this is a good question and one i dont have an answer for really

i've never dated anyone not in the true sense i guess. the girlfriend i had before everything happened was a girl i had known since middle school. we just sorta started hanging out and it went from there. i would have married her i think

most dating is done with apps now right. cousin todd told me about some of them.

on top of being sent to prison for murder i also have pretty low self esteem because of my body dismorphic disorder so even without being an ex-con it might be difficult for me. if i meet someone new they can tell something's off about me, so i usually explain soon after meeting them where i was for 30 years. a couple people were fine with it, and a couple people i've never seen again.

trying to date isn't really something i should be doing anytime soon i guess. i wouldn't even know where to start if someone said yes.

as a kid with that girlfriend, our 'dates' were going to the janky rear end putt-putt golf course, the movies, bowling, or burger king. there wasn't much else in our town

Dating apps loving suck and they are honestly why dating completely sucks now because everyone thinks they are *just one swipe away* from finding ~the perfect~ person.

Basically, what I am saying is you are in the same boat as a lot of people these days. Welcome!

Also there is a LOT of Porn Porn that thousands of random people make and post themselves, it’s wild.

you don’t need to use an app to date. I’ve never needed to use one. apps are one way people connect, but they have the problem of having too many people with anxious-avoidant attachment styles, as the more normal people will partner off and then not need to use the service for a while

I’ve known a few ex cons who did some serious time and they didn’t seem to have trouble dating. there’s gonna be people who are attracted to you because you’ve been to prison. Body dysmorphia sucks poo poo tho, but at least others won’t have the same perceptions you do of you. you don’t gotta rush this stuff tho, I’m sure you’ll find someone with time in any case

I've heard that some people behind bars play D&D and games like it to pass the time.

This makes sense to me; personally I played a lot when I was in the Marines and stuck on ship. There is a lot of downtime at sea; once you get your stuff clean there's pretty much nothing to do, you're pretty much just stuck in a metal can - so I can see the similarities. And D&D books and dice are relatively portable, you can take them from place to place with you.

Is this true, or is it not really a thing?

You can't have dice in prison usually so I heard that inmates make little paper decks with numbers 1-10 or w/e and draw for their rolls. And it's mostly played by chomos. This information is from a single thread made by another goon ex-con so maybe that was just at their facility

I think that's on a prison by prison basis. OP said they tried to play but people weren't interested iirc.

I've heard it's popular in some prisons though, just generally, not chomo specific. But it's going to depend largely on the specific crowd in the prison.

Congrats on the kitty, Harv. "Miss Priss" is already a pretty awesome name for an old white cat.

I was the one who asked about the gang stuff. Good to hear that keeping your head down and watching your mouth goes a long way.

I just got into Diablo III this year, not sure when I'll get to IV (my computer just barely ran it during a test weekend) but if you loved Gauntlet you should be pretty into this series.

Video games are a lot more fair than they were when we were kids. There are still hard ones but you're not gonna run out lives or continues for most things these days.

I'm really happy about your cat, Harvey. It is heartbreaking to me when someone can't take care of their pet anymore. It's good karma to take on that responsibility and care for this poor, older creature so she doesn't have to live in a shelter for the rest of her life.

If you haven't had cats before, it can take a long time for an older cat to fully warm up to you. Just let it do its thing, give it treats and stuff to play with, and eventually she will get bored enough to overcome her fear and start becoming more affectionate.

I'm tearing up thinking about it. Nothing makes me sad like animal stuff. We have rescued a couple older animals and it's hard. They have more medical problems and they die on you sooner than if you got a pup or kitten. But I don't think there's much more noble than taking that burden, and helping something who is helpless and adrift

Ultimately it's up to you, posting it here would be just fine, there's no rule in having more than one thread. You wouldn't need to "manage" the other thread as much as this one, goons will just post like crazy all sorts of funny names and you can just sit and watch. Naming threads are a common thing and typically end up with some hilarious content as goons run with ideas and make pun after pun and feed off of each other. The benefit would be to just separate the content a bit to keep this thread focused on the Q&A, but again, it's entirely up to you and doesn't matter either way. You could also ask goons for photoshops and "MS Paints" of your new kitty that match suggested names, this sort of thing is what this community of internet rejects really does well. I think you'll have a good laugh and it will generate some good content.

To jump on the media recommendations bandwagon, given that it sounds like you like animals and nature, I'd highly recommend checking out BBC's Planet Earth and its associated spin off (Frozen Planet/Blue Planet) nature documentaries. They're absolutely beautiful to watch and I find them quite relaxing.

the little personal moments are what matter to me, not a video that a billion people will see. so many times i sat in my cell and thought 'man i sure wish i could watch a caterpillar munch on a blade of grass' or 'i wish i could remember what carpet feels like on bare feet'. so those are the things that are most important to me because so many small moments passed me by.

but those same screens also amaze me with stuff like-
an app for everything. like the bird app someone suggested. there's even health and mental health care apps. that's wild to me.
amazon, where you can get anything.
grocery store and even library self checkouts.

so i get the appeal but man there's just so much more to life than a drat screen. but this is stuff i should talk to my therapist about and not rant on something awful ahaha

I've never had alcohol except for pruno, prison hooch, and that was only a few times. i don't want alcohol. it played a big role in the all the bad stuff my stepfather did. and the alcoholics that came in had a rough time with withdrawals. it seemed worse to me than heroin withdrawal but i don't know. i never did that stuff either. i mostly used weed, acid, and crack while inside. i never did any of that before prison. for the last 10 years or so of my sentence i was clean, though. i can safely say i will be substance free for the rest of my life, no doubt. i can't think of anything i haven't already experienced that would make me go back to it.

thank you, your cheering means a lot to me.

i did adopt a kitty yesterday. she is about 9 or 10 years old, and was in the shelter for 2 weeks after her owner became very ill and could no longer care for her.

she is all white and is the softest thing i have ever touched in my life. she has been hiding while adjusting to her new surroundings but i will post pictures soon and ask for names.

the ease of getting a date has generally made people much worse at dating, it's true. this is something i have dealt with a couple of times talking with ex-cons, even ones who were only in for like 5 years came back to a completely changed dating world if their timing was just so.

the most astute one said something that still sticks with me today and kind of captures why i hated the apps when they came out and continue to hate them today: because it's so easy to get a date, nobody stops to think about what they want, so every date sucks. after you go on like 10 dates that suck, you think every date will suck forever.

the old ways of meeting people, like going to meetups, church events, or whatever did a better job of setting up chances for success because the people you were talking to already had at least geography, schedule, and something in common that you both showed up for. apps give you 10 words tops and all of those could be lies. even if i say i like x, you've got no proof i've done x in the last 5 years. so then you get to the date, you ask me about it, and it turns out i'm a liar. great, that's your afternoon down the drain.
