Such an amazingly beautiful and intricately made flick. So many of the shots I just wanted to pause and admire like a painting, because that's what so many of the frames were, fine art. The animators need to be doing victory laps 24/7 after turning this out. I loved what they did with the first movie, but this one is just so far beyond that it's hard to put it into words.

(As for the sound thing, back when my brother and I saw the Blade Runner sequel they had it jacked so loud that during the scene with the spinner in the water the music was like a loving jackhammer. I complained about it and the manager said that's how they were required to set the dials. It was a painful experience. I'm thinking the next time I go to a theater for a blockbuster it's going to behoove me to sit as far away from the loving speakers as possible.)

I just got done watching Across the Spider-Verse and I think it might be my favorite superhero movie. Like, ever. What the hell, that was just so insanely good. I can't count how many times it just made me feel so much. So much heart and emotion. Crazy s-tier primo capeshit.

By the way, it's right at the start of the movie so I feel like it's not fresh in anyone's mind by the end, but I loved the design and animation of renaissance vulture. The way they blended his design with the other characters and Gwen's world was incredibly cool and a great tone setter.

Talking about the score again: In the beginning with the first spot fight, they start mixing goose honks in with the record scratching during that segment, fantastic.

We have decided to decline your offer of a butt kicking.
The opening sequence is astounding. The movie wastes no time in getting down to business and having every moment pull at least triple duty. It's an amazing action set piece. It's an effective prologue to set up the fundamental conflicts for Gwen. It also is cleverly meta. The statue that is cut open to reveal a bunch of smaller versions of the statue is so brilliant in a Spider-Man story that is going to be broken open to reveal a bunch of different Spider-Man stories inside. More of a commentary on what is art, but also still art, indeed.

The way Miles got jumped in the 42verse makes me think the whole evil Miles thing is a fakeout, since neither Miles or his uncle actually SAY anything incriminating or hurt him besides the knockout (the movie frames the whole thing as very grim, yes) it felt more like knocking someone out to interrogate them cause what are they supposed to think when an obviously 'fake' Miles double rolls up on em? I think it'll end up being a universe where Miles just turned out as more of an Batman/Punisher antihero.

mystes posted:

I think that's very likely and it would especially make sense if the idea is for Across the Spider-Verse to set up the idea of predestination in a way where we're supposed to assume that the Prowler has to be evil and then have the next movie reject that

When you think about it, there's nothing that even inherently makes the spot have to become a villain either; while to some degree that's a reaction to being rejected by other people because of his appearance, it also kind of feels like he just felt like he HAD to become a villain because he's supposed to be Miles' nemesis (which is pretty weak motivation even for a spiderman villain) when he could have just as easily just decide to be a superhero instead, so it feels like after this movie, the next one will be in a very good position to argue that the incorrect belief in predestination is responsible for a lot of the problems if its inclined to go in that direction

I think it makes sense that if protagonist Miles can choose to reject what is supposed to be his fate, then alternate Miles should also be able to be the Prowler but choose to make the Prowler more of a batman style hero rather than a villain

While I don't think there are many people who haven't seen the movie this deep into the thread, I'll warn of discussions for the very end of the movie.

I think what they're doing is showing not that Miles is inevitably heroic, but that he's always, as Gwen says, "amazing." This is what Miles becomes in a world that doesn't have Spider-Man. Thing is: Now this world DOES have Spider-Man. So Miles can be inspired all over again. Something I'm going back and forth on is if I want to see the different MIleses pop up to prove to 2099 that he belongs, or whether this Miles simply does that on his own. Come to think of it, I'd love to see a Miles from a world where Peter Parker is Spider-Man and Miles is never bit. Does he become a super-scientist or something?

Having Alt-Miles be a villain may also reinforce that a Captain should not die in Miles case as a cannon event because his positive influence was important in shaping Mile’s future.

No matter how one loves, there are always different aims. Love can take a great many forms, whatever the era.
"Projectionist" was part of my duties as a Floor Team Leader when I worked at Cineplex, and even back then (six or seven years ago), all of the projectors were digital. On a night where everything was working, I didn't have to be up there at all.* Sometimes on Saturdays I had to go up and press play for a DVD that was plugged into the projector's HDMI port.

There were two dusty old analog projectors in the corner and they always made me feel like I missed out on something special when I saw them.

Spider-verse was better on second viewing. Better theater and sound, made a difference. People seemed engaged with it and enjoyed the movie plus theater was full. Good sign I hope for a strong second week.

I WAS THERE
WHEN CODY RHODES
FINISHED THE STORY
Saw it a second time with a friend this evening and WOW my sound mixing was 100% better haha I could hear almost ALL of Hobie’s dialogue loud and clear

It’s still an incredible film, at least 8.5/10, and the visuals simply are the best ever, but there were a couple moments and sequences I thought could be shorter/excised and the film might be a LIL better for it.

Still, I’ll probably see it at least once more in theaters.

My friend also didn’t know it was part 1 of 2 and about two minutes before it ended whispered to me “this seems like a lot to resolve…” I didn’t say anything but was internally chuckling.

For me it was like the entirety of Across the Spider-Verse hit like the what's up danger scene from the first film, lol. I was on an insane high the whole time really. It's just so well made in every aspect that I find meaningfully affecting; the visuals, the characters, the music, the story, the performances. Perfect. Just absolute top tier movie making, not just capeshit, but movies in general.

I mean gently caress, at the end when Miles glitched out in what he thought was his universe, that feeling I got when that happened is such a rare thing. I'm getting goosebumps typing this out thinking about it lol.

One small thing I love in something they set up for stakes is one character specifically said they have two days until Jefferson dies to Spot. It seemed like a huge amount of time when I was thinking “they’re gonna fit two days into the next thirty minutes?”, but it’s a great set-up for Beyond. A hard time limit to save Miles, to save Jefferson, to save everyone. Having that laid out in advance is just kind of nice to have.

Probably more coincidence than anything but, two days was also the timeframe of the original film, how long it took miles to gain enough confidence in himself to save the day.
