Isn't That Right, Chairman?

TF2 puts weapons in crates and then makes you pay to open them. I'd say that counts as gacha.

The funny thing is that they’ll do a mission and then talk to everyone on the citadel and then the Normandy and then read the codex and stop for the day. The next day, they start off talking to everyone on the Normandy and you just hear a bunch of “hey commander”

In yesterday’s session, they hit the casino. Brooks told them to mingle while she gets into position, so they mingled with every single available person and exhausted their dialogue before they even let Brooks into the vents. So at some points, they have to wait for the next goal so they mingle but no one is talking since they used up all of the dialogue.

Reggie hard locking into a romance with Steve the instant it's available on accident is a hilarious contrast to the rest of the methodical playthrough of the game.

He was using some mod that makes it truly turn based instead of ATB, and hence breaks a bunch of poo poo. He turned it off this episode but clearly did so under duress, whining that he hates ATB.

E: it's funny though, even WITH that and occasional Woolie-ing in menus, this is still the best, most smoothly paced Woolie LP in ages.

I sort of cradled my head in my hands while laughing at this. The episode where he explains that it breaks SEVERAL boss fights, but it's OK, because he totally did the research and is prepared for it!

Peak Woolie, 10/10. It's amazing how hard he'll go for hacky solutions with garbage effort to payout ratio.

Yeah, from what I saw, it took 4 years for Steam to add trading so it was either open them yourself or buy gift wrap to give it to people as far as I can tell.

Tiki torches on fire off the summit of Kilauea.
I watched disco balls glitter in the dark near the Brandenburg Gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like crowds in rain.

Time to sleep.
He might've used it for that but he definitely used it for half-life black mesa.

Woolie has to do everything the "Woolie Way™", if it's not some kludgy solution he perceives as original, then he will somehow evaporate into dust. Hyperbole aside, his issue with menu navigation boggles the mind sometimes, especially if you've ever worked on UX. Makes any effort feel pointless, but I dunno, maybe one can catch bugs doing it that way.

I just think it's funny that both Woolie and Reggie worked in QA, and they installed a mod that breaks boss fights and regen spells.

No-one is made to engage with like 99% of lootboxes/gatcha/mtx, but it's not "brainworms" to be manipulated by those systems.

TF2 is absolutely not the worst, but it is absolutely obnoxious trying to get the various unique weapons - using keys on crates is probably the worst proposition/option, and anyone who knows, doesn't. But getting the guns otherwise is pretty obnoxious given the drop system is entirely RNG, and being able to craft particular weapons using other highly specific RNG drops is very ????

and engaging with the trade system kind of suck rear end.

Dabir

You can just buy most of the weapons outright if you want, but the prices are a bit of a ripoff. The community has done their best to make the trade system as painless as possible, and the fact that there is one is a quantum leap above most gacha trash.

I'd argue that the trade system kind of makes TF2 insidious in some different ways from other lootbox/gatcha game, largely because you can exchange your poo poo for steam credit, which is almost as good as real money. If you can engage with it a healthy way, yeah it makes getting all the unique weapons a lot less painless then it could otherwise be. But otherwise, it kind of only intensifies the gambling aspect of crates.

I honestly feel like if TF2 just gave people all the functionally unique weapons, it probably wouldn't make a noticeable dent in the profit the game brings in, since I'm sure that like 99% of that is from people chasing unusuals.

not to toot my own horn or anything, but I had a series of emails I sent in to the all-timer podcast Idle Thumbs about my experiences in the TF2 hat economy. For years I helped goons offload stuff they randomly got opening a couple crates that were worth substantial money, and encountered some of the worst aspects of humanity in that time.

I think there should be a less random, more pursuable progression system for getting all the unique weapon functions, but I feel like starting with the stock gear for each class is an important learning experience. Those weapons are supposed to be the generalist options that are viable in basically all situations, while also not having a bunch of complicated stats and extra effects to overwhelm new players.

I dont really disagree, but the ship has long sailed on "TF2 has clean design principles." Like, one of those non-stock weapons will probably drop within 20 minutes to an hour of some new player starting up.

Research and prep-work have really never been strong points of Super Best Friends, and both Woolie and Pat continue the legacy.
