My best friend had that case and knocked a jar of red model paint directly onto the top exhaust fan. The computer still worked and his walls/ceiling looked like a hamster had exploded.

i think they went from standard (32-bit) PCI (G3 and early G4) to AGP (rest of G4 and most G5) to PCI-E (late G5). unless xserve did something weird, i don't think there was a pci-x video card.

you can use standard pci cards in a pci-x slot, though, if the voltage keying is right

One night during "the big divide" after Dynamo (a night club) closed, we heard a scream of "NOT loving THERE!" coming from the library's backyard across the street (where everyone went to piss because the nightclub was closed). The library is a "free copy library" i.e. they archive every bit of printed matter published in the country, and thus it extends several stories underground. This obviously requires somewhat powerful ventilation...

so some bright young lad had had the bright idea to piss straight into one of the big exhaust fans on the wall.

I just had a magic smoke event with an EGA monitor I picked up cheap. Since the picture was strong otherwise and the price was good I'm tempted to not try a return and look into recapping it since it seems like a blown cap is the issue and that's fixable.

For the haul of speccy stuff, could you comment more on the 'programmable joystick interface'? Never seen anything like that before. Before I zoomed the image in, I thought it was a broken Interface 2 :v:

There were a few like that before Kempston/Interface 2 joysticks became the de-facto standards. That's a particularly crude one though, most had at least a proper case and five 2-pin cables you plugged into sockets labelled for each key, this one looks like you need to look up the keyboard matrix in a chart.

That's loving cool! I guess by the time I got a Spectrum (1986, I think), stuff like that was already long obsolete.

Edit: And by 'Spectrum' I mean a 'Saga 1 Emperor' - https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/1000352/Hardware/Saga_1_Emperor_Keyboard. I was spared the rubber keys. Even got a 2-button mouse with it. God drat, that was a good Christmas

I only realised they were a thing like a month ago, would of loved to have had one growing up to play those spectrum games that didn't support joysticks. Still got my 128k +2 model and a Spectrum Next coming along this summer, so maybe I still have a need to get one.

Gone Skiin'

there was a department store in my town when I was a teenager which had two of those TV/VHS combos next to each other - like literally touching side to side - both blaring different JML infomercials far too loud. Just passing by it was like an intense aural assault. It was right opposite a checkout too. I'd have taken a hammer to them 30 minutes into my first shift.
