Prigozhin released a video today where he claims that Ukraine never shelled Donbas, only Russia has. He said the whole point of the invasion was that the oligarchs in Russia wanted to install Medvedchuk as President so they could strip Ukraine of resources and businesses. He said the oligarchs weren't just satisfied with Donbas. He goes on to say that the whole "Ukrainian Nazi" thing was made other. He asks, if it was true why did Russia exchange Medvedchuk for Azov POWs.

The whole video is about 30 minutes long and it's being posted in bits and pieces all over the place.

Putin prefers his lackeys to always be fighting each other. As long as Wagner guy doesn't mention Putin or blame Putin indirectly, he gets to skate.

To me, it just seems like you do that to preempt potential opposition. I hardly think in Putin's Russia, he needed an excuse to lock down. I guess it's arguable if this strengthens his position if that opposition never happens.

Before the war, there were outbursts of civil disobedience. See the reaction to Ivan Golunov's arrest, Khabarovsk protests, and from the other end of political spectrum, protests against vaccination and lockdowns. Even actual controlled opposition like CPRF organised protests against voter suppression and electronic voting. None of that now. At best, some military wives are allowed to publicly complain about bad conditions in the military, but they never explicitly oppose the war, and more often outright support it, just don't want their husbands to be shipped to the front without any equipment.

New laws that make 'discrediting the army' a criminal have been introduced, and more and more people are arrested for high treason in cases related to the war, too.

The anti-trans bill that bans gender confirming care and that will likely pass very soon is also in many ways became possible thanks to the narratives around fighting the war to protect children from genders.

Russia used to be a personalist autocracy, and the pretence of being a democracy was important to preserve civil order. The war has definitely allowed to start moving closer in the direction of totalitarianism.

He doesn't criticise Putin. He says Putin is being mislead by oligarchs and weaselly ministers, but himself is still a wise and benevolent ruler.

Yeah, these are good points.

This is the funny thing, I wholeheartedly agree that the chance is absurdly low compared to the chance of getting killed in a traffic accident on the way. Even inside Ukraine, dying in a car crash is assuredly far more likely than getting smoked by fascists. But it's funny how you can be taken over by an irrational (perhaps rational?) fear when push comes to shove. The feeling is hard to explain, but it feels a bit like fear of flight if you've ever had it. You know the chance is very low, but the thought of ending up in a plane crash can be terrifying. It's irrational and you know it.

Yeah, that's just the way our brains are wired. No point in beating yourself up for feeling that way, or scoffing at someone else for expressing it.

Only rumors so far but I'm getting the impression that things are going to come to a head between Wagner and the MOD very soon.

https://twitter.com/sumlenny/status/1672308093244325890

e: some video's on telegram coming out, of an alleged missile attack on a Wagner camp by the RuAF. Not linking because of thread rules.

Whether the attack really happened or not, Wagner is definitely on the warpath against the MoD.

There is a video appearing on twitter now that absolutely looks like a missile strike on a forest camp, complete with body parts scattered amongst the shredded foliage. I do not recommend watching it.

Also, there are a bunch of other rumours flying around about the RU MoD making moves against Wagner and Prigozhin himself:

I've also been seeing some conflicting twitter talk about Ukraine managing to down some of the Ka-52 helicopters that are attacking their offensive. I can't tell if it's online copium, so hopefully Ukraine is still making progress. The Russian helicopters seem to have been causing Ukraine some real problems.

I'll tell you I didn't see this on my bingo card. I don't see this ultimately going well for Prigozhin but this is going to cause a lot of problems for Putin and the Russian government. Prigozhin and Wagner is not something they can just memory hole nor is fighting a war against two fronts, especially when one of them is basically on top of you.

In news from the other side: today Zelensky has fired Evgenii Borisov, the military commissar of Odessa, hot on the heels of a big investigation by Ukrainian Pravda (video, in ukrainian) that unearthed a lot of luxury property in Spain owned by several corrupt figures, including that guy.
Odessa was the source of the loudest scandals and viral stories connected with mobilization in Ukraine - videos of press gangs, shaking down recruits for money etc.
Good on Ukraine to take action on that front.
