I didn't watch the series much beyond the pilot, but this sort of scenario plays out almost exactly in The Diplomat, where the titular character is sent to the UK to try and calm down the situation, and then the senile old man POTUS undermines her by promising to rain hellfire on Tehran.

of course, in this fictional universe cooler heads prevail, and heart of the plot is watching The Diplomat managing to steer foreign relations through this bellicosity, but it carries so much less weight IRL because we've all come to understand that the bellicosity is the side that's winning in American politics.

Biden also said Xi was very embarrassed when a suspected Chinese spy balloon was blown off course over U.S. airspace early this year, making a personal comment on the Chinese leader when Blinken said on Monday the "chapter" should be closed.

It was unclear why Biden made the comments on Xi - China's most powerful leader since Mao Zedong after he secured a precedent-breaking third term as president and head of the Communist Party.

"The reason why Xi Jinping got very upset in terms of when I shot that balloon down with two box cars full of spy equipment in it was he didn't know it was there," Biden said at a fundraiser in California.

"That's a great embarrassment for dictators. When they didn't know what happened. That wasn't supposed to be going where it was. It was blown off course," Biden added.

What does it even mean outside of Biden is senile?

1 if it has spy equipment, why wouldn't Xi know it was there?

2 Biden said it was blown off course, why would anybody be embarrassed for it? Except Biden who shot it down due to domestic politic?

3 Sounded like Biden was kindof upset, maybe Blinken didn't get what White house wanted in Beijing visit?

Abram Temnik was born into a working-class Jewish family in the village of Chernigovka, in the Zaporozhie Region of Ukraine, in 1907.

After completing a 7-year school, he worked as an assistant train driver for a mill, and then as a skilled worker at a dairy.

He joined the Red Army in 1929. Temnik graduated from a military-political school in 1937. In 1939, while serving as a political instructor, he participated in the fighting at the Khalkhyn Gol River in Mongolia.

He met the outbreak of the German-Soviet war on the Western Front as the deputy commander of a brigade that succeeded in destroying 80 enemy tanks in Belorussia.

Abram Temnik headed artillery units at observation posts. He was wounded twice, but remained on active service. After leaving hospital, he was appointed commissar of a regiment. In December 1942 he was promoted to the rank of colonel.

Temnik participated in defensive operations in Belarus, in Smolensk, in the Caucasus, in the battle of Stalingrad, and in tank attacks during the liberation of Oriol, Bryansk, and Lvov.

In 1943, he graduated from a higher military-political course and, in 1944, he studied for six months at the Military Academy for Armored and Mechanized Troops. Subsequently, Temnik was appointed commander of the 1st Guards Tank Brigade.

Before other tank brigades withdrew to the Vistula River, the brigade led by Temnik succeeded in and holding the captured enemy positions. Then his brigade rapidly traversed westward over 450 kilometers, capturing more than 1,000 places. His brigade also played an important role in freeing Red Army units that had been surrounded by the enemy in the fortress city of Poznań. Temnik was twice recommended for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his brilliant conduct of the latter operation, but was only awarded lesser honors. The first time the headquarters of the Army lowered the award to the Order of Lenin and, then, the headquarters of the Front lowered it further -- to the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitskii, 2nd Class. The second time the decision to lower his award was taken in Moscow, which decided that he be awarded only the Order of the Red Banner. It is not clear whether it was the fact that Temnik's Jewish origin led to his receiving the lesser honor since it was a common practice at the time to award lower honors than those originally recommended. Another possible factor was Temnik's personality. As noted by Veniamin Mindlin, one of his officers and a fellow Jew, "Temnik was brave to a fault and very touchy. He tended to be quite sensitive to remarks of his superiors." (Mindlin, "Poslednii boi – on samyi trudnyi," Znamia, No. 4, 1985).

When the Commander of the Front Marshall Zhukov ordered the Commander of the 1st Guards Tank Army General Katukov to select the unit to enter Berlin, Katukov chose the 1st Guard Tank Brigade, which succeeded in breaching the defenses of Berlin on April 21, 1945.

In his book Encyclopedia of Jewish Heroism Fedor Sverdlov described this event as follows:

quote:

"The major attack took place in the area of the Anhalter train station, on Gneisenau Street. Without artillery support, the tank crews suffered heavy losses. Abram Temnik led a group of tanks to the Reichstag on April 28. The tanks advanced, but suddenly their commander's tank exploded when it set off a landmine. Seriously wounded in the stomach, Temnik continued to command his men until he was evacuated to a hospital." 1

Temnik died from his wounds on April 29, 1945. Within the short period between April 16 and April 28 Temnik's tank brigade killed 1,250 enemy soldiers, put out of action 54 machine-gun positions and 104 enemy guns, and captured 23 guns, 9 tanks, and 56 prisoners.

Abram Temnik was reported to have been buried in the Tiergarten in Berlin. However, there is some evidence to the effect that he was buried in a mass grave in the town of Liebenau (now Lubrza, Poland).

On May 31, 1945 Guard Colonel Abram Temnik was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for his exemplary command of his tank brigade during the Berlin operation and for his personal heroism. Overall, he was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner – three times, the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitskii, 2nd Class, the Order of the Red Star - twice, and various medals.

A school was named in Temnik's honor in his native village of Chernigovka, as well as a street in the town of Kopeisk in the Cheliabinsk Region.

Look, the whole reason Biden sent Blinken to China is that he wanted to get Xi to US in Nov. And then after the meeting he will call Xi a dictator again and levy some big sanctions on whatever China sector remain he can still sanction, just in time for the election. It's no different from the Trump 's playbook, except Trump got screwed by the NK summit and decided to turn on China a year sooner so he started the trade war 2 years before the election. By the end It got so serious Milley had to call China a couple times before the election. So Biden is basically going to do it but maybe with less shouting. Maybe more pushing and shoving in SCS. Milley is retiring so nobody is going to step on the brake for Biden.

But Beijing still got something out of it, they got US greenlit the big 3 semiconductor shops expansion in China; also basically no front page tension for a few months, so it won't help the DPP election. I had said it before, the current KMT president is TERRIBAD. He hosed up the candidate selection process and now the soft rear end KMT candidate is in number 3. If they have any sense, they will form a team with the current 3rd party candidate Taipei mayor professor guy and get a partial win. But I remain pessimistic. Also US turning around screws up Yoon's little anti-China drama.

One place to keep an eye on the is SCS. I am hearing chattering of China sending big ships to around second thomas shoul (the area disputed bw China and Philippine) and maybe China will start building island in Paracel Islands. (this part is disputed bw China and Vietnam and China took it from Southern Vietnam in the 70s so not a big deal. Its in the southeast side of Hainan island. So if building start, China probably had a talk with Vietnam privately already.) But I only hear them from Chinese youtube and Taiwanese pro-blue media, nothing from the Eng media so I don't know how accurate they are.-

I get the idea more that they're still so big dog brained that anything seen as remotely friendly overtures to China has to be immediately balanced out by chest-thumping so they still get to look like the big man. Trump's just more obvious than the rest of the ruling class in having the pathological need to 'win' every single interaction regardless of stakes or circumstances.

They didn't tell him whether he could meet Xi before his Wang Yi "interview", so US already scheduled that afternoon slot with "meeting with the US embassy staff family" event, but Blinken said all the magic phrases and got passed the mini puzzle and spent the afternoon sat at the big "U" table to get scolded by Xi instead. After that Blinken got his rear end out of China. The schedule was very tight.

Blinken probably reported to biden that he got absolutely nothing done on russia/ukraine/china relationships and re-establishing military talks again so bidens senile brain just defaulted to nothing got done period.

this is true, but said pattern of behavior directly stems from the fact that they've been able to get away with it for so long. like, in the minds of the us ruling class foreign policy is only actually important insofar as it translates to domestic support, they can't even fathom that completely contradicting yourself all the time might have negative consequences down the line
