I believe the sub’s hull was manufactured by Electroimpact (https://oceangate.com/news-and-media/press-releases/2021-1208-5-crewmember-submersible-dives-3800-meters.html), a Washington based company that, uh, maybe check their controversy section on Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroimpact

Wait wait wait... I was just looking at this pic, isn't the hull just a solid block of carbon fiber? Did they just drive screws into the loving hull of one of the worlds deepest submarines to mount a monitor!?

I mean, okay... there's probably still plenty of material to resist the pressure, but that seems to be creating a great place for a stress fracture to start.

Look at those socks looming in the foreground. It'd take about twenty minutes for the entire sub to smell like those socks.

I’m assuming the carbon fiber is just an inner liner used like drywall. They seem to have lights that are embedded behind the carbon fiber

Since the hull is protected by Christian prayer and other magic powers then it was probably an electrical problem in the subwoofer.

Look at this I think I found the design flaw. You see one end of the submarine seems to have it's end missing. Like that going to be a pretty big problem if you don't want any water getting in. You see that's why you don't go with these sort of fly by night operators, they miss those sort of details.

Judging from this guy's tweets - this whole OceanGate outfit seems unregulated and as a niche tourist industry in international water, possibly certified.

This situation could be very similar to Aloha Airlines Flight 243 where an over-used hull failed and depressurized.

Unless I missed them getting intermittent contact with the sub, it could have just cracked and imploded. Which would mean all this "race against time" stuff is just for show.

A 1000m depth. If a submersible is cracked, the water fills the airspace in about 100ms, and creates a compression ratio of 100:1 (a diesel engine is about 13:1) which ignites anything inside at 20,000°C.

At 3800m it's a 380:1 compression ratio.
