Just finished the Black Mountain quest and it's refreshing to have a Fallout game where very few of the super mutants are bad guys. The only ones that have attacked me so far is the mentally ill nightkin (and even among them there's characters like Davison that can be reasoned with) and the mutants controlled by Tabitha. But after (peacefully) disposing of Tabitha the mutants at Black Mountain just walk by me.

I really love that about the Black Mountain area in general. The very first game of New Vegas that I ever played I was psyching myself up for a 'boss fight' with Tabitha as I climbed up towards the summit but then ended up accidentally resolving the situation peacefully by repairing Rhonda and I was so surprised that was even a possibility.

Gotta say, it was a bit anticlimactic to fight several death claws only to reach the glorified shack that is the Brotherhood of Steel's safehouse.

One of the things that always kind of irritates me about the Safehouses and really most rewards in New Vegas is that there is no simple way to repair most heavy armor; you can use Jury Rigging but that only opens it up to four fairly rare suits of armor. I wish there was an Armor Repair Kit that you could scrounge materials for the same way you can for weapons.

Btw, if you're not following Tim Cain's youtube channel he's still posting interesting stuff daily. 2 days ago he revealed that he left Fallout 2 because Brian Fargo stiffed him out of a bonus as punishment because there was a bad bug that took ages to get resolved and Cain refused to say which programmer's fault it was. 1 day ago, to balance it out, he revealed that the "Brian Fargo presents" in the intro was actually added by the team to acknowledge his contributions and Fargo himself wasn't a big fan of it. Today he's got an hour long chat with Leonard Boyarsky that I'm going to get stuck into as soon as I have an hour spare:

these have been fun. stands to reason the guy who kinda dreamed up fallout would have a strict 'no snitching' policy. that rules.

That's absolutely fair, and one of the reasons I mod them in, tbh.

Okay, McNamara is still in charge. The lockdown is ended. Veronica is thoroughly disillusioned by the Brotherhood of Steel considering a troop of paladins not only tried to kill her, but also massacred the Followers of the Apocalypse because they thought she was sharing her knowledge with them. And I've got a power armor.

Something I like about the Brotherhood questline is how it's impossible not to read the mission to join them as anything but a way to get rid of you. To McNamara or Hardin, you're a pesky loose end to their ploy to keep their embarrassing leadership bungles secret/a vicious power-grab using some ancient rules-lawyering and semantics. You've been there every step of the way and they know if you breath a word about it to anyone that they'd get booted off their position. If they get the other Paladins to kill you, it might lead them to question what exactly you've done to earn the Elder's ire, so they both send you off to a mission that they know is a glorified suicide run.

Why would the Outcasts let you join? It's explicitly composed of the BoS members who are xenophobic enough to rebel against their Elder.

I mean the original BoS were strict but it was not impossible to appeal to their reasoning skills by being just That Good. It wouldn't be hard to justify that while the Outcast equivalent faction has no interest in being Guardians of the capitol wasteland, they would be open to recruiting the best and brightest to their numbers, like how the FO1 and 2 BoS were.

That's be a way to explain why they'd be the evil bad karma path though. You'd probably make their quests be going around and recruiting the smartest people to join them, thus depriving the wasteland of potentially helpful doctors and stuff. Yeah you now get pre war tier medical research tech, but you're not allowed to use it to heal the common folk, that's silly.

Makes you wonder how rogue the paladins at the Follower's Outpost really were, hm? But honestly, none of the missions McNamara sent me on was that hard. Two of the vaults for example was vaults that I've already cleared and the worst part of Vault 11 was simply finding the part. Reaching the safehouse was the worst part and that's hardly a mission.

Veronica seems to think they were pretty rogue. If they attack you earlier outside the Bunker she thinks their deaths will be dismissed just as the Wasteland being dangerous. They've lost other bands of power-armoured Paladins before, nothing too strange about it.

It's always amusing when someone is getting some bizarre crash or error, and then when people ask if they're running any mods it's like "oh, well I just installed Blorpy's Real Tiddy Physics Overhaul Total NPC Replacer and Alternate Start Mod, now that you mention it the game was running fine before that."

My read on it is that McNamara wasn't intentionally trying to kill you with those missions to find the parts to repair the bunker, yet. Whether Veronica escorts the Courier with her into the bunker or the Courier unlocks the entrance to the BoS themself, McNamara probably thought the Courier was impressive or resourceful enough to make it inside. If you manage to get the parts, great. If you die, then it's no big loss to McNamara and he can keep the lockdown going.

But once those quests are done, he was definitely trying to kill you since you're the only one who can blow the lid on him making bad leadership calls. The last quest from McNamara involves him sending you to the top of Black Mountain. He can't even claim ignorance that it's a suicide mission. As far as he knows from the logs of those dead BoS paladins, that place was still teeming with Super Mutants and Centaurs.

That, and the rogue paladins slaughtering the people at the Followers' Outpost to punish Veronica makes it very hard to sympathize with their faction.

Bethesda games are buggy pieces of poo poo.

Bethesda games are simply unplayable without mods.
