It wasn't a surprise victory, it was just losing less hard than expected and it definitely didn't pan out as a victory since we got brexit under Boris instead who smashed corbyn at next the election, May was probably the best of the last 3 wait 4 PMs as insane at that sounds to me. It says "the labour Party's unexpected victory in the UK" and it's the only success listed in the blurb which is subtitled "the complete story of the victories and failures of millennial socialism" That ends "But all of the late nights, heated debates, and joyous camaraderie was set against the unmistakable sense that somehow, socialism was winning." I dunno just weird to see it put that way it's sort of American left myth making

Lmao what I remember most about the 2019 nightmare election was the Novara stream saying that some guys from chapo were there and might come on. Iirc They'd been doorknocking during 2017 and that had been a festive atmosphere and they did the same in 2019 and basically were a gaggle of Newyork podcasters being told at every door that corbyn was a traitor or too brexit or too remain. Liberalism still assumes that "individual liberties" rule and capital cannot be questioned. But there's still some systemic understanding of material conditions, public housing would get built (racistly), food subsidies provided, Civil Rights Act passed etc. Class analysis still kind of exists for liberals. Neoliberalism abandons all pretense of social good, extends individualism to its logical conclusion, that every person is at fault for every social ill and uses that framework to extract as much value as possible from them in a purely punitive way. Means testing access to private healthcare instead of like. Using the government to build hospitals. Acknowledging that class exists and that the relationship between capital and worker is dominant would give away the game for a neoliberal, it just can't be broached. There's probably more to it in my mind but thats what I meant when I wrote that.
