It's actually really hosed up to see how directly this happens. There are some channels I watch frequently, but am not subscribed to that I actively have to search out every week, because they release videos every week, that you'd think youtube would recommend to me because I like them, watch them and frequently even re-watch them. But no, literally none of their videos ever show up in my recommended lists.

But then I made the mistake of watching one video about a new terraria update and half my recommended list is nothing but garbage terraria videos, so who's to say what the conspiracy actually is.

CellSpex's stuff is pretty good. She's mostly settled at reviews of animated feature films, but will occasionally cover series (and live action, from time to time). Unlike Saberspark she actually has worthwhile stuff to say about the movies she reviews / commentates besides "now I don't know much about (whatever the movie is about), but this was SO COOL/LAME/WEIRD!!!". I particularly like her yearly roundups because she usually includesa few indie, international or arthouse films that flew entirely under the radar otherwise.

I liked Breadsword's videos too but the channel seems to have gone on indefinite hiatus.

For anime-specific coverage there's a broader selection of quality youtubers, but hazel and Beyond Ghibli are a good place to start imo

Jenny's also replying to in the thread to folks asking for clarity, kinda sounds like from the get go the whole thing was a little too overambitious and predicated on the idea that people would drop five grand to spend most of their time playing a phone game.

It's the sort of mess everyone could see from miles away as soon as it was advertised, again when the prices were released, again when people saw the ridiculous schedule you had to commit to for the 2-day experience, etc. I have to wonder exactly how bad it was losing money if it barely lasted a year. They poured so much into creating it, the app, designing all the bespoke set pieces and costumes, hiring all the hotel staff, etc.

Hey thread, I thought I'd share with you guys one of my favorite channels that talks about one of my favorite topics: :sparkles:Broadway Musicals:sparkles:
Wait In The Wings does cool video essays on Broadway shows and I wanted to share some of his best vids. Even if you're not in to musicals I hope you'll check him out the next time you're looking for something new to watch. Please enjoy my effort post!

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark-Broadway's most expensive and dangerous spectacle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6bxB9vTToQ
Spider hyphen man musical written by U2 and Julie Taymor, the lady who is responsible for Lion King the Musical. Most expensive broadway show to date. A bunch of people got hurt!!

Speaking of needlessly dangerous shows; Andrew Lloyd Webber's Crazy Train Musical, Starlight Express https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTXtLNsrvlI
If you thought Cats was the weirdest thing ALW ever made, well friends, strap in. Starlight Express is basically Cats but replace the cats with trains. More people got hurt! It's still running in Germany!

The Broadway Show That Closed In Three Days: The History of Carrie The Musical https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTaAzFl_GYk
Still considered the shortest running show ever. It was bad.
(but then had a pretty well-received Off-Broadway revival back in the 2010's :unsmith:)

The Hectic History of Beetlejuice the Musical https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Dmcq-HuBJg
Beetlejuice the Musical is Great! No irony! Check out the cast album if you get the chance, it's a lot of fun

Broadway's Biggest Mystery https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roIueOG7_N4
A bunch of investors try to commit a bunch of fraud. Like the Producers but not funny and not directed by Mel Brooks

Speaking of Mel Brooks
How Mel Brooks broke Broadway...Twice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3KOqrHYh2U
Shorter video on Mel Brooks musical adaptations

How Andrew Lloyd Webber lost a fortune in 15 minutes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEmMV84BgF8
Another short video detailing how ALW was sued (rightfully!) by Patti LuPone.

The Rise and Fall of the Phantom Chandelier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQM2F7RhX6I
A brief history of the Phantom of the Opera chandelier

10 Broadway Set pieces that went WAY TO HARD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnayRjTWDbo
If you thought the Phantom chandelier was a lot, just....just wait.

And finally; Hadestown: A History of Defiance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcPliuSlyb8
I'm super biased, this is my favorite show running right now. Lindsey Ellis is also a huge fan and has name dropped it a couple times, most notably in her Titanic video. Hilariously, the actors who played Spider-Man and Green Goblin in the above Spider-Man musical are in this as well. It's currently on another nation tour so if any of this piques your interest I highly recommend it, or check out the cast album! It's Greek Myth set to Depression-era jazz soundtrack :shobon:

yeah these loving rule and I love whenever they get someone on who isn't just immediately dismissive of the subject matter. this is one of the best of these sorts of videos I've seen, he really goes into the nitty gritty of the ridiculousness of warhammer aesthetics and how a lot of it really isn't so far-fetched, the remarks about painting armor and how once we wouldn't need to worry about human strength holding up a suit of power armor when hydraulic-powered suits likely start showing up in the next few decades, that the human tendency to decorate things will probably make a huge resurgence, was really fascinating.

I feel awful for Bad Cinderella's cast and crew because they were absolutely done dirty by all of this...but I'm kind of at a loss as to why this show is one of ALW's shows that has gotten the most praise from professional critics. It's just not very good and it just seems tailor made to be something that Webber thought would appeal to the younger crowd, which just goes to show that Webber is definitely no longer creating trends but actively chasing them. I don't know, maybe if &Juliet hadn't also been running this season, which seems to be doing what Bad Cinderella was trying to do but better and actually having an active conversation with its source material.

Musicalspaining's newest ep goes in to it a lot better than I could have. Nothing about this show actually needed to be about Cinderella and could have been better if it had been any other fairy tale. But even then, Into the Woods came out in the 80's  Everything about this show just made me go, "but why??"
https://twitter.com/musicalsplainin/status/1661009083737202689?s=20

Also, Webber is a huge loving Tory so that probably explains most of it

edit: The above video is really, really good and goes pretty in-depth in to Bad Cinderella but if you want a good TL;DR on why people are so pissed at Webber for this show please watch the section titled "The Time Everyone Lost Their Jobs" starting at 1:07:14. It's a loving doozy

But even then... not to poo poo all over David Zippel, but I feel like Webber has worked with better lyricists?

And I'm sorry, nothing can convince me that Webber wouldn't have the biggest shitfit if someone sampled one of his most famous melodies the way he sampled from R&H's Cinderella

Webber flew at short notice from New York to London to cast a vote in the house of lords to cut tax credits, a move that would have meant that low earners and many disabled people wold have been ducked. The man is a huge rear end in a top hat.

Yeah, Lord Andy sucks. It is, however, interesting to see his growing irrelevance to the theater scene as a whole. He had his hits but the dude's 70 now he does not, in fact, know what is hip with the kids these days. There's so much in Bad Cinderella that just feels like he's chasing TikTok trends because that's what other shows are doing, not because he understands why those things work. Which sucks. I liked his take on School Of Rock.

The founder of spitfire audio posted supporting jkr, stamped his feet, and after a bunch of backlash said he was stepping away from the company. Notably, still profiting from them, and not apologizing.

Today Alex put out a video that is basically an advert for spitfire.
He took their money well after the controversy. I'm disappointed as hell.
