She at least took the place of most of those lovely Kes and Chakotay episodes from the first 3 seasons

In retrospect, what with Jamake Highwater Jackie Marks' influence on the writing, Chakotay getting shoved into a box in the later seasons is probably for the best.

Which is a shame, because Robert Beltran rules.

Just looking at what Chakotay got to do in the first few seasons-

-Repeatedly fooled by Seska
-Got captured by a child Kazon
-Finds some aliens that I guess are supposed to be the basis of his tribe's beliefs?
-Gets stuck on a planet with Janeway when they have some kind of disease
-Gets used by some former Borg to get what they want from a derelict Borg cube so they can create an 'enlightened Collective' or whatever
-Is used by dinosaur aliens to try and prove that the dinosaur people and humans both come from Earth

That's really about it

To also be fair, this is one of the best episodes of Voyager.

Looking forward to strange new worlds in a few weeks! Also I think I might pick up that new game.

Yeah but the funny thing about Distant Origin is that the episode is told from the perspective of one of the alien scientists so I don't think it even necessarily qualifies as a Chakotay episode.

That's fair. What a dumb fun episode. I stan any voyager episode that starts in media res. It's an ongoing joke I have...with myself (it happens a lot).

If the baseball episode was done today they'd probably take advantage of the increased ease and available of CG to have all sorts of holodeck fuckery going on it, like Quark reprogramming the physics for the Vulcan team to make their hits and pitches travel super slow, or give Rom aim hacks to compensate for how much he sucks, or just beam Odo into space because gently caress Odo

Now see, SNW I would at least trust to play it completely straight to the point where it's just a basketball game with the whole cast in makeup and that's all it is. And it would absolutely rule.

If anyone could pull it off, it'd be him. Hell, it was a treat just to watch the subtle way he changed Saru's walk from a sway to a swagger after the character went through Kelpien Puberty.

The Chakotay episode I remember the most in later seasons was this weird dream boxing vision quest episode where it turns out that some alien is trying to make first contact with him through his vision quest or something. I remember it being kind of an interesting concept but bad episode which was pretty common with Voyager much as it was with TOS.

Thinking about how Voyagers medical bay set had that nice orange area that they could use as a “quarantine” room for people when the story required it. The TNG and DS9 sets didn’t really have that which made stories about the disease of the week awkward. Hell DS9 barely even had a “set” Bashir was practically working out of a broom closet.

I know I know DISCO reference but how Burnham survived in a jail cell a major structural damage because the force-field emitters stayed intact, having a physical quarantine sections in sickbay seem excessive. By default every bed can be a quarantine section.

That was meant to be the main surgery bay, which TNG had in the middle of the room with the big circle over the top and the fancier bed, and ostensibly there were medical containment fields projected around that circle.

But that didn't really stand out fully from the others so they emphasised it in voyager by giving it its own segment instead of having in the middle.

Redundant safety systems exist for a reason, and this is extremely basic poo poo that is probably embedded in regulations that Starfleet should rightly be reluctant to change. Risks like "What If the emitters in Medical get overloaded by a power surge in the EPS conduits? What if there's no power from the warp core and the auxiliary systems fail? What if the Borg release a contagious self-replicating nanoparticle that attacks shield emitters? What if Species 8675309 can phase through forcefields and then spray a bioweapon from its blowhole?"

....Oh god. Now I'm imagining the number of blowhole jokes Kimolu and Matt must make in a given day.
