yeah whatever release I have of the first wu-tang album is crammed onto one LP and the lead out tracks on each side are horribly staticy. that being said I think some bands really go overboard with the two LP thing and it’s definitely not always needed

theres a bunch of albums spread across multiple discs where some sides are 33rpm and some are 45 cause of weird runtime. i remember listening to some ambient thing on the wrong speed without noticing, some blixa bargeld solo or sth? it also had great runout groove loops so it took a while to notice you had to switch

My dad had vinyls growing up and I never really cared for them, but after he passed away and we started going through his actual collection for either hard-to-find albums (Phantom of the Paradise!), older albums we actually liked (Thriller, Beatles), or just the downright weird poo poo (The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band), we ended up keeping maybe 1/20th of my parents records. I started getting into it, and have discovered the world of VG vinyl music. I'll admit, there is SOMETHING missing when listening to albums on CD or streaming, I don't know if it's the faint hiss and occasional pop on an older album, or having actual knobs to be able to fine tune the bass and treble, but there is an appeal to vinyl outside of just having nice, large sleeves to display. Plus modern albums feel durable enough that I don't feel like I might break them just taking them out of the sleeve, old albums were cheap AF in that regard.

I only listen to IMAX releases on the original 70mm print. Anything else just doesn't have the same warmth. Of course, my entire house had to be renovated to store the system and platters, which are 550 pounds apiece. But you can't put a price on fidelity.

I should have clarified that I meant in comparison to new albums, the old ones feel flimsy. There's a noticeable difference in thickness and weight between a mass-produced LP from the... gently caress, 60's-to-80's to modern ones made for a niche audience.

This exactly. Dub on 12" 45rpm sounds PHAT. You can literally see the squiggles in the groove. It's the reason why many dance/club/whatever records are also often recorded at 45rpm. If you really crank up the volume in a loud club, it's very nice to have that extra signal level on your record. Sound pressure levels can easily reach 100dB, and if the signal to noise ratio of a common record is only like 45dB, that does mean you have a shitton of noise in the quiet bits. Not that EDM has many quiet bits, but you get the point. At home it's not really needed, but the couple records i do have that run on 45rpm do sound somewhat better than the 33rpm records. By far the worst of the quirky records is Radiohead's Amnesiac pressing. That's 2 10" 33rpm records. It sounds pretty drat good, but is also recorded extremely loud - to such a degree that literally only audiophile grade record players can properly reproduce the final track without inner groove distortion. I have good consumer level stuff (Pioneer PL-12d with audio technica AT95e) but even that setup has a hard time playing the last track without sounding harsh. It looks cool, but they should've just pressed it on 12" and left the inner grooves empty. I reckon that 12" isn't even more expensive despite the extra vinyl needed, because of the extra setup needed to do 10" records, sleeves etc.

The separate electical supply just for the room is amazing. I think that CALtech can repurpose the design of that phonograph to aid in earthquake detection, though. The 3 styluses are definitely overkill. The end of that hit me like a ton of bricks, though.

The very first boxed copy of a computer game I ever got was the 1988 Atari-ST port of this game, despite it being like six years old at that point. The box was awesome because it had one of those little sound chips on it hooked up to a tiny speaker and you could press a button for one of three horribly bit-crushed digitized voice clips (iirc "look at the size of that thing", "use the force Luke" and "nice shot kid that was one in a million"). I listen to most of my music digitally these days, and whenever I buy a CD (usually because it's some rare thing I can't find otherwise) it just gets ripped and then placed on a shelf. Vinyl CAN sound really good but it's also more of a hassle; most people don't have time to properly set up their system, or don't clean their records, or have never replaced their stylus or calibrated the cartridge. I've got a few records that sound better in that format than others, mostly like half-mastered 45rpm LPs, 12" singles and stuff though. A lot of albums these days aren't specifically engineered/mastered for vinyl either, and there are even some loudness war casualties among the re-releases. I've got a 2013 pressing of Bowie's "Heroes" that is notably louder and worse sounding than a repressing I've got from the mid-80s, despite the former being pressed on 180gram vinyl and the latter being on the lovely thin vinyl they used after the oil crisis. Digital is probably the best way to listen to music, that said, I will never use a streaming platform, I don't care how convenient it is, I want control of my files also I can guarantee that I've got stuff that Spotify doesn't. gently caress streaming. Count me in on Team Flash Drive Driving Music. It works great... even though the geniuses who programmed the car stereo have it read the mp3s in any given folder in filesystem order, not alphabetical/numeric order. So just drag-and-dropping a folder of music onto the drive effectively pushes the "scramble" button on it. I ended up writing a little python script to place the files onto the drive one at a time, to ensure they'll come out in the right order. And now that I'm thinking of it, I suppose flash drives themselves are now obsolete for a lot of purposes. It's been a long time since I've used one for anything else except car music, or very occasionally a fresh OS install. I don't even use them for bringing a video file to the big TV anymore, now that I've made myself a local Plex server. But for storing stuff, or moving things between machines, there are better options available now. It's kind of a pity, since they're a really neat bit of technology, and ever since USB 3.0 came around, their speed can even be downright acceptable.

I'm a bit annoyed that I had to convert all of my playlists to use Microsoft style file structures just so they could be read. It makes sense, since Microsoft wrote the Sync software in my Ford. What I absolutely hate is how some cars won't even work with the whole flash drive. My wife's Toyota will only recognize about 5000 files instead of the 6000+ I actually have on the drive.
