so what’s with the air quality health index used in Canada and the air quality index that folks keep discussing itt? assuming it’s American? but the aqhi only goes to 11, which is just like, a skull and crossbones.

The aqi about half way thru the event surpassed 500 which is as high as the scale goes. They figure it got into the mid 7s. I later asked a firefighter acquaintance why the don’t raise the scale and his response was something like “what so they can tell you to stay in doors harder?”

Finally got power back in MS after being off since Friday. The Saturday storm made it worse, at least I got to see a lighting strike up close and personal, about 15 yards out.

Nature man, wild poo poo. nothing idiotic about it necessarily, there’s no real way to know when or where lightning is gonna strike within a broad radius of conditions being appropriate. sometimes you just gotta be outside, or are under the eaves reading because you’re in your home. my one close up experience was during a gentle spring shower on the screen porch and BLAMMO all of a sudden this big azalea in the back yard got smoked. you could see the bolt spread out along the ground all crackly, it was absolutely nuts. never again, hopefully haha

When I was a teen, I went backpacking with some friends, and we camped on top of a tall mountain (tallest for 30 miles around) when a crazy thunderstorm kicked up. Two inches of hail, our hair was standing on end, St. Elmos Fire, and we could smell ozone. Definitely the closest I've ever come to dying.
