The number of people saying they switched to fuckin Reddit from SA lol. Not enough child porn, maga enthusiasts and bots here for ya? I mean welcome back but What made you leave it for reddit? One of those periods where this place was going crazy with bullshit forum wars?

Love how the other part of this API thing is that NSFW content won’t be in the API so you have to use the official app if you want porn.

Due to the sheer amount of active users there I’d say I’ve mostly been treating Reddit as a hyper active news hub for all of the musicians or genres, tech and games stuff I follow in a way a single thread here isn’t able to do in quite the same way. It’s obviously never felt quite as personal as SA as right away I can notice some familiar names as mods whereas I couldn’t list anyone from there at gunpoint.

I can't get any good MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries tips now because the subreddit has gone dark indefinitely. The official Battletech thread in GBS isn't even about Battletech anymore because it has no IKs and even though I keep reporting all the Gundam/Macross posts the mods don't seem to care. So you could say I'm pretty upset.

Wendigee posted:The number of people saying they switched to fuckin Reddit from SA lol. Really it's just that a lot of other hobby communities I used to visit pretty much all moved to reddit and then to discord. And yeah there's the Google search + reddit trick to actually get real human responses instead of bot driven glorified ads.

These stupid mega sites are a curse and will all eventually go to poo poo so that they can funnel infinite ads into people's faces. Wikipedia seems alright I guess. If we're going to have mega sites they should at least be some sort of non profit run by donation. It's too bad Twitter/Reddit will probably be able to keep going due to cultural inertia at this point.

This is the one big difference that's kept me on Reddit for the most part - the threads here equivalent to the subs I read there are either dead, extremely slow, don't exist and don't have the interest to be maintained, or don't work in megathread format (and it's not like we'll get subforums for them). Three out of four of those are solved by "huge active user base". Unfortunately everything is moving to goddamn Discord instead, which is a flat downgrade with no benefits.

Trying to google answers to questions is loving impossible thanks to all the low-effort SEO sites out there. So this kinda sucks but whatever, Reddit's page design also sucks and it was painful to navigate. Best wishes to all the Redditors that aren't scumbags, live your best life

I doubt the API pricing is because they’re annoyed a couple users aren’t seeing ads. I mean it’s part of it, but surely the bigger part is realising how much money they lost out on from LLMs using their site to train for free? Place gets a lot of posts.

Official Reddit app still does not support horizontal mode even on the tablet environments, constantly keeps sending alerts for things that you have already seen, and has "unable to contact Reddit" errors occurring randomly while every other app works perfectly. It is utter garbage.

Yeah, that's a fair point. Reddit being a permanent fixture near the top of pretty much every Google search is a bit of an issue. If I don't have to read a Quora thread ever again, it'll be a minor upgrade to my overall quality of life.

So what does this mean for Reddit in the short and long-term? I see a few possible scenarios but would be interested to hear your thoughts. Scenario 1. The Reddit admins don't back down and most of the subreddits that shut down voluntarily reopen when they realize their protest did get any results. Without the API tools most of the good subreddits eventually turn to poo poo. I think this is by a large margin the most likely outcome. Scenario 2. Exactly the same as scenario one, and this seems wildly unlikely, but the mods shutting down largely don't cave. The the mods of the big subs are replaced and the smaller subs that the admins don't care about are ignored. Things go to poo poo the same as scenario one, just faster. Scenario 3. The admins delay the rollout and just do it later. See scenario 1 and 2. Scenario 4. And this seems unlikely but reasonably possible. The admins allow API use for mods only. This stinks for people who use third party apps but life goes on. Scenario 5. They promise 4, then don't do it. What happens is unclear but not great. How truly awfully Spez, the Reddit CEO has acted during this is shocking, I really didn't think he would be this tone deaf. My money is on Scenario 1, but what do you think will happen? Wendigee posted:The number of people saying they switched to fuckin Reddit from SA lol. Yeah, SA was going through some annoying old guard vs. new guard stuff and Reddit just had more relevant content for stuff I was getting into. Never had that sense of community there - especially knowing a poster was full of poo poo so you could ignore them or at least enjoy their trolling with some context.

Wendigee posted:The number of people saying they switched to fuckin Reddit from SA lol. I kind of feel like it was an adhd thing. At first it was shiny and new. Things moved quickly, and there was a lot of good information. And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth. And for two and a half thousand years, the forum passed out of all knowledge.
