WaPo also ran an article today taking about how Zelensky has been considering carrying out covert operations against Russian targets in Syria via the YPJ and also taking territory in Russia itself. I understand that the Russians are likely aware of this info given how fast it spread once it leaked, but at the same time I do wonder whether this would be the type of detail to hold onto maybe after the war ends.

This sort of thing is why I sometimes wonder if the leak was intentional, full of truths that wouldn't do too much harm, along with a bunch of half-truths to confuse the Russians and their allies, because this is just way too good to be true.

There's a certain logic to taking Russian territory; if Russia is stupid enough to see this as territorial dick measuring, then whip it out and show that yours is longer, plus it gives you more to bargain with at future talks.

The problem is that that's a pretty stupid way to look at the world, and the bigger problem is that Ukraine would arguably lose the moral advantage if it's no longer fighting a war of defense, and more practically would have a far harder time holding territory that isn't fully inhabited by Ukrainians. Holding hostile territory is far different from liberating friendly lands.

I have zero moral qualms with seizing enemy territory in a defensive war and I'm perplexed that the idea inspires such pushback everywhere.

A war of defense requires the strategic flexibility to shape the battlefield and exploit the invader's weak points wherever they might be. Threatening Belgorod and other strategically significant Russian territory (not even necessarily taking and holding them) could theoretically force a mass, chaotic shift of Russian troops out of Ukraine to shore up likely thinly-defended lines elsewhere, as well as hammer home the message of Putin's incredible overreach. Ukraine may have plenty of logistical and resourcing reasons not to broaden the front, but that's a whole different calculus.

Putin's invasion has given Ukraine every moral right to march on Moscow if it were to offer a quicker conclusion to the conflict. The aggressor doesn't get carte blanche to define the rules of the game. If the concern is that it puts Russian civilians at risk, well, there's already millions of Ukrainian civilians at risk—given Russia's started genocidal intent, all 43 million of them.

Putin started the war trying to sack Ukraine’s capital. There is no moral debate over attacks on Russian territory, only a practical one.

It may make them more likely to yell such nonsense, but I think the idea that public opinion would turn on Ukraine for making gains in Russian territory to improve their overall position is overblown.

If they suddenly started running roughshod through Russian territory, gobbling up land and inflicting the same deprivations they'd suffered, then, sure, a loss of support would be a certainty. But modest gains which would still force a major redistribution of Russian resources? Not so much.

This is funny, but it's hard to assume he was making that offer in good faith, especially since the Ukrainians themselves didn't trust him.

If we're reading about it in the Post then I'd imagine it's no surprise to the Russians and he isn't dead already.

Forcing the Russians to defend Belgorod is far more valuable than taking Belgorod. There are also enough Russian bases in and around Belgorod to make a small, armored thrust at HQs and depots a high yield endeavor. This all is going to tie down a lot of Russian forces just when they need high quality mobile units in reserve.

I think the landmine discussion is a good case. Just because you are in a defensive war with a war criming opponent does not mean every move you make to survive is morally justified and some level of discretion should be exercised.

To that end, in the last year the UK has trained 15,000 Ukrainian troops to battlefield readiness. In February the Prime Minister announced the UK would develop a new training programme for Ukrainian pilots to support their efforts to build a new Ukrainian air force with NATO-standard, F16 jets.

This summer we will commence an elementary flying phase for cohorts of Ukrainian pilots to learn basic training. This will adapt the programme used by UK pilots to provide Ukrainians with piloting skills they can apply a different kind of aircraft. This training goes hand in hand with UK efforts to work with other countries on providing F16 jets – Ukraine’s fighter jets of choice.

...

I feel like this is the first mention we've seen of anyone actively working to bring F16's to the Ukrainian air force, unless I missed some previous news on the subject.

There are countless examples but one favorite was the Ukrainian Air Force pilot who was at an airbase when they got word the invasion was starting & they expected to be hit immediately as it wasn’t a hidden base & had high value targets. But Russia just didn’t attack and so they had sufficient time to move planes & pilots & continue being effective far beyond the timeline of the most optimistic projection.
