Could be a natural tint that gets accented, sort of like how a lot of lipstick exaggerates natural lip colors.

The 32nd century Federation President on Disco had Cardassian features including a spoon that wasn’t colored, but she’s also a human/bajoran/cardassian hybrid, so I always just assumed it was the Cardassian equivalent of lipstick.

Jesus christ Q is a monster in "Death Wish." His whole trickster act takes on a whole new meaning when he's belittling Captain Janeway, insulting her for her gender, and then trying to get inside her pants ALL AT ONCE. I feel a bit creeped out, honestly.

Honestly when Q isn't playing Judge, I don't really like him very much. He's a dick and a nuisance despite how outrageous the performances are. DS9 having a single episode with him and Sisko punching him in the mouth is honestly the best way to have handled him. Good loving riddance.

nine-gear crow posted:Q's whole desperate horny rear end in a top hat act really only works when its playing off Picard, doesn't it? Not just Picard but I think the other TNG cast as well. Like when Riker appears, he's instantly in "gently caress you Q" mode and it works in a way the other DeLancie interactions don't (in contrast, the suicidal Q is excellent with Tuvok.) Riker's also unusually loud for Voyager - like Jonathan Frakes is playing Riker exactly like he should be, it's not some watered down or old and pudgy Riker out of Enterprise or Picard - but he's shouting and the main cast just doesn't do that as much on Voyager compared to TNG. No one is that stentorian - loud Riker worked great in contrast to Picard, but here it just feels like he's chewing the scenery on a much subtler show. People on Voyager get angry, they get fierce, but they don't shout like Riker does. It sticks out a surprisingly large amount.

Kind of ironically, his performance as Tom Riker in DS9 might have been a better fit for the tone of Voyager.

I watched Hide and Q, last night. The bridge crew forgave Riker real quick for brain loving them with monkey’s palm wishes. I’m honestly having a ball with TNG S01. I have heard it get panned as the weakest, but I’m completely charmed by the classic script structure. And it’s really something that it’s 1987 television and everybody talks to everybody like they are peers. Crusher and Troi may have gendered roles, but their opinions are always regarded, their input heeded, and their authority respected. Then, again, the whole “we completely eliminated headaches!” thing inexplicably irked me.

Don't remember that line about headaches, but I know O'Brien has a headache in "Fascination" and it's "just a normal headache" so uh headaches are still around. Also, it may be because I'm largely high as gently caress watching DS9, but I've noticed the same thing about Starfleet officers and personnel just like having open and honest communication, almost no one having an ego or an agenda, everyone working towards nonviolent communication at all times and de-escalation whenever possible, and people taking one another at their word regardless of standing. It's incredibly refreshing and is a genuinely inspiring vision of what an egalitarian society would look like. It's just such a stark contrast from 2023. I'm always suspicious of a character's motivations or that there's going to be a reveal, but unless it's from a rogue entity or alien outside the Federation, there never is. It's a stark contrast to even SNW and Lower Decks, and Picard especially.

It works best in "Q Who?" when he's teaching the crew a lesson with alternating smug aloofness and somber import, and "Deja Q" where he's copping his usual self-superior dickhole attitude but without the power to back it up, everyone's just so over him.

Beginning of “The Battle”, the one where the Ferengi are pulling a Havana Syndrome on Picard. Headaches and the common cold are relics of a barbaric past.

I guess O'Brien lives in that barbaric past on a daily basis. I also love that the common cold is gone, but instead we have an infinite number of space diseases that kill us in new and horrific ways, seemingly at random. It's not so much that science has trivialized illness, but that illness is constantly outpacing science.
