It was for the Apple pro which is already a product where you basically say gently caress it, I’m going to expense it for work, another $700 on top of 30k won’t make anyone blink.

It’s 50/50 to me whether this is an Apple Watch or if apple’s refusal to understand gaming will sink this over the medium term. The first Apple Watch was a joke, overpriced and lacking in features. I bought a s7 and it’s a great piece of kit nowadays. I have zero qualms recommending it.

This feels like a similar play but I really think you need more entertainment options than just future tv (work apps don’t count) and Apple has just never been able to comprehend the gaming side. Either way, this is probably a long play from them; some sort of slimmed down version is going to be a real part of the future, it’s only a question of if there’s a vr winter first - and I know they want an early hand in any AR pie.

I'm just constantly sad about VR because I really love it especially for flight sims, and if it dies it's gonna suck a lot to go to trackIR or something like that. None of the companies except rarely valve that makes successful headsets seems to actually be concerned with doing anything interesting in the space and would rather try and somehow force workers to hate their jobs even more by sticking something to their face. There are applications for something like this but all I see is people becoming even less interested in the tech and it just kinda fading away like 3d TVs or something.

The Quest 2 is $300 again and it does everything cool and it even comes with controllers as a bonus

I will say, if you compare the price to other augmented reality devices (hololens, magic leap 2) the $3500 doesn't seem so bad.

Those are absolutely not consumer devices though, so the price, while consistent with the others in its class, is still not really consumer ready at all.

I spend a lot of money and time on hololens at work and can speak VERY highly of the quality of support we get from Microsoft and our ability to lock down devices. If Apple could offer the same sorts of B2B friendly features and the FOV of the vision is more than the Hololens, I'll order 5. 2 for the engineers, 2 for designers, and one for IT to fiddle on.

The idea of spending that money on myself for a personal device feels like buying a forklift in order to take a spin around the neighboorhood after work.

it's not in the same class of AR as those though, right? don't hololens and magic leap have true optical passthrough rather than camera passthrough?

The bit about how good 3D movies look is interesting. 3D Blu-ray rips are very obviously low resolution in comparison to 6-8k VR180, so hopefully this implies Apple has been able to convince studios to release some remastered 3D titles.

That has me a bit more excited.

I wonder at what stage mainstream devs can start developing apps/content for it. We are still 6+ months till launch, and that is a LOT of time to get mass feedback from the public army of developers.

Apple said they partnered with Unity so presumably anything that leverages their engine should technically compile for the iVision. If you're a small or mid tier app developer and you're using unreal, you'll probably be thinking real hard about doing your next app in unity instead

Everything from Nintendo switch games, Android up to AAA platform games use Unity so a lot should be available eventually. If you can map "pinch fingers together with right hand" -> A button and "pinch fingers left hand" -> B button with apple's API then you should get the full load of Quest 1's VR shovelware ported to iVision pretty quickly

Stuff like space pirate trainer and pistol whip will probably cross compile with literally 5 minutes worth of work

Did they say there just are no controllers or it just doesn't come with controllers?

I can totally see apple having controllers, they're just sold separately.

Or I guess having to use 3rd party controllers and a market of lovely ones popping up because you need ones that are specifically compatible with it, like how way back in the day ipad/iphone controllers existed like that when you had to jailbreak iOS to just use what you already had.

Apple has a partnership with Sony for a few things and a lot of Apple hardware supports the Playstation controller natively. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those worked.

The selling point seems to be the micro oled 4k panels. But... they aren't an Apple exclusive, they were presented in the AWE show by the manufacturer. Given the headset is going to release in 2024, it's possible that a few months later other companies will use the same display.

Probably likely that apple bought an N year exclusivity contract with whatever fab is making them. But yeah in three years everyone will have 4k displays.

Apple has always been about premium user experience but they're kind of late to the party and I think the big reason why their stock "tanked" today is they had no magic bullet, no killer app or "why the gently caress should you buy this, and why won't this collect dust on the shelf like every over VR headset invented??"

Quest 3 looking like a pretty good buy at less than ⅒ the price. Maybe upgrade to iVision if you find yourself plugged into the matrix 8 hours a day

If they actually delivered on the VR side I might have tried to figure out some way to get my hands on one. Not that I don't have an interest in the AR stuff, but for such a product to make sense for me it'd have to deliver on being a truly all-in-one device. Something that can replace a laptop instead of serving as an external screen for one, while also being a full fledged VR headset with the controllers and blah blah.

I know I shouldn't be surprised at this, but... I'm surprised at tech sites eating the entire marketing from Apple and calling the headset an 'AR device'. Ars even justified the price saying it was an AR device, and the competition like Hololens 2 and Magic Leap 2 have similar prices.
With that line of thought, a Quest Pro and a Quest 3 are also AR devices!

Even though I like controllers, use VR for gaming like most people here, and have no interest in buying this headset good for them.

Bad for first gen adopters of it who aren't using it for very niche work stuff, but good for Apple. (Though, then, why would you buy this?)

Everything about this headset that makes it impractical for what most people here use VR for is good for the sake of pushing the tech. Make hand tracking much better and commonplace, revolutionize the industry etc.

Just don't do it on a headset I actually wanna buy.

It's a mixed reality device. Which is a fancy term for a VR device (closed device, two panels and lenses in front of your eyes, and with the current tech, limited field of vision) with two rgb cameras outside doing 'passthrough', in other words feeds a real life video of what you have in front of you, as if the cameras were your eyes.
Mind you, people who have done the demo say it's the best video passthrough in the market, bar none. But it is what it is.
