Deathwatch is looking potentially actually broken. Hellfire Rounds gives Anti-Infantry 2+ to two Kill Teams so in conjunction with any spammable Devastating Wounds models it does an insane amount of damage. A Kill Team with 3 Assault Cannon Termies and 7 Combi Weapon dudes outputs 42 shots in 12" that turn into MWs on a 2+ against any infantry in the game. It's nuts.

Who has this many combi-shots? Proteus can get 3 assault cannons and 7 long vigil ranged weapons, for sure, but I may be missing this combo. You can also put Hellfire on Sternguard who bring 30 DW shots, 6 of which are damage 2. Either can get Sustained Hits 1 from the detachment rule and Sternguard shoot again if they kill an infantry unit with the 30+ mortals (Oath'd) they dish out. They can drop in a pod to get into guaranteed rapid fire range, too. Drops some serious hurt on an elite brick.

The really ridiculous thing is that you don't have to choose between any of that if you put a captain in the Sternguard unit.

You can use the Hellfire Rounds stratagem on two Kill Team units for 1 CP, then use it again on another unit for 0 CP in that phase, as long as it has a Captain attached. Even at the conservative end where the units are at 24" from their target and don't get extra hits from Sustained, that's 70 attacks with Anti-Infantry +2 and Devastating Wounds from two Kill Teams with 7 veterans + 3 terminators, and a unit of 10 Sternguards with a captain attached. If they're within 12" range, the number jumps up to 94, of which 30 deal 2 MWs instead of 1.

Finished a Krieg Plasma gunner over the weekend, because I had a sudden urge a while back to go back and improve on my old Krieg colour scheme. Which turned out pretty well after looking for ideas elsewhere.
Even made another attempt at weathering for it.

It's a recast I got as payment for assembling the Guard Vet kill team a while back. Really scuffed cast at places, but it works.
I have a couple of more recast Kriegers I got at the same time, but for those I need a Centaur. Or some vehicle they can ride in while sitting on a bench.

Yeah Gladius still looks good thanks to army wide Advance+Charge, but the Space Wolf Strats and Enhancements seem pretty good. Give a Captain the Anti-Vehicle 4+ and Anti-Monster 4+ keywords and they can really pop off on their special turn, or every turn with a thunderhammer.

You can't allocate wounds to a character to tank attacks like that. -1 damage is still loving OP as hell if it just straight up negates 1 damage weapons but sadly you can't cheese it like my original idea of giving the wolftail talisman to a judiciar in a bgv unit and just laughing at anyone trying to take them off a point.

Oh drat, no point putting Wolf Guard in blood Claws then either :smugged:

(but it's a good thing)

Wolf Guard terminators look really good though, you can get assault terminator config, with the Fury of the first rule to help those Hammers and chain fists hit, and throw in an assault cannon or heavy flamers for kicks.

Edit: yeah talisman is still pretty great for stopping your character getting sniped out by a horde of precise termagant or just halving the damage of eliminators and rangers and stuff. Though it's probably better just to use a Wolf Guard battle leader for the 4+ FNP for that effect and taking a frost weapon or the anti-monster/vehicle weapon for the Sagas.

Bjorn with a lascannon might be handy for sniping light vehicles for the saga.

Nope. Bodyguard rule states you can't allocate wounds to a character as long as their bodyguards are alive (unless the attacker has Precision).

drat as I just realized this means putting a terminator pack leader for your Long Fangs won't let them tank hits the unit takes. And I don't know that getting to re-roll a battle shock test once per battle will be worth attaching one to the unit just for that. It does let you put another heavy weapon into the unit I guess and maybe fish for "Saga of the Beastslayer" but you'd need the Long Fangs to almost kill but not the target before your character then opens up for the hopeful kill shot.

Alright I just came up with a pairing that I think could be cool, and I might further stick such a pairing in a land raider.

Ulrik the Slayer + Wolf Guard

- Slayer's Oath "start of fight phase...select enemy unit and re-roll hits of 1 and wounds of 1" (against character, vehicle, monsters get full re-roll)
- Chosen Companions "while a CHARACTER model is leading this unit...add 1 to the hit roll"
- Heirloom weapons hit on a 3 which means 2s will hit and 1s get rerolled

Throw in some storm shields and maybe some combi-weapons or plasma pistols.

I see your ulrick and wolfguard and raise you a regular rear end Chaplain with powerfist and frost weapon with 15 blood Claws.

Blood Claws have same profile on charge as wolf guard except for 3+ to hit but have +1 to wound from Chaplain.

Chaplain with frost powerfist will have 6 strength 10 Ap-3 precise attacks with +1 to wound.

If they hit an oath target it will vaporise.

Pretty much that +10 Hounds of Morkai for LOL one shotting Magnus on turn 1 (note have not run numbers on this)

Edit: the math is that each Hound does 2.7 mortals to a Pskyer marked for death with Oath without any other strat. So 5 hounds do a handy 13.6 mortals, just in melee.

Adding on to this for nice bits of luxury modelling kit

1. Trade quality drill bits from a hardware store, particularly 1mm are much sharper and tougher than the cheap ones you get in packs. Less of a thing now that metal models are out of fashion but still very nice to have. They cost about £1-2 each so still very cheap as gifts go.

2. For fancy nippers the Tamiya 74123s are pricey but hard wearing and produce very nice cuts compared to regular hobby nippers. Some people recommend God Hands but they're extremely expensive and their main selling point of being super sharp to produce clean unstressed cuts isn't really a factor for Warhammer models that are going to be painted anyway.

3. Some needle files - Vallorbe produce excellent needle files for about £9 each. You really only need the flat and maybe the round ones so it's not going to be that pricey.

4. Citadel's Mould Line remover - the older version is supposed to be the superior one. Not essential but very nice when assembling plastic models.

5. Brushes - I would second the recommendation of a Raphael 8404 size 1 or 2. Also Rosemary Model Drybrushes cost a similar amount and are a game changer. Get a Large.

I ended up ordering the Tamiya nippers and a set of Army Painter or whatever the name is drybrushes since I couldn't find Rosemary Co in stock in the US or the Rafael in size 1 or 2. The nippers got there first and my victim is very happy, he posted a picture almost immediately of him getting ready to build a Land Raider.

Tossing out some hobby gift advice for Eargesplitten or whoever else is encouraging a new hobbyist, in a form that can be handed off to parents or relatives:

The DSPIAE nippers are luxury ones but don't go for quite as much as God Hands. (They're very good clones, good enough to have their own rep.) They go for about $40-60 and some of the Gunpla importers sell rebranded ones; if you look them up, you'll get an eye for which single-blade rebrands have the same exact shape but with an engraved store logo. They're a "treat these carefully" kind of gift, so maybe not for someone younger who hasn't ruined a set of clippers or two. It's something you find in specialist hobby stores, mainly online.

If they're old enough for Xacto blades, Xacto tool blades are super handy. Concave curve blades (with a sickle style edge) and hobby saw blades are super useful, the former for cleaning mold lines and the latter for kitbashes or base modeling, but lots of people just don't know that they exist. A second Xacto handle at the same time is handy as heck; a cheap one or clone is usually as good as a name brand. No need to get the big chunky "comfort" handles that cost like $20-25 and are aimed at papercrafters. (I like the Xacto Gripster or Excel K18, both less than $10, but any handle that you open or loosen somewhere other than where you grip is good.) Hardware stores, craft stores, scale model stores, or game specialist stores are all possible places to buy the specialized blades, and you can get Xacto handles pretty much anywhere.

A jar of Vallejo terrain paste paint. It's super fun to play with and makes bases look cool as heck on it's own, and comes in a 40 ml bottle for $7-8. Just pick whatever kind of thick mud looks neat to you, since it can be repainted once it dries. Scale model/RC stores and some specialist gaming stores will have this; any place that sells scale model tanks and isn't a pure toy store is a shoo-in. If specialist model or game stores don't carry Vallejo paints, they probably know who does, or have a comparable brand to recommend. (Citadel is GW's overpriced brand so not that.)

Green stuff, with a set of sculpting tools, ideally containing a pointed metal awl tool, a spatula of some sort, and silicone-ended sculpting tools. (They look like brushes, and cheap ones still do the job.) Green stuff is flexible, smooth-textured air-drying modeling putty and it's an absolute gamechanger. The tools are the ones that are super useful all the time; there are lots of tool sets for sculpting but lots of them are filled with useless crap or tools aimed at other types of sculpting. Green stuff is usually sold as a blue and yellow tape, or occasionally small pillars of yellow and blue material. Specialist game stores definitely sell green stuff, and modeling or RC/drone stores might. Any kind of generalist craft store might occasionally have the putty and will almost certainly have the tools. (There are other types of two-part epoxy clay, but they're more advanced and situational. Green stuff is a gamechanger when you first learn about it and everyone can use more.) A big bottle of generic moisturizing hand lotion for a couple bucks is a good companion with this, since it's the best tool and finger lubricant I've yet found. (Lasts longer than water, but still evaporates, rather than leaving residue you have to wipe off when you use grease like Vaseline.)

All of these things are things people may not know they need, but are immediately and obviously useful, and all of them are things they can use more of even if they do use them already. And except for the scalpel blades, they're all good for any age or skill level as long as they're past putting things in their mouths.

This is an incredible guide to plastic cement and what you might use the different types for. (I have no idea if that store is any good, since they're based in Canada.) Those brands and Revell are all good in my experience. Some people do like thicker cement (and I've used Revell's thicker tube cement before with some success) but they can be messy and thus destructive. It used to be thicker cement was the only option if the smell of thin cement made you sick, but limonene works okay if you're okay with clamping or bracing sometimes.
