I kind of bounced off BOTW because, for all the neat mechanics, I didn't find the actual world that interesting to explore and it felt like outside of a couple notable locations, any potentially interesting thing just ended up being another shrine or Korok seed. How is TOTK in that regard? Is there more unique interesting stuff in the world to find?

Really depends if you're looking for more stuff or something different. For example there are caves around and each one has something special to find which might be well hidden in there; is that different from yet another shrine or korok?

There's a few more things to find around the place, but the gameplay and gameflow isn't fundamentally different. If your turnoff was at the basic gameplay level, don't go looking for a change here.

I found a potential bug/exploit (seems pretty niche so I doubt it's that useful but it was interesting) during combat with a hinox I was in the middle of doing a spin attack with a two hander but I was also pressing A trying to steal the items from its neck, it put me in like the weapon select screen where you get an item but don't have room, the hit sound started spamming and when I exited that menu my sword broke and it got one shotted

Of all the unexpected plot elements, I think the most surprising has been the Zora kingdom being besieged by showers of poo from the sky :stare:

Now that's how you generate a dramatic story!

So I uh, just randomly stumbled onto the loving Hylian Shield. Funny thing is, if you are good at dodging/running I'm pretty sure you can get it like 10 minutes after getting the Paraglider back from Purah.

I felt the same about BotW, didn't click with me at all, but unless anything drastically changes TotK is among the best video games ever created.

I've seen a lot of people who have bounced off BotW because it felt "empty" to them do a full 180 and fully embrace TotK. The world just feels a lot more lively and active. There are more NPCs around, more quests, and a new central hub town that evolves over the course of the game. The game world is also a lot bigger with more diversity of content due to the presence of the sky islands, all the new caves, and that which lies underground. Many areas in the overworld that felt empty in BotW have new things happening in them. Though yes, at its core, this is still very much like BotW, just with more of everything.

edit: That said, they haven't given in to the theme-park style of open world game design. There are still lots of moments where you have to find your own way to a destination, which involves getting on your horse and galloping through the countryside, taking in the sights, occasionally dismounting to do a side activity or whatever. It's not like every moment is scripted/designed. So if that's something you dislike, then this game may continue not being for you.

It’s kinda like BotW in terms of mechanics and gameplay but the rest couldn’t be more different. I had to force myself to play it because so many people say it’s good, I’m currently playing TOTK like a loving absolute crackhead

I wonder how much the "eh" on botw but hype on totk comes down to botw having most of its secrets revealed, while totk is still extremely fresh. Like, there's slowly maps coming out, but even post-leak you can't just do everything

Ultimately I think what it came down to for me with BOTW is that the sense of completely open exploration was diminished by every exploration ending the same way with the same results. At the point where I ended up putting down the game (just before the third beast) I kind of felt like I'd seen all the game had to offer. For comparison, some of the stuff that did stand out positively were poking around Hyrule Castle, which had the open exploration but also felt like it had a certain structure to it, and had both environmental storytelling and physical rewards, and stumbling across those dragons in the wild. Those were moments where I felt like I was getting something genuinely new and unexpected, rather than "What's over this mountain? Oh, it's another mountain and a shrine."

I've got a bit over 100 and I'm still finding whole rear end obvious surface ones lol. Yesterday I was cruising around on foot for a moment after emerging from some cave through ascend to get my bearings and I found a whole horse house I hadn't found yet. Did a quest for the stable on my horse and thought I was heading back to the stable to turn in the quest... No! I brought us to another new undiscovered stable.

I still have surface to cover, but for the sneaky ones it'll be easier to find them in this game. I've already found a few that way just curious what it's like up there.

I really have only found one way to beat them that wasn't just bomb arrows to the wad or butt chugging hearts. I had some spear fused with another spear that gave me enough reach to poke the bastards without getting stuck in some horrible grabbing chain. Even that seemed to work mostly because they seemed slightly occupied by the spirit squad.

story spoiler when you complete the goron area story, you get a goron friend that small large areas of stone on demand. Too bad he does it on a cooldown, so you either wait, or use some weapons durability

Still, a few fun ones: cannon, light, puffer shroom

Is there something I can fuse for like added durability?

One of the gorons has a diamond store in the middle of town and says something about fusing diamonds to your shield being a good idea

I don't know if it works like weapons where some stuff is "better" than other stuff in terms of adding durabilty, or if it's like weapons where no matter what you fuse it just can take another N hits as long as the fused thing doesn't break
