I know the actual answer is because the mod authors love writing about Russia and see it as the protagonist of the mod, but is there some kind of in-universe explanation how the extremely shattered russian territories that have been basically mad max for a generation are supposed to be able to take on a victorious fourth reich once someone reunifies Russia

well, Germany always implodes after Hitler dies and comes out substantially weakened and can potentially end up even more fractured and mismanaged that it already is in this version.
Also, last I checked none of the Russia vs Germany stuff was actually in the mod yet so who knows how it'll actually go?

Also, I think it's supposed to take a full decade post-unification to be ready for the war? Which does add a bit more verisimilitude.

After rereading what you've posted I think you maybe haven't played the mod in a good long while, because you keep talking about a reunified Russia taking on Germany, but in the game you can't go to war with them at all, and if you did there's no indication that Russia wouldn't get steamrolled again. Granted I've only played a handful of the Russian warlord states and I don't know what you're talking about with hidden factories or lasers and poo poo.

Also the hidden factories thing is probably referring to the west siberian statelets, who utilize bunker systems and similar to protect industry from the german bombings? Which like, their industry is still rudimentary, that's one element of what they do to adapt to it and it's only them that do that.

The rewards are basically the same as for a product cycle launch: money, GDP growth, council seats for the developing company. As with product cycle profitability, the size of the reward scales with the number of weapons test benchmarks you meet.

WARLORD INSURRECTION IN CHINA

June 9, 1966
Nanjing, Republic of China

China is once more seized by upheaval, as today Long Yun, rehabilitated warlord of the province of Yunnan, has declared a “national crusade against the traitors to the Chinese nation.” Long’s militant organization known as the “National Protection Army” has for many months been growing in power in China’s southwest, alongside a reported influx of National Revolutionary Army followers as well as CPC remnants returning from exile in Indochina.

With rapid advances already underway, Long Yun and his supporters have made multiple explicit public vows to overthrow the current Chinese government installed by the Co-Prosperity Sphere, a claim Nanjing has resolutely denounced as the “delusions of a madman” while promising a swift end to the insurgency.

There’s very little we can actually do, as Nanjing feels our assistance would hurt more than help. We do recall the PTG from Indonesia immediately, though.

Other than that, all we can do is turn back to our next plan; kneecapping organized crime in Guangdong.

COMMUNIST VICTORY IN KAZAKHSTAN

June 23, 1966
Alma-Ata, Kazakh SSR

The once-divided nation of Kazakhstan has been reunified under the banner of the hammer and sickle. General Secretary and military leader of the Soviet remnants in Kyzylorda, Bauyrzhan Momyshuly, announced the end of armed hostilities in Kazakhstan and proclaimed the ultimate defeat over the “reactionaries that resisted the workers’ regime.”

The future of the reborn socialist state remains unclear. Although previously the Kazakh SSR was subordinate to the central Soviet authority in Moscow, the separated republic now finds itself in a situation where the state they were loyal to no longer exists, and many argue that Kazakhstan itself should become the center of a new Soviet Union.

Given Morita’s past actions, particularly his insistence on taking in unemployed Yasuda personnel, it’s clear what his choice here would be.

VEIKKO PIHLAJAMÄKI ELECTED FINNISH PRIME MINISTER

July 10, 1966
Helsinki, Finland

The results have been tallied in the 1966 parliamentary elections in Finland, and Veikko Pihlajamäki has emerged as Prime Minister designate.

A firmly conservative member of the Agrarian Union and a relatively inexperienced member of Parliament, he was chosen by the right-wing coalition to build stronger ties with Germany while also lacking ties to the locally unpopular Continuation War.

Germania has issued a statement of congratulation to the new prime minister, expressing a hope for further “inter-European cooperation.”

By August, the initial explosive advancement of the NPA has bogged down as Chinese reinforcements are rushed to the area.

Finally, the Morita, Li, and Ho’s plan to attack the Yakuza kicks into high gear.

While at the same time the day-to-day business of running Guangdong continues.

KOLA DECLARES INDEPENDENCE FROM FINLAND

August 2, 1966
Helsinki, Finland

After seizing East Karelia and the Kola Peninsula during the Continuation War, Finland has pursued a policy of encouraging its citizens to emigrate East and colonize the vast swaths of former Russian land annexed after the fall of the Soviet Union. However, resistance among the local population has been steadily growing and has now reportedly reached a breaking point.

Declaring their intention to secede from the Republic of Finland, the “Murmansk People’s Republic” has officially declared independence and stated their intention to ally with the newly unified West Russia in order to “protect the liberty of the Russian people.” No statement has been forthcoming from the government in Rykov as of press time. Apparently fearing the worst, however, Helsinki has announced a general mobilization in order to protect against “any possible threat.”

COMMUNIST INSURGENCY GRIPS FINLAND

August 13, 1966
Helsinki, Finland

Communist agitators across southern Finland have banded together and began a campaign of terror against the government. The communists of Finland, long persecuted since the days of the Russo-Finnish War, were inspired by the actions of the so-called Murmansk People’s Republic.

In many cities socialist forces have reportedly completely supplanted government forces, and an assault on the Parliamentary complex in Helsinki was only just repelled with the arrival of Army detachments. However, Helsinki is now surrounded and under siege, as what international experts are calling the Second Finnish Civil War begins in earnest.

WEST RUSSIAN SOVIET FEDERATION INVADES FINLAND

August 20, 1966
Helsinki, Finland

Addressing the nation in a live televised address earlier today from the city of Viipuri following the Finnish government’s evacuation of Helsinki by ship earlier this week, Prime Minister Veikko Pihlajamäki announced that Russian military units have crossed the border into Finland. While the state of the surprise Russian offensive is not known, attacks by the Murmansk People’s Republic against Finnish forces have reportedly intensified significantly.

With this move, the West Russian Soviet Federation has effectively declared war on Finland and the Finnish-created buffer state of Onega. As Russian forces advance west, a Soviet Federation statement was issued that warns of “dire consequences” if Finland continues to wage war against the Murmansk People’s Republic, and demands Helsinki “cease the war of aggression against the Russian people” and recognize the separatist People’s Republic as an independent state.

There are also rumblings of more discontent at home, although nowhere near as bad as Finland … or, apparently, Colombia.

COLOMBIAN CEASEFIRE BREAKS DOWN

September 10, 1966
Panama City, Panama

The armed peace in which Colombia has lived since a ceasefire was agreed to in 1956 has ended as the three major factions – the Central Government, the Colombian Revolutionary Union, and New Granada – have resumed their war following the escalation of a brutal skirmish that started several months ago for control of the Atlántico Department.

And it’s not long before the eyes of the world light up with yen signs.

With Republican forces mopping up the last of the warlord Long Yun’s forces, the situation is deemed stable enough to once again deploy the Product Testing Research Group abroad.

Not everyone is pleased about this, but it’s an open secret that General Nagano was elbows-deep in Hitachi’s coup plot, so he can just deal with it.
