HA! HA! NICE! WHAT A TOOL!
Battle passes are as much about fostering daily checkins as they are about revenue. BPs in 95% of games are extremely high value compared to other in-game purchases, on the order of 5x more in game currency than just buying currency. So they meet multiple design goals. The first is offering a cheap, obviously better thing that can only be bought once every so often to encourage players to open their wallet up for the first time (opening the door for them to spend more later). The second is conditioning players to log in daily so that they don't quit. The third is that there's a demand from the player for the battle pass rewards so that topping up doesnt seem like an insultingly bad rate by comparison for the swipers.

I don't think giga dopamine is really the primary factor for how BPs are designed its usually a really stable grind with zero volatility meant to condition you to play regularly.

I'm trying to find a new side table I can use for mkb play - the one I'm using is not particularly ergonomic, and that's what I'm looking for (well, something more ergonomic, what I want probably doesn't exist outside a custom build, so something less lovely would suffice)

I'm thinking something like a C table, maybe one of those terrible adjustable rotating tops, but those are usually incredibly unstable

needs to be large enough to support a jumbo mousepad so you can get it in place and have a nice open space for your hand/arm without any strain

most stuff I play on controller, but there's enough mkb titles + general windows use that I want something substantially better than what I'm using

googling the obvious didn't turn up anything that looked great, nor did scouring the 500 chinese tables on amazon with TILDEBOL brand names

I use this thing https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FSGZ6A4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Not sure if it will work for you but I use it with my couch and it's pretty great, swivels all over the place, plenty of room for mouse and keyboard. I've had it for a year and a half and it's still fine.

Lotta people itt glossing over how most battle passes let you buy progress. They aren't necessarily a one time fee. Though at least some have long since removed the most overt FOMO pressure by making them never expire once purchased. And/or not making their contents 100% never coming back ultra exclusive.

Also a reminder that while other games popularized the concept, just like loot boxes and other questionable forms of monetization we can look back at Valve to see some of the early forms. Dota 2 had (maybe still has idk) some real sinister poo poo. Like a loving leaderboard for compendium levels.

Yeah, I didn't particularly dislike Titanfall 2, but I mostly like games that do new or novel things and TF2 felt like a refined version of the AAA FPS which is something I'm not too interested in.

I think the last FPS I put a significant amount of time into were Gunfire Reborn, Remnant, and Prodeus (though I didn't actually play the campaign in Prodeus, just user-created levels)

For all of the complaints about that game, it has the absolute best-feeling moment-to-moment FPS gameplay of all time and I put over 300 hours into it based purely on the strength of how fun it is to move around and shoot things in it, which is saying a lot for me because, well, I generally only like games that do new and novel things, not games that do old things incredibly well.

I never played Titanfall games, but since you mention the past decade and we're still in May, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger qualifies, and I absolutely love that game, thanks to fun cinematic western movie action and a simple story which is hilariously told by your character in a saloon while you play through it. Plus you get to meet plenty of legends during key moments. And it also has an arcade score attack mode should you not feel like replaying the story. One of the bestest single player FPS ever as far as I'm concerned.

How is it now? I only heard of a rough launch performance wise and also there being a lot of grind that needed to be smoothed out. Is it decent with pubbies?

deep dish peat moss
Jul 27, 2006

It's fine with pubbies. I think the performance issues have been mostly sorted out, but I was lucky and never ran into any (I disabled RTX in a config file at launch which seems to have avoided most problems for lots of people, the in-game RTX options didn't actually disable it).

It had a lot of just kind of embarrassing bugs, like the aforementioned RTX option not disabling RTX, certain stats doing literally nothing, tooltips being wrong, etc. A lot of that has been fixed, but it's kind of a running joke that that stuff is par for the course for Fatshark and it still exists to some extent.

There's not much progression-wise (nothing to achieve once you hit level 30) and a lot of players are upset that getting a "perfect" weapon is RNG, coming from the Vermintide series where you could essentially just craft yourself a perfect weapon.

There have been no major content drops since release. I'm under the impression that part of this is because they had to pause development of new content to backpedal on their cash shop plans and do a lot of bug fixing (It had the FOMO rotating cosmetic thing going on but got removed/changed) but

One of the more vocal continued complaints about it is that the voice lines between characters aren't as detailed/interesting because they're not pre-gen characters anymore, they're all player-made and you choose a background that dictates your voice lines. There's an absurd amount of variety in the lines you're given but they feel kind of dissonant because they're not pre-written linear conversations, they're just random backgrounds mashing lines together.

Another major complaint is that you can't choose exactly what mission you do at any given time, you select from a list of ~18 available missions on the mission board. Some of them have fun modifiers like playing in pitch blackness and having more of a certain type of specialist enemy available, but again you can't choose exactly what you want, you have to choose from what's available at the mission board. This can lead to repeating the same mission a few times in a row if you just select random queue.

Also, all of the maps are pretty samey environment-wise. They're incredibly detailed and fun to look at, but they're all various industrial slums or sewers. There's no real environmental variety - no jungle worlds or ice worlds or anything.

Most of the ill will from the community has come from things like the devs taking a 6-week collective vacation right after launch without communicating about it with the players, and just generally that it tries to be a "live service" game when it seems like the devs don't really know what that entails.

The good is hard to explain but all of the little pieces come together so well - the way weapons feel, hit feedback on enemies or environmental objects, particle effects, sounds, lighting, relatively high skill-ceiling mobility, etc. They all just come together in an incredibly satisfying and fun way. I didn't particularly expect "more" out of the other stuff so I wasn't disappointed by it and just had fun with how satisfying the gameplay was.

I played it about a week ago, it's still much the same as at launch. Roughly the same performance (though that wasn't a big issue for me), the item/weapon shop had moved in the hub but otherwise had the same selection of boring cosmetics while all the good ones are over at the paid currency store. Technically some new weapons but it was like the starting selection where a lot of them are just variations of one another, at least it seems like you can buy specific ones now instead of having to wait out the store inventory rotation. They've implemented the techpriest thing with adding blessings to weapons but I didn't play enough to use it.

Game is still fun because it was always fun but I didn't see much improvement in the systems surrounding the actual gameplay. Same as then, they would still benefit a lot from shamelessly stealing design choices
from DRG.

I should also say I think Titanfall 2 is a pretty good game, just not transformatively extraordinary the way some goons talk about it. (And I second the wish for a mech game taking after it.)

My biggest beef with it is that it has all these creative ideas and a decent enough setting to support some cool stuff, but for the most part it just falls back on samey "aim down sights of your AR and pop bad guy heads" gameplay. The factory level emphasizes this with some boring killbox areas where enemies are just kind of randomly dispersed to plink away at you. Wall running and whatever other movement tech either doesn't matter at all or is mandatory for a platforming segment. The mech stuff is very limited in the campaign, though BT as a character is pretty good. The plot feels a bit thinly sketched and suffers from a pretty well known false climax problem where BT sacrifices himself and everything blows up like two and a half times before the game is actually finally over for real. (Though the final sprint where you're just obliterating dudes with the smart pistol is glorious, even if it doesn't really make much sense.)

What really chafes is that given TF2 is a leap ahead from the first game's basically non-existent campaign, and given MW1 -> MW2 was also a pretty noticeable improvement, a real deal Titanfall 3 would probably slap. But oops! Speaking of battle passes...

deep dish peat moss posted:

I guess also speaking to this, I played TF2 in close proximity with Syndicate and like, those games aren't markedly similar in any surface level way but they nonetheless did kind of blur together for me. So maybe this is part of my problem.

I'm due for a DOOM 2016 replay, but my original opinion on it was very mixed, if that does anything to further calibrate my tastes.

System Shock 1 remake is good, I never actually played the original (just SS2) so I can't comment on how it "changed" but what I've seen is pretty cool.

The one thing that throws me off a bit is that the game is kind of easy? You get absolutely loaded down with grenades and ammo, and your energy sidearm packs quite a punch and can be recharged. I have a feeling that the game was originally harder because the UI in the original was kind of a nightmare, but now that it is easier to use the game is easier overall.

yeah the original wasn't particularly hard. you can pump the difficulty if you like. it's mainly about wandering round the spooky space station.

I actually miss the dart gun a tiny bit, I always thought that was cool and unusual for a videogame.

i've seen people complaining about the graphics but I love the approach they've taken (they look modern, if chunky, from a distance, then when you get close it's all pixellated). it's a good combination of effective and nostalgic.

In most battlepass systems that buying levels thing is just a trap option for the stupidest whales.
A few are really bad about it though, for example Dota2 which actually maybe was the first game to do a battlepass(?), or at least did it before fortnite. They had a thing in 2021 with a unique "arcana" skin for Spectre that was only available by buying $150+ worth of levels in the battlepass. It was impossible to get a high enough level just by doing the free missions (even after already paying to unlock the battlepass in the first place).

here's a contemporary resetera thread about it (i couldn't find any proper articles, maybe my google-fu is weak)

resetera guy posted:

So what happened?

Normally, every year 25% of the profits from the Battle Pass go directly to the International tournament prize pool. In last year's battle pass, there was no TI because of COVID, but that prize pool would be saved for this year's TI. The Battle Pass released yesterday was an all new Battle Pass, and none of the profits go toward any tournament. In every Battle Pass, the rewards are spread out over earning levels during the Battle Pass. Levels can be earned or bought, but there's typically a limit on the number of levels you can reasonably earn without paying outside the cost of the pass. During TI battle passes, they're usually chock full of rewards that even if you don't make it to the best one, you'll still get a lot.

This Battle Pass is different. There's only a few significant things to unlock on this Battle Pass. The major highlights include custom creeps, a Persona for Dragon Knight (that gives him his look, voice actor, animations, personality, and more from the anime, Dota: Dragon's Blood), and the Spectre Arcana.

As I mentioned about the Arcana vote before, Spectre was the winner of the Arcana vote in last year's battle pass. All of the winners of the previous arcana votes are available to buy individually, for the standard price tag of $35, and are still available today. Spectre's Arcana took a lot longer to come out than they usually do. This can be partially chocked up to COVID, but I also have a feeling it was ready sooner and saved to pull this move.

Spectre's Arcana is not available for purchase for the normal $35, and instead it is locked behind level 330 on the Battle Pass. The Battle Pass costs $7.49 to start at level 1, $26.99 to start at level 50, and $41.99 to start at level 100. The prices for the level 50 and 100 starts are cheaper than just buying the level 1 and buying the levels.

Looking at all the ways to earn levels by playing the game, I came up with these figures:

Weekly Quests: 7000 * 8 (8 weeks shown at the top) = 60000
Cavern Crawl: 53 250 point chests, 9 2000 point chests. (53 * 250) + (9 * 2000) = 31250
Nemestice: 1500 points per week, 8 weeks. 8 * 1500 = 12000
60000 + 31250 + 12000 = 99250 = 103.25 levels

Unless they add some other method of earning levels (which is possible and they have done in the past), there's only 99 possible levels you can earn without paying. The Battle Passes in the past had many more ways to earn points, such as wagering, where you get a number of tokens per week and can wager them on your own games. If you think you'll win a game, you can wager tokens on it and if you win, you get double the amount you wagered. There is no wagering in this Battle Pass.

If you buy the level 100 starting Battle Pass ($41.99) and get all 99 levels, you are still only at level 199, you have 131 more levels to go until you get to that Spectre Arcana. This costs $54.94. $54.94 + $41.99 = $96.93. Arcanas by themselves cost $35. This Arcana effectively costs AT MINIMUM almost three times the cost of a normal Arcana. You do get other things in the Battle Pass, but most people's general expectation was to be able to buy the Arcana that won the vote. In past Battle Passes, runners up in the previous year might be on the Battle Pass as Arcana rewards, but those did not win the vote.

iirc (I never bought a pass), the gambling chits where "free" and so firmly fell into a "use them or lose them" category - people where spending them willy-nilly, even on doomed matchups. It was highlighted in that post as just another way the ceiling was lowered for non-payment progression opportunities.

In hindsight, they probably had to be implemented as such in order to avoid gambling laws.

"Actually I do not play any form of video game as I believe that they are an act of creating life that is a sin against God's will, please stop talking to me about them"

whereas I’m in a discord server with like a quarter of my company

Things could be going better

The starship troopers game makes me hate early access. If I wait until they have the official release, will all the servers be dead like every old FPS?

I hope not and I feel like it's going to be a question of how large and frequent the updates are. If they just drop a new gun or balance tweaks every month then it'll probably get drip fed to death. If they do large updates with some frequency then it might be okay.

Imo sometimes with these kinds of games it's better to let the playerbase fall off for a while between updates rather than try to keep numbers up. That way people don't get tired of it from trying to milk every small thing you put out and instead will get excited when stuff actually drops.

You can also change your visibility by right clicking one of the Steam icons in your taskbar.

Ah sweet, had to go into the Settings to add it there but that works.
