Map progress carries over with capital city waypoints unlocked. Altars of Lilith carry over as well. The renown you get for the map progress + altars of Lilith will be automatically added to your renown bonus for a new char.

It sounded like the account wide renown bonuses are permanent through seasons. So even though they're resetting side-quests, there's no reason to do them unless you like walls of text.

Gems stop being a big deal a little into wt4 since you don’t need to pick them up anymore. I feel like the people ok with the renown solution haven’t gotten 5 renown in all the zones because it sucks.
