That's not really any worse inked than most the old stuff.
Thing is that the original panel was probably half the size it is in digital form, and printed on newsprint, so it didn't have to be that well inked. Back then this art was disposable, nobody thought it would be collected and analyzed in the future, they pounded it out quickly and cheaply (for the time).

It's more that "Democracy" isn't IME really a thing you are a member of, you can be a supporter of it, a member of a democracy or a democrat but I assume that in the US that's more associated with the party.
