I’ve seen the Behind the Bastards Jack Welch episode mentioned in several different internet places lately so I listened to that and enjoyed it, and have been enjoying a lot of their other episodes. Currently listening to the cigarettes episodes and how they’re linked to lots of modern things like trading cards and Top 40 lists!

Harry Potter books are poorly written and contrived. JK Rowling does suck.

It’s just that when we were kids the thought of a magic world is awesome. The setting is what’s interesting, not the characters or writing or plot.

And that setting makes less and less sense the closer you look into it. The theme park stuff is incredible though and might be the best take on the material.

How Did This Get Made got suuuuper stale for me, but have you tried Paul Scheer’s other film podcast, Unspooled? It’s a much more sincere/serious discussion with an NYT film critic about movies they loved, or at least feel were culturally significant, and deciding how they feel about them now. The recent-ish episode that got me hooked was on Magic Mike, or the Young Frankenstein/Blazing Saddles/OG Willy Wonka Gene Wilder trio has some really good stuff in there.

Hm, I might have to give that a listen. My favorite episode of HDTGM was the Jupiter Ascending episode, which was less about them bashing the movie and more about them having a genuine discussion about trying to figure out what went wrong during production, because iirc, there was some good ideas that just never came to fruition, and I think everyone on the episode was really frustrated at that.

BtB is great. Definitely jump around, but I recommend the Behind the Police and the current Vince McMahon miniseries that's going

There is also the Dollop/BtB crossover on Henry Kissinger which is also 6 episodes long. The History of the Illuminati is particularly funny too. The most recent Christmas episode, where he talks about a non-bastard was really good too.

I've only listened to two How Did This Get Made episodes, a very good one on Punisher: War Zone where they interviewed the director Lexi Alexander and a not very good one on Fast and Furious 7, though in fairness I just love that franchise too much and know too much about it so I was just getting really annoyed at minor mistakes they would make about the film.

How did this get made had a pretty good run of episodes for a few years, but they eventually ran out of interesting dreck to talk about, and they always leaned way too heavily into their bits. That Punisher War Zone episode is absolutely fantastic.

I think the last one I listened to was one about some Netflix movie about a heist on an airplane casino or something.

Yea, HDTGM has the problem of eventually you just run out of fun bad movies, and you end up with just bad movies that no one is really interested in talking about. This is probably nostalgia bias or something, but I feel like the 80s and 90s had more fun bad movies, and now we're just getting a lot of boring bad movies. I blame Disney.

Yeah, there was so many good bad movies you can talk about to begin with, and in the current age, most movies are at worse mediocrely bad and aren't worth talking about

I think the process of making movies has changed so that modern bad movies aren't as loving insane older ones could be, but you're probably also correct in that there's a ton of completely forgettable bad movies from the 8-s and 90s that you would have seen 20 minutes of on cable tv and then think "this is boring" and switch channels, so you don't remember those ones, but something like Mannequin sticks out in your mind, or a star gets famous later so you remember that time Drew Barrymore was in a terrible erotic thriller.

Always a good sign for a company when HR sends an email to a whole department saying they'll be scheduling "stay interviews" in the next few weeks. We're a pretty small engineering team, and had one person give his notice on someone else's last day, which I guess was somewhat of a red flag.

The goal is to "create a formal line of discovery facilitating open and honest feedback." Good news, they will be confidential conversations between us and HR :jerkbag:

Glancing at her wiki page and noticed she was randomly in a Depeche Mode video.

Just guessing they wouldn't have needed to tell her to do this. Just let her get out there and cook and you'll end up with what you're looking for.
