swg pre-CU lasted just short of two years, CU only a few months, and then NGE for the rest of the game's lifespan as a dead husk of its former self.

in truth while the community freaked out about the combat upgrade, private servers have taught us that pre-CU's economic mechanics start to break down a few years after a server starts up and its combat mechanics were always a tired chore that you put up with for the novelty of being in an Online Star War. CU private servers are interesting since the game really never had time to exist properly in that state before it was revamped with NGE into a WoW clone, i think they are probably the best choice if you want to play SWG today

How do pre-CU economies break down after a couple years?

Someone's making a games workshop game. I guess that's not really news though huh

quote:

“As someone who has molded my career developing expansive MMO stories, I’m proud to unveil that our first game in development at Jackalyptic Games will focus on the rich universes of Warhammer,” said Jack Emmert, CEO at Jackalyptic Games. “Bringing the deep lore of this IP to our game is a massive undertaking, and we are thrilled to work alongside Games Workshop to bring this vision to life.”

Throughout the game’s development cycle, Jackalyptic Games will work closely with Games Workshop to engage their respective communities to gain insights and feedback on the game.

Jack Emmert brings decades of MMORPG-related experience to Jackalyptic Games and its new project, having previously led development on multiple high-profile game franchises including City of Heroes, Neverwinter, Star Trek Online, and DC Universe Online. Jackalyptic Games is NetEase Games’ debut game studio in the United States. It will operate independently and maintain creative autonomy in its game development.

The dreadnoughts and terminators have been replaced with new models that are basically the same guy but bigger

The greater demons being killed off are from the forge world brand. I reckon they might be doing plastic versions, because their recent trend is to make bigger versions of the same models (with a different name and better rules, no you can't use your old models stop asking), and the forge world ones are very large. Or they just weren't popular, who knows

They lose the iconic boxyness on dreadnoughts, I kind of hate the new variant. It's not just it being bigger. The new terminators are fine though, they keep the helmet.

I imagine because eventually all the crafters eventually get perfect mats which is what you needed to run the uh, whatever the statline quality for the doc buffs were (i seem to recall the number 800?). And those medic buffs completely break the game. Everything becomes trivial except for content that is impossible (death watch bunker, the loving corellian corvette). People do "solo groups" where you get in groups to be able to solo because I think being in the group gave you more or different or better missions at the terminal. Then you spam the clunky rear end combat system or even macro it and kill bols for a hundred hours. The market goes bonkers.

With that Rage of the Wookies expansion (ugh, terrible name), they did two things. One was the combat upgrade, which was fine. The other is that they added honest to god star wars content in the game. But it wasn't enough, and they needed to make more content. That's what people were telling them, but they weren't getting it done and people were still trying to get their jedi, which at that point was the jedi village so that it was some sort of fair way to get jedi unlocked. But it required even more grinding of bols. Millions of XP to unlock each box. People got bored, they quit. The staff panicked, they decided to do the terrible NGE. They announced it right after the Trials of Obi-Wan expansion (ugh, terrible name) and then launched it i think 2 weeks later? It was so half assed that it had pictures of the characters for each class (luke, han, commander cody, etc) and some of them had incorrect aspect ratios. Kaboom. Game over.

SWG was a weird game. It was a cool social experiment but a terrible spacewars game. Then it was a slightly better spacewars game (I liked the CU fight me) and even had a space game that was good but horrendously broken at the end game, because it forced PVP and they had their head so far up their rear end that they couldn't figure out how having a completely different scale for hp and damage for npcs vs players (npcs had tens or hundreds of thousands of hit points, you had like 5 thousand) would completely break down if you didn't change those values for pvp, so one volley of lasers would destroy a multi player ship. They never fixed it because i don't know, they were dumb. And the player base who got ace rank first (which was just the top of the skill chain) made it their active duty to prevent other players from being able to finish their last mission because griefing "lore". This is the same game where you couldn't wear a rebel outfit because to do so you had to flag pvp and then some person in stormtrooper armor would spinkick you to death.

AoS has spent like 8 years reintroducing factions and unfucking their lore. It's really strange, because it launched as "the entire universe was blown up and there are only hell plains were these guys fight each other" and now it's like, eh nevermind. It's fine. Here's a map of the world.

The microtransactions for cosmetics is a kick in the back for that but I'd say it's more due to their terrible launch that was missing the crafting feature carrot for the long term players more than microtransactions. But if a true micro-heavy mmo comes out you bet your rear end it's going to have tons of gameplay-impacting items to buy.

Every game system stunk to high heaven of “in a few months we will put a microtransaction here to ease the burden and boredom of it”. But instead everyone stopped playing and they panicked.

True! Not an MMO, or live service title, which is why it will be good. Anything MMO or live service I just automatically dump into the forget about it category nowadays. Overwhelming positive word of mouth is about the only way I will play one of those games these days.

MMO Chat: We had a great design but lacked the expert developers you need for an MMORPG.

Hadn't heard about this one before now. It's a little telling that all they seemed to have was concept art. Too many idea guys, not enough developers.

it's the bridge game between Space Marine and Space Marine 2 apparently too, which is cool.

It involves that weird battery you get in Space Marine and the servo skull that's accompanying you belongs to the inquisitor at the end of the first game. You're not playing as titus tho.

For reasons entirely unknown to me, I have been afforded the generous opportunity to invest in an up and coming MMO.

quote:

Dear [kedo],

You have been recommended to us by a partner of ours thinking that you will definitely want to hear about what we are up to at 4Ares and Game of Dragons.

The gaming industry is due to become a $499b industry by 2027 and we are at the forefront of our specialist niche within the web3/new wave of immersive gaming.

A few facts about us:
• We have been fully self-funded till now.
• Multichain, MVP released as Season 1 while Season 2 will be released in April, cross-chain NFT marketplace and more.
• Aggressively expanding our team and looking to have our gaming studio incorporated in the heart of Islamabad, utilizing the wealth of talent available at our disposal.
• The gaming studio will start as a single business unit with around 30-35 talented people, working full time on Game of Dragons. Following this business unit, we will open more business units which will do outsourced business.

We are raising a $3-5m Series A, and would love to get you onboard. Would you be open to a 30-min call next week?

I've attached our latest deck for you to digest at the earliest convenience.

We would love to discuss possibilities and look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Ciprian Carausu
CEO, 4Ares & Game of Dragons

I know, I know, you're skeptical, but what if I hit you with these astonishing points??

quote:

- Players can collect dragons, items, and abilities and may choose to trade them on the internal NFT marketplace.
- They can also collect, breed, and trade Dragons to obtain unique NFTs for the Public Multichain NFT marketplace.
- Our multichain token provides a seamless bridge between cryptocurrencies and NFTs across different blockchains.

The CU era of SWG was the best, and I will never understand everyone's obsession with Pre-CU. It made it so Composite armor wasn't the default, shook combat up and made it a lot more fun. Essentially, it had a lot of the QoL things that were the only positives of the NGE, but the deeper skill system that so many people enjoyed. I haven't checked in years, is there a popular CU era private server?
