Harmon is a ridiculously gifted writer. Community has stretches of brilliance, and when R&M was firing on all cylinders, it was a good show with some very creative ideas. His podcast was an experience, he'd pretty often just talk out story ideas, seemingly off the top of his head, while drunk on stage with his fiancee and friends. He'd also freestyle rap poorly, frequently. He is a weirdo drunk who oscillates between deifying himself and sounding like he's about to walk into the sea. This is the guy that had the lead of his new TV show say this: quote:I discovered at a very early age that if I talk long enough, I can make anything right or wrong. So either I'm God or truth is relative. You can see the megalomania way back in like 2009. If he could reign that in a bit I think everyone would be happier.

The extra hosed up thing about The Good Doctor is that partway through, there's an episode featuring another (undiagnosed) autistic character, and his portrayal actually mostly works. He's got the habits and minor ticks, but is actually written as a person first and an autist second. Then of course the episode ends, the production learns nothing, and the main character remains a massive caricature stumbling from one meltdown to the next. e: Fun fact: That character is played by Christian Clemenson, who previously played a different autistic character in Boston Legal. And while that portrayal was still fairly stereotypical (on account of airing in like 2005), it sure was a drat sight better than The loving Good Doctor. Also I'm not sure Die Hard belongs on that list since John McClane's not a tortured genius rear end in a top hat. He's suppose to be a skilled everyman, a bit cynical but a good guy.

It was such a terrible and plain weird choice to first go "Look, there's a whole bunch of rebellious stormtroopers!" and then just a few minutes later completely gently caress it up with "they all escaped their conditioning only because they were touched by the force". It teased an interesting popular uprising angle, but nah it just turns out that these stormtroopers were basically all handpicked by providence to deserve to live, while all the rest remain faceless cannon fodder. Motherfucker just can't not write a Chosen Ones plot.

People just learning that these shows exist is also a great indicator of who does or doesn't watch football, because most NFL games are on the big three networks and these shows get promoted relentlessly during them. It's a peek into an alternate universe several times a game. The Good Doctor also has The Bachelor as a lead-in, which is probably even more popular while also being completely goon-unfriendly.

Besides, commercial breaks in primetime games are for checking your phone and shitposting in the GDT. RedZone and Scott Hanson 4 ever

It's also not a telling metric when comparing a cable show to a network show. For example Community, a show constantly on the verge of cancelation outperformed 95% of cable shows until the last season. There's outliers of course, The Walking Dead was the highest rated show on TV for several seasons beating out even Sunday Night Football. It's a fracturing of the market thing, the highest rated show of the 90s, ER, wouldn't have lasted a season if they put the same ratings even 10 years earlier. It was one of AMC's first original shows and had a long leash because it had critical acclaim (see also Mad Men, which peaked at 3.5 million). Got on Netflix before season 4, became a word of mouth sensation, so by the time season 5 comes around it's appointment television and you had to watch it live to avoid spoilers. That final run was my senior year of college and basically everyone I knew would scramble to find a place to watch it every Sunday night, then basically have group therapy because it was so stressful!
