Early to mid 00s. The widespread popularization of console gaming with the Nintendo 64, PlayStation/PlayStation 2 and Xbox meant people could play the same video games at home that they could at the arcade anytime they wanted and for functionally free once they bought the game, and mass produced consoles were cheaper to make and buy than giant rear end arcade video game cabinets.

I watched a local arcade go from being THE popular downtown hang out spot packed with hundreds of people every day to a loving used furniture store in the span of like 2 years. It was not fun.

Some small spaces bring back the nostalgia of arcades, but also appeal to adults; they have a cover charge, you can buy alcohol, and all the machines are set to free play.

Only issue is that the hardware is usually original cabinet which might have issues, particularly with a bad screen or loose stick, or something else equally frustrating. But that depends on who's running it and how well it's doing.

There's business in nostalgia, then as now. Someone is voluntarily stuck in a niche age of yesteryear and carries that torch of their own volition, and are willing to invite you to visit.

This.
It also helps to 'like' the videos you do actually like. After a week or so, the almighty algorhythm will have figured out exactly what kind of person you are, and the videos you are most likely to click on.
It is a self amplifying system (like many things out there on the modern internet). This, however, also works for conspiracy nutcases who will exclusively see videos that support their conspiracy theories, because that's what they click on and like most. So you end up with a hole of misinformation that you'll only get out of, if you delete your viewing history and hit the 'I want to watch something new' button that sometimes shows up on the youtube home page, that shows you some videos that don't adhere to the profile youtube made of you.

All modern social sites make hidden profiles of you, and they all know a shitton more about you than you'd think. Give it a few weeks and they'll be able to pinpoint your location within a few blocks, your sexuality, gender, political views, race etc etc just by cross referencing the things you click on, versus known people from that demographic.

It's good because i like to watch videos about old shitboxes and electronics. It's bad because... Well, the platform owns the data and although youtube isn't using it for nefarious purposes, i have no clue what will happen when youtube eventually goes bankrupt and my data goes up for sale to the highest bidder.

Hey, Harvey,; just wanted to let you know that you're playing a dangerous game using your real name. You've done wonderful keeping certain information close to the chest, and you should absolutely keep it that way. There's a thing called "doxing" these days where people and robots try to get your personal information for a variety of reasons.

*personal info removed pending review* You shouldn't share that poo poo either. I already have the feds watching me, so I couldn't care less. State police and the FBI both are aware of my activities, and they're even tracking my ex-wife. poo poo sucks, but what are you gonna do?

Don't know if you recall how one of my nicknames was "Podfather," but that was when I was in the low security wing of the county jail (basically like daycare for adults) and I risked spending a week in solitary for first bitching out the guards over intercom for sarcastically making GBS threads on the only older black man in our group that *everyone* respected, then telling off the guy they sent to shut me down. They were in the wrong, they disrespected him, and I refused to back down on his behalf. The nickname was a half-condescending joke, but also half respectful. You know how it goes, yeah?

*Edit* yes, my really real name is "Jim Bob". gently caress everyone who gives a poo poo. My addresses is also *personal info removed pending review* and my trailer door is never unlocked. I have nothing worth stealing except for maybe a cheap tv that I have actively been trying to get rid of. Living your real life free of worries is the greatest thing you can ever do.

Mod edit by CaptainSarcastic: Out of an excess of caution I'm blanking out personal information for now. It can be restored if deemed appropriate, but with this kind of thing I think it's better to err on the side of caution.

See?

Don't share personal info.

*Edit* Also, thanks for doing an exemplary job, mods. You really didn't need to, but you made a great example of my point. Thanks for looking out for someone, though!

I'm not being sarcastic. Y'all did what you thought was right to "protect" me from myself and others. That was sweet. Chef's kiss and all that. If I could, I would give you guys a hug, but you definitely could have left that info up, too.

haha i remember getting the high score on time pilot and held it for 2 weeks. i won something like 10 dollars worth of tokens for doing that. karate champ was another.

also there was a game i really liked a lot called i think black tiger. you could buy cool weapons to kill the monsters.

and gauntlet man i put so many tokens in that gauntlet game haha. warrior needs food badly. i will never forget that hahaha

when did arcades go away

are there any still around

The arcade scene suffered a lot in the 2000s, home consoles and computers and later phone games overtook them quite a bit because you could just do it on the internet and you dind't really need to go anywhere in particular. the pandemic definitely didn't help the remaining ones. I actually still have some in my area where they have a ton of Pinball, music games, shooters, and fighters like i mentioned. And a snack and drink counter of course. gotta fuel up with zoo zoos. Funnily enough we actually had Gauntlet for a while too but they switched that one out at some point and i miss it. I also always put in at least 1 round at the basketball hoops, i actually managed to get the high score the last time i went there.

holy cow the movie was awesome i loved it

so the first weird thing to me was buying the ticket from a touch screen thing. i don't remember if the early 90s had those printed tickets with the show time on it or if they were just the old generic brown or red tear off tickets

then cousin todd paid for my popcorn and milk duds and water and it was more than the movie what the hell. i had to go a different counter to get the popcorn bag filled.

the theater oh my god i don't know where to start. the seats were powered recliners i've never seen anything like that in my life. cousin todd said some theaters have a full kitchen and bar and they bring food to you. wow.

the screen seemed way way way bigger than what i can remember. and of course the sound holy crap the sound blew me away just in the previews

the popcorn wasn't as salty as i expected. i put my zoo zoos, milk duds, in the popcorn and let the chocolate melt a little. i like the soft and crunchy and salty sweet combo.

the movie itself was great. i'm sure i missed a lot of things because i was just amazed by the whole experience. cousin todd said i was grinning the entire time.

i loved the part where the characters from the 80s cartoon showed up hahahah that made me happy. and the part where the camera zoomed out and the maze thing looked like the old grid paper we used to play dnd that was very cool

the actors were great especially the main guy edgin and also doric, it seemed to me like they had a ton of fun making the movie and i hope there are more

Hello from Australia harvey zoo zoos,

https://goontu.be/ is a loosely affiliated offsite chat where people can add videos to watch. There is a separate thread here in GBS where people announce watch times for movies. Its a pretty chill and tolerant place and you should check it out, we'd be happy to have you. I have three questions:

Being that you were a big reader, were there any books that were "banned" or just never available in the penal system? You mentioned you guys loved Shawshank, but I'd imagine certain themes and topics were not made available? I can't imagine they'd want you guys reading Foucault or having access to certain mechanical manuals or even some occult stuff.

Being that there was a Women's prison colocated with your facility and there were guys blasting spunk into cups for for female prisoners, were there physical/sexual relationships between men and women within the same prison?

You mentioned prisoners weaponizing poop a lot. Ever get poop on you?

I'm gonna have to disagree, most major metros have "old school" style arcades. Pinball has made a huge resurgence in a ton of cities with leagues popping up all over.

hey this is a good question i'm glad you asked it

yes there are tons of books on the ban list. i don't know how they decide but my guess is it is different state to state or maybe even depending on the warden.

porn of any kind is banned but i remember when i first got there, a playboy issue of pamela anderson had been passed around for a long time haha it was in very bad shape. in fact it wasnt even the complete issue, it was just pages of her stapled together. small fights broke out over that thing hahahaha

sometimes we'd have photocopies of porn rags smuggled in

some of the banned books that i can remember were -

'the color purple', a lot of black culture literature actually no surprise there
'papillon' - i wanted to read that one because i loved the movie as a kid
a lot of the 'for dummies' books
'fight club'
random single issues of magazines like gq and maxim and men's life - i don't know what was in those issues not in the other issues
books about tattooing
'the lovely bones' - i just read this one actually
books about serial killers and the mafia
the quran wasn't banned but scholarly books on it were

most of the time we could only get books from the publisher or an approved seller. but if you were a good inmate they'd allow family to send some too.

haha no, i never got attacked with poop but i saw it happen. we called it glookie or glock dookie.

we were always dumb but now we're dumber AND it's all more visible thanks to social media. major factors have included consolidation of the news and entertainment media into like 5 companies and the construction of an all-encompassing right wing alternate media ecosystem that people can disappear into, spearheaded by fox news. basically, every ominous social trend that people riffed on in 1980s dystopias kept going and got much worse, and a good 30-40% of the population now totally agrees with the john birch society

the cryptocurrency thing has some other factors too, like people feeling like it's about time for a new economic frontier to open up and that not happening, and also seeing that they can't get ahead in the normal economy, with scam artists stepping in to sell them hope. it's also super-convenient for intelligence services and law enforcement because everything in cryptocurrency is publicly logged forever (but you also need manpower to comb over the records and connect people to their activities)

in general it's people trying to squeeze the last blood from the stone that is the internet

okay a couple of people have asked what a normal day was like. this changed for me over the years depending on my job assignments but in general it was something like

5 am - wake up for count. when i did food prep i'd wake up at 330 and get started at 4am so the day was a lot different when working in the kitchen. prisoner counts happened several times a day

530 - 30 to 45 minutes for breakfast. breakfast wasn't great most of the time so i'd get something from the commissary like a danish and coffee and a piece of fruit

615 to 730 - morning devotional if that was your thing, otherwise shower or get and read mail

730 or 8 until 2pm - work. some jobs i had were laundry, building maintenance, yard maintenance. i got paid anywhere from 0.15 cents to 0.50 cents per hour.

2 to 3pm - shower, break time, get ready for classes if i was taking any, like my ged

3 to 5 pm - time in class or on the yard for exercise , make phone calls

5 to 6 pm - dinner

6 to 8 pm - self help and therapy groups like anger management, religious services and stuff like that

8 - 9pm - remain in housing area, tv room, play games, just chill for a while

9pm - everyone locked in cells

9 - 11pm - read, watch tv in cell, write letters, have a snack

11:15 - lights out, shut the gently caress up and try to sleep. lights out policies came and went. sometimes we could have lamps on so we'd stay up later. but 12:30am was the hard line for lights out no matter what.
