The game reviews bringing up the story and characters with regards to the slavery plot, come across as concern trolling and performative to me. It’s way more nuanced than they are making it out to be.

I'm extremely sensitive to frame drops and yeah quality mode does drop frames quite frequently. The worst offender so far was the very beginning eikon fight and the time you revisit it - I'm pretty sure it was down around 10-15 fps for a while.

I haven't quite got to Lostwing yet, I'm still in the forest, but yeah it's definitely not a locked 30. It's a shame, because it really takes me out of things, but I understand not everyone is impacted by (or even notices) it. I honestly wish I wasn't so sensitive to it. I also find flickering lights and strobes extremely unpleasant to the point of anxiety, which I assume is related.

It was so weird hearing the digital foundry dude gush about it that I almost feel like there's a bug with my system (maybe because it gets confused with a 1080p display?). For the moment I have to play in performance mode because the quality framerate feels horrible.

Barely 15 minutes in, there is a dude who's entire life is standing near a fountain and constantly casting water like a flintstones dinosaur appliance.

The game is not exactly being subtle about this.

Some high falutin games journalist said it goes off the rails towards the end as some sort of criticism. My friend, what game series to you think you are playing?

It's bullshit that FF7 starts with a corporation exploiting the planet and ends with an alien trying to summon a giant meteor to cause a mass extinction event. 2/5 stars.

I think, to give them the absolute benefit of the doubt, it's within a common species of criticism which basically amounts to "slavery plots are always about 'how bad would this be if it happened to white people' instead of explicitly representing the most recently relevant examples of real-life slavery, which was heavily racialized?"

The problem with this - among others - is that I honestly get a vibe of Valisthea as being closer to antiquity's totally normalized slave economies than either medieval Europe or American chattel slavery. Like, I get the issues, but I don't think that they're necessarily as damning as the reviewers feel?

I'm sticking with quality as performance mode is unbearable for me. It is smooth most of the time in quality, much more consistent than performance.

I've found that since getting an OLED frame rate issues are way more noticeable, probably something to do with the way the display updates.

I will say that the criticism that I saw in reviews that I do agree with is that gear and crafting is pretty much an inch deep so far.

Basically there’s always just a “right” answer (buy/craft whatever has the highest stats). There aren’t a lot of decisions to be made, and it’s extremely simple.

Like I got to craft a purple “boss” weapon but there’s nothing obviously different about it and I crafted a straight upgrade like…15 minutes later.

It’s just what they do now. I wouldn’t think it’s possible but they’ve leaned harder into inane clickbait bullshit than ever before. For Kotaku and Polygon in particular, half their content these days are these stupid goddamned takes and the other half is promoting a porn girl who uses twitch to funnel an audience of children to her paysite. The absolute state of these trash.

Yep. That is the entire system. Even the best weapon in the game is like that.

To be fair - yeah, what Sun said. FFs with meaningful weapon customization in favor of just iterative stat improvements are actually kind of an outlier.

Kinda makes sense to me both from an FF14 "gear ilvl is simply linear progression" and clover/platinum "ability customization is the important thing" perspective

Eh even in those games you had like elemental effects and such.

It doesn't bother me much, especially since equipment is standardized in Arcade Mode and Cronolith Trials but it does feel pretty drat basic even for FF.

My favorite thing about the story so far is that Clive is - against all odds and stereotypes - the most emotionally aware rpg protagonist of the last 20 years.

There’s been a couple of points where he could have fallen into a tropey response and he didn’t - like when Jill offers to come with him to Rosaria and he…accepts with a measure of humility. I was totally primed for him to act like a chauvinistic dick and he just…didn’t!

Same goes for the next narrative beat when he actually just owns his vulnerability without it having to be some big narrative arc.

Except when he isn't (but in a well written way). A while on from your spoiler when the two are turning in for the night, Jill says something along the lines of "I wished upon Metia for your safe return and you came back to me. The heavens must have plans for us." while leaning towards him and he just sits there awkwardly.
