I don't think long war 2 was ever "the mod of choice". It changes the strategy layer so radically (and not necessarily in a way that's actually an improvement), the only reason to go for it is if you specifically want that strategy layer.

There are plenty of other mods to play around with the tactical combat if that's all you're after. Or just the unmodded game has a lot to offer.

I agree with this

This is all good advice - I'll probably start with vanilla or lightly modded WotC and try Long War if the ennui of Summer makes me want something longer and more punishing.

There’s also a suite of “covert infiltration” mods that pull the most interesting mechanic from LW and apply it to a non-LW template. Haven’t played with them myself but there’s enough of them that clearly somebody likes it.

I love the covert infiltrations mixed with RPGO and it's pretty much the only way I play now. But it can take a lot of set up, especially if you like other mods like the workshop overhaul. There are a bunch of "bridge" mods to make them compatible.

Pretty much only the two previously listed mods of evac all and the gotcha one are mandatory for quality of life reasons. You might want to try mechatronic warfare to make your robots more fun, but I wouldn't really mod it more than that.

It's definitely something that can appeal to certain niche audiences, but it really does feel that Long War, at its core, is built on deep, seething hatred for the player, and all things reliable and consistent, and goes out of its way to NOT explain how the gently caress things work.

I cannot count the number of features it has that seem neat on paper, but SUCK in practice.

I remember when it was about to come out and everyone was excited about it - some googling shows they really revamped the strategic layer and I guess not everyone likes it? That's a shame.

I'll try unmodded again then, maybe, unless there's any other small or overhaul mods that people really enjoy.

Everyone was excited because LW1 did some cool rear end things and while divisive, was at least new in a lot of ways. LW2 was...well not that.

Long war 1 made a lot of modifications to the much less moddable xcom1, so if you wanted some of what it did or even generally a different experience it was one of the only options; xcom2 is infinitely more moddable so unless you want the specific flavor of dick punching that lw2 provides you can do lots of other mods

I honestly like most of the changes in lw2; the difficulty doesn't bother me since I just turn it down a level compared to how I play vanilla. The only things I don't like are the length (yeah, it's called long war, but it's still too long) and bloated number of missions. I'd love a version that basically kept everything except went back to vanilla style with a set number of missions in a month, just a few more and more months before you finished the game.

I might take a look at CI.

The final mission is long, but fine* and breaks the poo poo out of the games economy.

Now the second mission with the train... that is a horrifying nightmare.

*except for that pre activated cyber disk. gently caress that thing bursting through the door and killing someone if the player doesnt know about it. I don't know how that never got patched.

Honestly, Covert Infiltration is a perfectly fine step into one of Long War 2's few actually interesting systems, without the gunk that makes it suck.

Missions pop up, and you have to infiltrate a squad for a period of time before actually going on the mission, leans heavily into the Covert Ops, letting you deploy as many of those at a time as you want and separate them from the Resistance Ring, but they take longer.

But, over-infiltrating gives you bonuses that AREN'T simply "less enemies on the mission", combined with the fact that it doesn't skew experience away from kills and into simply completing missions so much that it reaches the point of actively discouraging combat whenever possible like LW2 does.

However, CI leaves actual combat alone, and doesn't have that god-awful Havens system that usually just results in you having no money ever because all your havens get flooded with Faceless every two goddamn weeks who spend all your income downloading viper porn.

In fact, other than the Covert Ops and infiltrating to initiate missions, it leaves most other systems alone; most other things it touches are optional plugins that are listed as separate mods.

I must admit, I don't like their change to the "Collect the Crates" supply mission though. It's annoying enough as it is, turning it into a "grab a few and get out before endless reinforcements slaughter you" is just frustrating when you're used to the normal version where you can, with good gameplay, get every crate on the map.

If you like the XCOM combat but want more of a CRPG experience I've been playing the 40K Rogue trader beta.

It is very much a work in progress and there's a ton of bugs at this point, But it absolutely feels like a crunchier version of XCOM when it comes to the combat. It's got the vibe so much I catch myself thinking "that's XCOM" when I miss like a 95% shot or only do five damage out of a possible 40 with lives on the line.

I picked XCOM 2 up since it was on sale a week ago. The final missions kind of caught me off guard, I hadn't even killed two of the Chosen. I saw all those options for spending intel on bonuses for the transmitter raid but I thought if that's a mechanic now I might need it for the next mission so I spent nothing, and similarly I went in with my C team rather than my A or B team to save the best guys.

I guess it made it more cinematic that most of them died before the psi-operative limped to the computer and pushed the button with her dying breath.

The A team proceeded to stomp the first half of the final mission (except for my Spark unit who got acid-ed by literally the first Andromedon and died because I had no robot healing) and then finished the final part by the skin of their teeth. RIP Jane Kelly, you almost made it. I'll never forget you bladestorming all those chrysalids as they burst out of the earth and ran at you on the psi-gate mission.

Fun game. Wound up spending about the same amount of time as I did finishing XCOM 1 about a decade ago.

Is anyone else have like a sub goal when they start a new run of XCOM 2 and when they achieve that sub goal, for whatever reason, your motivation to finish the run kind of peters out? For me it's killing all of the chosen. By the time I put all three down I kind of just lose interest in that run. I end up taking a break and by the time I come back I actually feel like starting a new run instead

It's legitimately one of the better video game soundtracks I've ever heard. The remade "original" tracks are great enough, but even the new poo poo like the combat music are some S-tier synthwave bangers.
