One of the more interesting pandemic/ready meal stock pivots I've noticed is Leicester Bakery.

They aren't new, but you wouldn't have seen any of their breads in Sainsburys or the village shop 3 years ago, they mostly sold to Indian restaurants, Balti houses, takeaways, and South Asian food markets.

Now I'm seeing them everywhere, with packaging and instructions that may as well make them a ready meal (or a ready side at least).

I'm almost certain that was due to Leicester being closed down for months on end, but the upside is that they've found a new market for their prepared flatbreads. Also they're good breads.

e: In 270 CE Santa Claus was born.

That book The People's Republic of Walmart made the case that Walmart was the biggest centrally -planned Western economy. It might be Amazon now though.

Yeah there's a good video on that here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuBrGaVhjcI&t=739s

This guy's vids are good. The concepts are generally a bit "Marxism 101" but he puts things in accessible and easily understood terms and I think that's valuable in its own way. He's got 1.5m subs so pretty decent reach.

Basically "markets are really great, they're the most efficient way to run everything" falls down when you realise that large companies try to deal with markets as little as possible - like how Walmart operates its own logistics rather than going out into the free market.

Bullet points from the article:

quote:

- Starmer refused to prosecute MI5 for its role in the torture of Binyam Mohamed, which “delighted” the agency’s chief Jonathan Evans
- Evans tells Declassified Starmer attended his MI5 leaving party the following year, but “does not now recall” if he spoke to Starmer
- Evans could have been criminally liable if Starmer had decided to prosecute MI5
- Declassified could find no record of any other Director of Public Prosecutions socialising with the head of MI5
- But Starmer does not respond to Declassified’s questions about his attendance at the MI5 party
-Starmer also attended “networking reception” for Foreign Office ministers three months before he announced his decision not to prosecute MI6, an agency overseen by those ministers

We're going to have a potential MI5 spook in charge of the country after the next election. I guess it helps further explain why he chose Sue Gray as his chief of staff.

I don't get the point of these conspiracy theories about Starmer. He's the former DPP. The fact that he was King Spook is a matter of public record and part of his sales pitch for the job.

Processed cheese singles are surprisingly good for making cheese sauces without needing flour for a roux (useful if you’re gluten intolerant or can’t be hosed with the hassle), owing to their emulsifying salts. 25g of cheese slices (cut or torn into small pieces) plus 25g of good cheese (grated) plus about 125ml of milk makes a good sauce. Add to a pot, apply gentle heat and stir constantly until all the cheese has melted. Will look like it’s not working until suddenly it does, ready when the sauce is smooth and a spoon drawn through the pan leaves an empty trail behind it (though bear in mind sauce will thicken as it cools).

Theoretically you should also be able to do this with emulsifying salts directly but in my experience this results in sauces with a slimy texture so I do not recommend that option.

Uh, not sure why I wrote this but that’s my 1 in the morning recipe tip.

I am interested in most phases of data processing.
The key to making roux is to do a fuckload at once in a pot. Like 1-3 cm deep. It doesn’t burn nearly as easily with a bigger volume. That also means you can do more heat and get it done faster. It also means you can just keep the rest in a jar or freezer and decant as needed. Also, use a high smoke temp oil like peanut or avocado, and a thermometer to make sure it doesn’t exceed 235 or thereabouts

Seems like the nearest thing we have to a socialist party (or at least one that shows any concern for people) is one with Vorderperson, Lineker, Rashford, Sharkey (Feargal) and a couple of other celebs as the cabinet in waiting. At least they seem to be using their celebrity to highlight issues that Der Starmer ought to be challenging the tories on.

You can also chuck a slice of processed cheese straight into your instant noodles/ramen and it'll melt to give you a delicious rich sauce.

I keep wondering how (and when) the main parties are going to react to the fact that millennials are not as right wing.

I guess as soon as they start voting in numbers I guess.

There's no incentive for them to do anything about it.
If only 1 million people turn up to vote, that's still just as valid as if everyone who's eligible votes. And it'll be the 1 million people who think "this is fine, but it'd be finer if we kicked out all the scroungers and foreign types".

I went to disagre with this. But there is a huge bulk of swing voters who while don't read newspapers, just vote with the 'vibe' of the parties. But that vibe is set by the opinions of those who do read newspapers. So you're probably right.

OwlFancier
Aug 22, 2013

I think a helpful way to look at it is that the parties have their own agendas set by their MPs and the class of people they belong to, and any actual democratic element is an unfortunate side effect. So if the public turns against the interests of MPs then the solution is to make sure they either can't vote at all or can't vote for anything they want.
