Let Caim roast thousands of soldiers with the power of a PS5 imo

The bar was extremely not very high. Its still janky as gently caress to play but kinda fun.

From what I remember the combat in 3 is kind of Nier esque (though not quite as smooth) though there are still flying segments like the previous two games

Taro discovered gatcha games.

But beyond SINoALICE, there was also Nier Re[in]carnation back in 2021 which was a mobile RPG and was incredibly Taro in its story. Then you have the side projects he's worked on in conjunction with the anime like the "music video" for Antimony. And that Voice of Cards series of games.

His next project is 404 GAME RESET which is a bullet hell mobile game.

I wonder if a Drakengard remake could even work today, what with the incredibly edgy content in there like pedophilia, cannibalism, getting to slaughter child soldiers with a madman who can't stop smiling about it etc.

Yeah that's fair, I do forget sometimes how Hot Topic that game got. I guess a remaster could be an opportunity to take a second pass at the tone, too

I mean, in Nier Replicant theres a LOT of child murder, and there’s probably worse things you can have in a game than “pedophile who is ashamed of his desires”

Replicant has it obscured by making the children monsters though. In Drakengard they are just straight up normal rear end human children.

To be honest the combat in 3 felt better than the combat in Automata, since it at least knew what it was. It still wasn't very good combat, but it was serviceable. The main issue was that the level design was still pretty bad, and them adding jokes about not liking jumping puzzles did not help.

At this point I think I'd prefer a big game from Yoko Taro that had nothing to do with Drakengard or Nier, just because that gives them way more freedom. I don't want him to die in the gacha mines, and I also don't want him constrained to just these sorta games.

No matter what he does now people will expect a twist linking it back to Drakengard/Nier and will be disappointed if there isn't one. Even after playing the demo people expected Voice of the Cards to be a secret Taroverse game.

Admittedly I completely forgot about Voice of Cards. I didn't bother with that one since it seemed like the cards were an aesthetic choice for a fairly standard jrpg, rather than having an effect on the game.

I only played the first one but yeah there was no real reason for them to be cards, it felt like a budget thing. Which hey, fair enough i guess

I did appreciate that it included tactile dice rolling, i'm a sucker for that.

I would like another big game from YT, but it doesn't have to be Nier. I'd like him to just be able to experiment and play with whatever ideas he has, and hopefully won't be pressured by companies to do the same things he's done successfully again.
And I'm sure he has plenty of ideas. He once pitched an idea for "Gun Soccer."

I did everything and sacrificed my save data. Fun game, I loved the way it used the interface for storytelling. I wasn’t really expecting All To Be Revealed but while the ending was tremendously cathartic and full of vibes, I don’t think it made any sense. Which is fine but just to be sure I’m not missing something there was no grand plan behind YorHa, right? The goal was just to forever war against the machines, then get all the androids killed, then delete the data, then ??? Both androids and machines are trapped in an endless cycle without meaning, and the machines want to escape it by going to space in their big cannon

Again this isn’t really important to my enjoyment of the game, I’m just curious.

I assume they were originally supposed to wipe out the machines and reclaim the planet for the humans? But yeah with the humans all dead they're now just following their old directive pointlessly.

IIRC the androids really wanted to win the war (even if the ones who made YorHa knew they weren't really fighting it for humanity), and saw YorHa as a breakthrough that could turn it around, but they had no idea how hopeless that was because they didn't realize the war had lasted as long as it had by the machines' choice. The machines were basically just keeping them around to fulfill their purpose of fighting the enemy that the aliens left them, and then to farm exp for evolution once they found a way to escape those orders.

HMM okay. So was there a reason the meat box/soul box/god box were so excited about the player showing up to unlock them and get into the main tower? Do you think we’re meant to read that as the machine network egging on the androids to attack them in order to ???, or is it more directed at the player - “come jump through these hoops, we know you’re gonna do it, we promise we’ll give you a prize?

Dabir
Nov 10, 2012

I don't remember where it's made clear, but YorHa were always intended to be expendable. The black boxes they run from are basically machine lifeform tech, so the other androids don't consider them 'real' people.

Abhorrence
Feb 5, 2010

A love that crushes like a mace.
The idea was to create the "myth" for lack of a better word, of humans on the moon, who were in contact with YoRHa on the bunker, then deliberately let the machines destroy the bunker. Now the regular Android forces have "something to fight for" without ever having to worry about dealing with contacting or seeing the humans that don't actually exist.

it's not explicitly stated, but I got the sense that neither side really wants to win the war. Machines need an enemy to give them purpose, as their entire reason for being is to "destroy the enemy," while Android high command, or whoever masterminded YoRHa, can't win because then the humans would logocally come back... which can't actually happen, and then the whole house of cards collapses.

The end run in the last act was an attempt by the robots to super jump their own evolution by seeing how far 9S/A2 would actually go to stop them and learning off of it while simultaneously putting them in an unwinnable, despair-laden position. But a wrench gets thrown into the works when the machine core consciousnesses start arguing on the efficacy of allowing the androids so far into their stronghold and you get the mini-civil war which launches the whole network into chaos. During which, Eve and his portion of the network upload themselves into the rocket and eventually give 9S the option to join them.

As far as the purpose for YorHa, a lot of the detail is not revealed in the game, but it's already been hit on that the have no purpose since humanity is actually extinct. But what is not really covered in the game is YorHa's origins. e.g.; YorHa is only like...15-20 years old as an organization by the beginning of the game. And it's creator knew that the idea/religion of humanity was necessary to keep the android forces fighting. What he didn't anticipate was getting merc'd by the protype 9 unit once he learned the truth. Then Unit 9 decided to keep the grift going because he also realized it was necessary, but also allowed the machines to build in the back door into YorHa's servers because he knew if he learned the truth, other YorHa units also eventually would and cause issues.

The end of Route A isn’t the end of the game, Route B is basically a director’s cut version of the A Route but it’s also the prelude to the last like third of the game. That’s the important one that gets most people.

You’ll know when it ends

If you’re gonna do side quests make sure they actually move over to the “completed” status before you carry on to the next route because if you don’t finish them all the way then their progress resets between routes

I wish someone had told me that you gain access to fast travel between checkpoints after a decent number of plot beats in the main story. I wasted so much unnecessary time running back and forth across the desert completing side quests that I could have done much more quickly if I'd only advanced the plot a bit more.
