As with every other "lookit what those weird kids today are up to, Gertrude" article in the history of print media, it is not clear how much of this is stuff that hep kids in 1947 were actually doing and saying, and how much was made up by the author (or made up by the kids, to screw with the author).

Here's the wikipedia article on Continuously variable transmission, and here's a page about the pros and cons. It seems like a good idea on paper, but is usually more trouble than it's worth.
