I'd be surprised if it's not out within the next year between it being MGM and they're close to having all of Lynch's catalog on Blu. Janus also has distribution rights to the essay film Lynch/Oz, which would be an obvious choice for an extra.

For that matter, good chance we'll get UHD upgrades of Fire Walk With Me, Eraserhead, and Blue Velvet before too long. FWWM is getting a UHD in a few other territories and who knows, maybe Paramount will license the show for 4K.

I don't know much about them but they appear to be late 50s/early 60s Westerns that I'm sure fell into that hole in history that most Westerns did if they weren't either Spaghetti Westerns or John Ford Westerns.

They're the five collaborations between director/writer Budd Boetticher and star/producer Randolph Scott, all Columbia westerns. Indicator released them as a box set several years ago, Five Tall Tales. Lots of fun, they're all around or under 90 minutes each, and have beautiful 50s Technicolor look. These are also new 4K restorations by Sony compared to the Indicator box, so it's awesome it's also getting a UHD version. I had speculated Sony was going to do their own UHD set of these or package with more Mann/Daves Columbia westerns (like 3:10 to Yuma and The Man from Laramie), but this will do nicely.

Worth a blind buy, especially during the July sales. Price is a little steep considering the Indicator box would have a $65 MSRP today, but with a $75 price tag while on sale and having UHDs, I think it'll still be worth it. These are going to be demo discs in terms of Dolby Vision and HDR, even going from how the old masters looked.

Probably going to pick up the whole lot, but After Hours 4K is a day one pickup for me. Holy poo poo.

Between Criterion giving The Rules of the Game and the Ranown Westerns a chance for UHD, this increases my hope that we get the Truffaut/Doniel box on the format, as well as other deeper cuts.

edit: drat, Criterion is at SIXTEEN 4K releases for 2023 so far and we still have five more months of titles to be revealed!

After Hours is mostly fine, maybe I'll give it a rewatch sometime, but I sort of noped out when I saw that one scene with some fairly offensive gay stereotypes. I mean, it was the 80s at the height of the AIDS epidemic and homophobia/gay panic but still.

Like, I'm sure you can still enjoy Eddie Murphy Raw but... oof.

Erotic Thrillers:

I can vouch for De Palma, especially Body Double (Dressed to Kill is pretty divisive but highly regarded in his filmography), Ken Russell, and The Last Seduction. Jade is a wild movie, but it is objectively bad and doesn't make any sense. (Written by Joe Eszterhas, writer of Showgirls and Basic Instinct; botched by low-point Friedkin).

I have not seen, but plan to watch Body Heat, The Comfort of Strangers, and Bound.

Weed movies will depend on what types of movies you like to watch while high. What mood are you looking for?

Kung-Fu: You've still got the Michelle Yeoh collection which has Yes, Madam!, Royal Warriors, Police Story 3, and The Heroic Trio. Really they're all bangers. Half a Loaf of Kung Fu. Police Story 1 & 2 and the rest of Starring Jackie Chan Collection is still up.

If you're also into Samurai films: Last Hurrah for Chivalry, Lone Wolf and Cub series, Zatoichi series

Comedy:

Eating Raoul, Fishing With John, The Phantom of Liberty, The Gold Rush, Playtime (or other Tati), My Night at Maud's, The Player, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (might be too taboo, depending on your taste),

Visually Captivating Art House:

Daisies, Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, Sweetie (also a dark comedy), Slacker, Karel Zeman's The Fabulous Baron Munchhausen, the Prismatic Ground Presents collection, House, La Jetee (short film), Don't Go Tellin' Your Momma (short film)

May I also suggest some musical films with lots of visual flair or great moods:

The Young Girls of Rochefort, Monterey Pop, Space Is The Place, The Harder They Come, The Wicker Man

Heroic Trio loving rips but is alarming in how often it shows children and babies being maimed

Still, every time a Criterion release announcement drops I keep hoping I'll see it pop up. Watching it on latenight cable was my gateway into misspending a fair amount of my youth tracking down bootlegs and Tai Seng DVDs.

Man, I wish I connected to this movie the way that apparently every good director ever born has. I didn't get it at all. And I love languidly paced black and white movies!

Also Wes Anderson should direct something more directly inspired by Exterminating Angel. In general that is a way bleaker list (tonally) then I might have expected from him.

As well as many cool pride things and Marilyn Monroe Criterion Channel has a screwball spotlight this month which includes What’s Up, Doc? which I just watched for the first time the other day and which is easily one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen in my life, go watch it.

Also a method acting section with a conversation between Ethan Hawke, D’Onofrio, and Isaac Butler (I don’t know who that last guy is) and a bunch of great flicks including two of my favourites Five Easy Pieces and Carnal Knowledge
