IIRC at the start of the 20th century there was a significant contingent of professional mathematicians who still hadn't accepted negative numbers. What and when was the sword in Homestuck? I fell off during a big hiatus, just before John (gently caress I think his name was John) got the cosmic/comic retcon powers and before Vriska got retconned back. The SORD…… is pretty early in the comic, relatively speaking. Certainly well before you’d have fallen off, but it’s a stupid gag in between a whole lot of equally stupid gags that it’s entirely fair to forget it entirely.

It was my understanding that negative real numbers (and imaginary/complex numbers) didn't have principal square roots. So -1 would have two square roots, i and -i, but √-1 would be undefined, what with the numbering issue. Apparently I was remembering wrong though. I was mostly doing a bit in the edits, but tbh I still don't like it. It's not even continuous for negative reals (on the complex plane). So inelegant, even if it's useful for something.
