You're right in that pumps usually produce variable amounts of head depending on the resistance downstream. For an oversimplified pump with no safety mechanisms, if you plot pressure vs flow you'll see curves generally reflecting Bernoulli's Principle (flow is inversely proportional to drag/gravitational/static/etc losses, plus some other crap) with two extreme cases of "runout" where there's little-or-no resistance, the pump runs very fast and produces a high flow rate at low pressure and can overheat and burnout the pump motor. At the other end there's "high head" where the resistance is too great and the pipes are effectively totally blocked so the pump produces a lot of pressure and zero flow, for some pumps they'll just spin ineffectually and others fail explosively.

Both of those failure modes are easy to prevent but still happen in poorly-designed machines and produce funny videos.

This is just plain not true.

They are the most common reported rabid animal in the US, yes, but actual rabies occurrence in bats is rare. They are likely over-reported due to people spreading this misconception.

You really don't have to worry about a colony of bats spreading rabies. The problem is their behavior when they are sick. Bats in a colony will leave and go off on their own if they are sick, which is when they are most likely to encounter humans. Rabid bats do not stay and hang around in a colony.

So yes, if you get a single bat in your house, it could be sick, and you should definitely get a rabies shot if it bites you (if you can catch the bat and get it tested, even better). But really, you should do the same with any wild mammal that gets into your home.

The actual issue with a bat colony in a structure like that is going to be the massive amount of guano. That whole structure was likely uninhabitable due to smell alone.
