i always liked to read stories about how some of the world's greatest players basically got their start by just having a guitar and practicing in their room for like a year

now it has been several years - probably more than a decade - since i have read these stories. i have a guitar too that i play once a year

ho hum

i think the moral of this story is that sometimes even if you have all the pieces of the puzzle, you need some sort of mystical alignment of the stars in order to tumble into the correct rabbit hole that keeps you motivated and going and it's probably not worth worrying about stuff like that too much

thinking about how much I loved daft punk honework when it came out and the song rock and roll I made a cassette tape with nothing but that song on repeat on both sides

and listening to it now as inspiration and makes me realise how simple my music can be to give me satisfaction

would love to have an overdrive to make a filter scream like in that song

I picked this up as I'm a sucker for this kind of thing. No documentation and only comes with a short tutorial, no examples. Need to play with it more but found it hard to express what I want it to do, anything that involves increasing the number of travellers soon breaks down.

Maschine would be so much nicer if it wasn't constantly throwing shitfits over where plugins that haven't moved are. Ironically enough it's only other NI plugins it wont find :catstare:

On the plus side, installing Microfreak 5.0 on my hardware, looking forward to samples and grains on it after messing around with EFX Fragments

some people have bought a local abandoned church and turned it into a 'work from home hub' but want to do music gigs, I've sort of become mates with the owner and he said I should do a modular gig because he's really into them but said anything I do has to be 'abstract' and im not allowed to use sequencers or have a beat or a tune, so I took that as a challenge. first effort:
https://soundcloud.com/djfireextinguisher/quad-eco-d

turn your headphones down if you give it a listen! its a bit chaotic but there's some nice sounds in there.

in my experience churches have terrible acoustics for anything that should not have massive massive amounts of reverb, but this is from stone churches, maybe material makes a difference

It’s not very clear and I don’t think he’s given it much thought but I’m assuming they’re not allowed. The patch above is four oscillators FM-img each other in a ring with the pulse outputs each triggering a drum. Is that a sequencer? I dunno.

Cybernetic Vermin posted:

It’s basically a cafe with decent internet and v cheap good coffee. it’s also full of massive sofas and rad as heck old audio equipment (and a working church organ). The acoustics are actually pretty good.

Been a while, huh. I felt like "rescuing" this track from DefleMask, so I redid it in a real tracker program with good old SoundCanvas VA. I'm pretty happy with the result. I hope the drums sound alright, I'm still learning how to deal with those.

these tracker songs are wild, i can absolutely not wrap my head around how to make something like that with something like that

been stuck in kind of a creative rut and trying to make some new stuff, finally have a a few collections of decent loops and a kind of rough draft of something

some kind of synth-wavey sort of thing idk

its easy, you move the cursor to where you want the note and you press the key for the note. repeat until you have enough notes. I don’t understand how people work with other DAWs

can confirm trackers loving rule

the one drawback is that the tonal/harmonic relationships at any point in the song aren’t as obviously visible, which is a very big advantage of staves and piano rolls

I wonder if there's a way to make note colours different on Renoise? C is blue, D is purple etc, sorta like the pads on a Maschine?
Might make navigating a part a little quicker when you can see where, say, the bass changes from G to E but there's already so many colours and info to parse already it might just add to the visual (re)noise.
Be interesting to try though
