Yeah so much of this depends on genre. Same with qualifying things as “retro”.

Gaming was quantifiably better for arcade racing games during the PS3 and 360 era, and the modern industry treats that period as if it happened in 1712.

Neat. Anyways, having played some more, I'm torn between recommending the Dragon Sect for a first playthrough. Because while it's a great way to get to know the game, fully taking advantage of its questline turns out to be kind of a trap in the long run, since its core feature is pretty much useless, and I eventually got stonewalled against a world boss some time in Tier 5 and died out of frustration. I probably could have level grinded on skills though, so most of the blame still belongs to me. Planning on starting again using what I've learned for a more freeform, but still "simple-ish" playthrough, maybe adding in working on the Alchemy subsystem this time. I figure that if the game really has its hooks into me, I'll get into all the complicated stuff eventually on higher difficulty settings.

A bit late but another excellent xianxia game with that effect is Immortal Way Of Life:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1189490/_/

It doesn't have an official translation, but the fan translation is by the same people who did the Taiwu and Tale of Immortal ones. It's an open-world turn-based RPG/life simulation hybrid, with lots of systems for alchemy, breakthroughs, artifact crafting, exploration, socialising, tournaments etc.

I think probably the best aspect is the fact that the world continues on in the background regardless of what you do, and does so at a scale of years, decades, centuries and millenniums - as you reach higher cultivation (which is not necessarily trivial, it's very possible to die of running out of lifespan instead) you get more years but also need even more years and better cultivation resources to continue.

The main difference from ToI is that it's less linear and that the combat is turn-based instead, somewhat similar to The Scroll of Taiwu.

They are both S-tier xianxia/wuxia games, alongside The Scroll of Taiwu, ACS and Sands of Salzaar.

e: Here is what mid/late-game combat looks like (in English), although 99% of victory is about choosing how and what you cultivate:

And here is some end-game combat:

The earlier ones are still the best, imo, so Dusk, Amid Evil, I like Ion Fury a lot. I know people are into Hedon but it sounds like a real commitment, there Cultic, but I'm waiting for the second episode's release. If Wrath ever fully comes out it'll probably be up there, then there's also Turbo Overkill which lives up to its name, supposed to be leaving EA soon. It's not exactly a new game, but the Arcane Dimensions mod for Quake 1 has enough modern design sensibilities that it frankly blows the original campaign out the water.

I know I was a bit down on it earlier in the thread, but I actually went back and tried Dread Templar and I'm enjoying it quite a bit for some old-school shooting fun and secret hunting with some modern aesthetics like cool-down abilities, slow-mo, dashes, upgrades/builds, etc. It's a little janky and took me a bit to warm up to it, but I'd add it to the list of recs. As Mordja mentioned earlier, I'd also add Prodeus to the list of recs as well, though I agree with their points where, while it feels good overall, it is a bit generic, and some of the arena combat and enemy design and weapon mechanics are annoying/unsatisfying at times.

Some ones I've heard recommended but I don't: STRAFE and Forgive Me Father and Project Warlock have potential and I can see why some people would recommend but I found them quite unsatisfying and boring.

Ones I hear recommended but I haven't personally tried yet so can't vouch for: HROT and Nightmare Reaper and Viscerafest and ULTRAKILL and Serious Sam 4 and of course, the recent Warhammer 40k Boltgun

I feel like a lot of developers and/or publishers are obsessed with more versus just focusing on a good set of core fun mechanics. Metrics are all about that Time to Beat or how "big" your open world is, or how well modeled your car crash/viscera systems are.

They don't have to be small downloads, or written in assembler or use only KB/M. Develop a focused, fun game.

There are still developers doing this, but the recent trend seems to be release early, release broken and beg for forgiveness once that check has cleared.

On one hand I think it would be a great fit for a Total War game but on the other hand I don't think it would be meaningfully different from Total Warhammer. Maybe someone will make a cool Total Warhammer LOTR mod though

Playing certain factions in Total Warhammer (like wood elves for example) feels very LotR sometimes already

I think there's some conversion mods for games like Crusader Kings but not active fighters like Total War. Imo part of the issue is that if you want to do a lore-heavy strategy game you have to contend with the fact that during the events of the Lord of the Rings the forces of good were explicitly losing and would have been done for if not for the sneaksy hobbitses. You'd have to do a lot earlier in the lore where there was more inter-racial fighting before The Ring became a major force and that's getting dangerously into the Simarillion-level of lore territory, which won't have a lot of wide appeal.

We do really need Battle For Middle Earth 3 though, the original was great. I'm not sure of any legal way to play BFME1-2 now so probably not going to happen.

Do we have an emulation thread here, btw? I wouldn’t mind playing some games of all varieties from Nintendo to Atari on my PC, but I don’t even know where to start. I haven’t played a Zelda game since the side-scrolling one in ‘88/‘89, or played anything on a console of my own since I got a PC in 1991.

My son started out with a Wii (NBA 2k10) and all the Xbox consoles since then, so I’ve “seen” modern console stuff (and bought many games as he grew to adulthood), but I’ve not actually played any console-exclusive titles on any ecosystem since 1989 and I feel like I’ve missed some bangers. Just missed lots of games outta my wheelhouse as I’ve been exclusive to PC gaming (or released to PC alongside/later on like Elden Ring).

Not asking for :filez: or even recommendations (yet!), but stuff like Shadow of the Colossus and BotW have completely passed me by on my PC. Not enough to buy a 7DS AmnioBoy 4, however I am aware emulation exists. I even have Retro Arch on Steam (never clicked), but have absolutely zero clue where to start with getting old-to-current games to play strictly on my gaming rig. I figure I can read an OP or something just to dip a toe in and check what’s out there and if it’s worth reading further! I Knowing Goons there has to be at least a “how to get started” post somewhere, and since I’m stuck on a phone until late AM hopefully I can read/learn to pass time while cut off from site searching on AwfulApp. Thanks for any help!

I said come in!

Apparently 'bullet heaven' is a genre - wherein you are the one shooting everything else, rather than dodging infinite hails of gunfire.
This one is like the intersection of Diablo and Vampire Survivors.
In any case, this game is excellent. Absolutely nails the retro aesthetic and looks wonderful in motion.
The progression and unlocks are done in a neat way, and there's enough in there to keep you digging for new playthings.
Every playable character is quite distinct, too, and the full range of abilities gets pretty ridiculous.

Yeah, I knew that was why RetroArch was there, and I can Google how to use it/find games no problem on my own. To be clear: I’m not talking about playing old PC games because I know about DOSBox/compatibility modes/etc for games on PC (even have USB 1.44” floppy & DVD/RW drives to play a mountain of games I own physically).

I would love to try out some Nintendo on my PC, though, mainly from watching BotW video on YouTube and TotK streams and while I don’t mind paying $70 for a legal copy of Tears to emulate, I just can’t see myself buying a Switch. I would just be playing in my room in my chair anyway; might as well do it on my 32” monitor if it’s possible

To quote my own steam review of this game's pre-EA demo:

"The inclusion of gameplay is a welcome departure from genre conventions"

It's the only one of these games I've played that feels like the player actually interacts with it beyond picking upgrades and sometimes running in circles, though that kind of fell apart once I got most of the metaprogression upgrades at which point, much like the rest of the genre, your power scaling strips the mechanical interaction away (at least in the demo)

also here's the demo if anyone wants to try it out before buying, there's a solid amount of content here:
