Neat!

Some underling told Luka the numbers were 40 and 100 and he just assumed the thousand part. Wasn't Luka offering to store planes and parts last time? Might as well ask about some nukes as well, couldn't hurt. Come on down Putin to Luka's Stor-A-Lot! Need somewhere to store all those T-14 Armata? Not so Hypersonic missiles? Spare nukes? Fish blocks? Russian dictators get a member discount on any locker hardened against radiation. Free bag of peeled potatoes while supplies last but don't worry there's a lot for some reason. Couldn't give the peeler away, wore right down to the Rogozin.

Interesting article about how Russia flooding the market with their G7 capped oil is pissing off OPEC.

quote:

Russia’s goal, it seems, is to get OPEC members to push oil prices as high as possible so it can undercut them all below the capped level at which it is officially allowed to sell oil due to G7 restrictions. That strategy appears to be working for now: India and China are gorging on Russian crude at record rates, ignoring Western sanctions, and OPEC’s core members have been losing market share.

But this is a dangerous game for Russia. Its oil is expensive to produce and the supply glut it is creating is pushing down global oil prices, which at the weekend sunk below $70 a barrel. It could eventually see Russia selling oil at a significant loss, harming its ability to fund future military operations.

Their OPSEC has been laughable since the beginning. Pretty much everyone knows where they are. Russian soldiers often aren't issued secure communication, resorting to civilian cellular tech. They have posted photos and videos to social media with full Metadata attached.

It's a joke. Russia is fielding a Vietnam era military while the West has built the Ukrainian army into a cutting edge machine. Everything from professional discipline to Intel to OPSEC to equipment is miles ahead of Russia. Russia has men and things that go BOOM. That's it.

ATACMS?

ATACMS!!

Ukrainska Pravda posted:

Oksana Markarova, Ukraine's ambassador to the United States, said that since the end of May, Washington has "changed its tone", commenting on the possible transfer of long-range ATACMS missiles to Kyiv.

Source: Markarova in an interview with The Page, European Pravda reports

Quote: "If before all the answers sounded like 'Just forget it', then now for the first time we heard that the issue is being discussed," Markarova said.

According to the ambassador, negotiations between the American and Ukrainian parties, which concern political and military issues, are usually non-public.

Quote: "But there are no insurmountable red lines, and there are many possibilities about which we first heard 'no' and then heard 'yes'. It's not always because there was a clear ‘no’ position and it changed to a clear ‘yes’ position – it's because there is a large set of factors involved in getting each opportunity. And the political readiness to provide assistance is an important, but far from the only, factor," Markarova emphasised.

She added that in the issue of arms transfer, the US considers a number of factors at once, including availability, training and supply, integration with weapons systems already available in Ukraine, availability of weapons in sufficient quantity, finding such a capability not only in the US, but also in other partners, the manufacturing complex that has to support this, and the logistics.

ATACMS are surface-to-surface missiles that can fly about 300 kilometres, roughly four times the range of the missiles used by the mobile HIMARS systems that the US began providing to Ukraine last year.

Previously, the media reported that the Biden administration explains its reluctance to transfer longer-range ATACMS missiles to the Ukrainian side by the fact that in this case there may be too few of them left in the reserves of the American army.

Last week, the US Congress introduced a resolution calling on President Joe Biden's administration to hand over ATACMS long-range missiles to Ukraine.

It's like Steak-umms, but with more remote "smoking incident" capability!

There's been bipartisan noises coming from congress about giving AFU these weapons, so Biden's probably feeling more comfortable discussing it and entertaining the idea. Which won't be total game-changers per se, but they'll definitely shake things up a bunch.

I thought that there weren't enough ATACMS to make a difference in Ukraine, because US wants to hang on to a certain amount in their inventory, and no-one is making new ones at the moment? Like, at best "few hundred of them" that can be turned over to Ukraine, globally, distributed between several operators not all of them openly supporting Ukraine.

We certainly have enough to "make a difference" but we can't make more. However, these missiles are Old Tech from 20-30 years ago (that's 1990s-2000s era) and their replacement PrSM (Precision Strike Missile) is still coming on-line. If the pentagon feels that the PrSM rollout is far enough along that we can spare the older stuff...well, then the conversation gets interesting.

Alternatively, we can probably spare a few dozen of them to give Ukraine limited long-range capability so they can attack distant targets. That may or may not be bridge-shaped.

isn't that what the PrSM missile program is for regardless? The first missiles are supposed to enter service this year, with an improved seeker package being added in '25.

I still think it's just an excuse. Recall that form a long time they were saying that Ukraine actually doesn't need long-range strike capabilities lol.
  • ATACMS is 30 year old stuff that's being replaced right now with PRsM
  • They're shooting them at nothing as a show of force in Korea
  • Its not an anti-ship missile so wouldn't be particular useful for Taiwan
  • The US has the Air Force, Navy and Marines aviation to blow poo poo up
  • If the supplies are tight, surely they could find, I dunno, a dozen out of 3,500 that had been built? Even that would be useful to take out a bridge or some high-value target.

IMO they're either still somehow worried about "escalation" or concerned that they'd just get shot down and not be effective.
