iroc.dis posted:Question for the random goon who works in the wind turbine industry. Do these things have any kind of fire suppression system in them? Considering their usual location in the middle of nowhere, running water out to them would be a bitch. But maybe some sort of waterless system using gas suppressants? On the other hand, maybe fires just aren't that much of a problem. I dunno. I'm not a wind turbinologist, but I looked at some stats and there are about 4-5 fires per year in Germany that I could find. Surprising, actually, because of the energies involved. There doesn't seem to be anything special in terms of fire suppression equipment in them. They do let them just burn because trying to fight a fire in the nacelle is basically impossible anyway. So all the fires I could find totalled the turbine.

There was a fairly high profile accident where mechanics were in one, a fire started between them and the ladder, and they died. The solution they came up with to avoid that happening again was an amateur's rappelling set up instead of fire suppression. Which, you need multiple egress points for fire safety anyway.

zedprime posted:I forget the reasoning but there's something specific. Maybe that there's no suppression tech that would be human compatible while putting out the fires of that magnitude? My guess is that there’s no good way to fight the fire while the turbine is still bringing energy into the system, and no good way to make it immediately stop when an emergency is detected, so you may as well save a few bucks and put those toward rebuilding it later

zedprime posted:I forget the reasoning but there's something specific. Maybe that there's no suppression tech that would be human compatible while putting out the fires of that magnitude? It's probably that a wind turbine fire is unlikely to spread and cause damage to things other than the wind turbine, and the cost of including a fire-suppression system in every turbine being greater than the cost of the occasional wind turbine loss to fire.

If you've got high winds and a canopy you need to just bail. Edit: Also there were no other weights on that thing, so their bodies probably doubled the mass. Tom Scott has a video on one of those emergency rappel systems. Realistically, nobody will be close to the turbine when it catches fire. They run remote controlled and if they run into issues, they shut down and page engineers. If something goes wrong beyond what an automated shutdown can handle, the forces involved will discourage anyone from coming close. Anyway, I took this picture a few years ago. Wind turbines are rad as gently caress.
