The best possible way forward would be to keep a lot of the big swing high concept sci-fi stuff and put some new spins on it, because trying to do a 1:1 adaptation is going to result in a lot of bad TV no matter how much they pump into the budget.

I started rewatching GoT recently and got about halfway into season 1 before just petering out and losing interest. The production design is fantastic and Sean Bean and Mark Addy are outstanding but otherwise it is kind of rough imo. So many terrible performances. Every scene with Kit Harrington or Aiden Gillen is hard to get through. Sucks because I remember Gillen being great on the Wire.

So few can bring enough to the table to make it work like the stars of the 80s and 90s, even if they've got some actual acting chops. Jeremy Renner is impossibly boring as a leading man, but when he plays a creep in Assassination of Jesse James you're glued to the screen. You can put together a laundry list of the Charlie Hunnams and Jai Courtneys of the world and you'll probably find at least one role where they play an engaging weirdo that charms you.
