From the Guardian’s live blog:

Peter Dutton says David Van 'should no longer sit in the Liberal party room'

Peter Dutton statement:

Since the airing of Senator Thorpe’s allegation yesterday, further allegations in relation to Senator Van have been brought to my attention overnight and this morning. As such, I met with Senator Van this morning and a short time ago, I advised Senator Van of my decision that he should no longer sit in the Liberal party party room. At the outset, I want to make clear, very clear, that I’m not making any judgment on the veracity of the allegations or any individual’s guilt or innocence.

I hate those weasel words "I am not going to say anything about whether he is guilty or innocent. But many people have made enough allegations against him for me to punish him. But I am not saying he's guilty, Oh no."

Also that "alleged" sexual assault only gets you slightly demoted. And the fact that this fuckwit isn't fighting his demotion as hard as the nazi Victorian Liberal woman fought hers.

Since the airing of Senator Thorpe’s allegation yesterday, further allegations in relation to Senator Van have been brought to my attention that I was already largely aware of and happy to ignore until they were made public. As such,

The Spud is just playing the odds, no real action or discipline but it might hurt his run at PM if he now continues to ignore it.

It's not punishment for Van, it's distancing himself/party from what is about to happen.

Honestly god damned shocked to see Dutton do that, I assumed his response would be "Thorpe be crazy". There must be a raft of allegations against Van not to close ranks around him this early.

There was actually a private safety and rescue group back in the 80s, really ground breaking stuff. They even had the only multi-person barometric chamber in the southern hemisphere.

Then it turned out the guy in charge was siphoning all the money into his own bank account and everything collapsed, because it was the 80s and that's just what famous Australian businessmen did.

since 2019. he was vaguely part of morrison's faction at the time but has been unaligned since the election loss. he was already facing a preselection challenge for the next election since he didn't have much of an internal base and had done absolutely nothing of note in his term.

Member for Face Eating Imported Cat party discovers what party he is in.

quote:

In the letter, Van said he was resigning from the party but suggested he would remain in the Senate.

“Given the Liberal Party’s wholesale disregard for due process and natural justice in relation to allegations made against me, I write to resign my membership effective immediately,” he said in the letter.

“I cannot remain a member of a party that tramples upon the very premise on which our justice system is predicated. This is a travesty of justice and I reiterate that I deny the allegations made against me.

“I resign also acknowledging the cruel irony of doing so amidst public discourse about the weaponisation of allegations and the role of the rule of law, which has at its centre the presumption of innocence.

“I am deeply distressed and hurt that I have not been afforded procedural fairness in relation to these claims.

“I acknowledge the hundreds of members who have shown me support in my final days as a member. I am grateful for their belief in my honesty and integrity. I have worked tirelessly for the party and fought hard for its beliefs over many years.

“I will continue to fight for what I thought were the party’s values – just not under its banner.”

He's moved to the Former stage but sounds like the gravy train will continue.

not an unexpected path for him to take, but his term is up in 2025 so it'll self-right (unless the whackos have so fully infested the viclibs that he's allowed to re-join in time for preselection)

Also, he's jumping off the Libs, (" I wasn't pushed, really. I am resigning of my own free will."), at a time when the Victorian Liberals are so unpopular that he is more likely to get elected as an independent with a public profile.

Albeit that profile is of a gropey rapey prick, but ...
