And that was the typical "punishment" for walking away without locking your desktop/laptop. I brought it with me to next (and still current) job. A co-worker friend, who is also a goon, ran with it and basically became the Grand High Hoff-icutioner. People became EXTREMELY diligent about locking their systems only a few months after he decided take on that mighty responsibility. Proteus Jones has a new favorite as of 15:33 on Jun 23, 2023 |

Btw., sysadmin here. This is kind of common, because it's a neat trick to get people to lock their PCs. The choice of background varies, but it's always something mildly embarrassing. It works really well. You can make a game out of it (everyone who sees an unlocked PC gets to change the background according to some theme) and it becomes self-enforcing, doesn't have to involve srs business higher ups, and for the people who leave their PCs unlocked it's kind of embarrassing, but not seriously so. It's honestly a neat trick. Just make sure you pick a good theme before you introduce it into an org. Pick a theme so someone with a questionable sense of humour doesn't get stupid ideas, that's how changing backgrounds could stop being harmless.

A dude I used to work with and I did these desktop pranks fot years. Really bored at the job. He really got me one time, he was away from his computer and I had some random sticker in hand so I just stuck it on his screen in passing. He took it off, waited a couple of days, and then traced the sticker shape on his desktop backround and hosed with the area in Photoshop fully convincing me I permanently damaged his expensive print-calibrated monitor.

I changed their background to an upside-down picture of Shaq, then rotated the display in Windows 180 degrees. So the monitor hadn’t moved, Shaq was upright, but the taskbar and icons were all flipped and the mouse was reversed. I used to rotate people's screen if they left it unlocked, I think it was Intel's graphic drivers that had a shortcut so you could do it in one quick key stroke. Sadly that doesn't work any more on current versions.

One day I get pulled in to HR because someone thought the image was "offensive" or "obscene". Keep in mind that this is a company of about 20 people, most of them over 50, and most of those related to the CEO. I was asked to change it to something else, so I just went with a solid color. Today PYF has taught me that the key sequence to making friends in a new workplace is: 1.) Take screenshot of someone's desktop. 2.) Hoff their background image and take another screenshot of their desktop. 3.) Print the hoff-shot 3.) Set the hoff-shot as their background image and hide all the folders 4.) Open the non-hoff shot in an image viewer and set to fullscreen (between one and five instances) 5.) Tape the mouse USB. 6.) Hoff the underside of the mouse 7.) Take the printed hoff-shot and tape it shoddily over their monitor so they know they've called upon the wrath of the hods and it has been granted Optional: 8.) Prepare to undo the first half of these yourself, while someone packs your stuff Duuk has a new favorite as of 18:41 on Jun 23, 2023 |

At my previous job, the prank was to send something to the company-wide slack channel, like: "I'm going to treat the office with coffee/donuts. Let me know what you'd like" It created two main effects: 1. publicly shaming the person with unlocked computer 2. more creative/inconspicuous messages would get some traction before being figured out, thus doubling the shaming damage Ghod, I hated that place.

I had admin privileges on the corporate PCs as a teenager, and the older IT folks loved to play pranks on each other. The stuff I did back to them: Create a PowerPoint slide that autolaunches into Presentation mode that just consists of: I think I either put it in the Startup folder or told autoexec.bat to look for it. As soon as you boot you get a blue screen, but if you click you got out of it. I replaced every single default windows .wav file with some dumb sound file. I don’t remember what I used, but it was a spoken line from Office Space or South Park or something relevant at the time. This one had a super long payoff because the person didn’t have speakers at their desk. For a year nothing happened, then they remoted into their work PC from their house. The voice clips started playing constantly and scared the poo poo out of the victim. I replaced the Microsoft Outlook autocorrect dictionary with a custom one that included very stupid autocorrects like “Hello,” -> “Ahoy” and the victims names misspelled. Typing an email would cause Outlook to turn it into misspelled trash.

I hadn't realised the Hoff poo poo was so ubiquitous back in the day. Good office pranks in our place included stealing the ball out of someone's mouse and leaving a note with puzzle clues in its place, locking someone's desktop phone in their filing cabinet, hiding the keys and making many phonecalls. Two guys got into longrunning game of hiding each others mobile phones. The hidden phone had to be fairly close to the persons desk, but that was the only rule. The one location I remember took the owner hours to work out - the phone was hidden in the ceiling. It was one of those foam tiles ceilings that every office uses, so he just had to dislodge one, hide the phone and push the tile back in place. The foam tile made the ringtone really diffuse, so you could tell the phone was close, but not where it was. That was a really fun office, me, my manager, the IT manager and another colleague used to play mortal kombat at lunch every day in the boardroom using the big projector.

We call those 'drop tiles' or 'drop ceilings' because you just drop the tiles into the metal grid that carries them. The area between the structural ceiling and the drop ceiling is typically referred to as 'plenum space' as it can be used for temperate/filtered air dispersal.

My one lasting regret was not taking that typing class in high school. I wound up majoring in journalism at university. I could type fast and with fair accuracy, so long as I looked at the keyboard. I’ve had a 38-year career since, behind a keyboard. I’m older now, still staring at the keyboard, but now piling on tons of keystroke errors. So much slower than I was at 25-30. I did get good at touch-typing a calculator, and it just sends home how much less frustrating it would be to have the proper muscle-memory training from touch-typing. I tried an online Mavis-Beacon course on weekends, but one hour at work would undo it all. mobby_6kl posted:I used to rotate people's screen if they left it unlocked, I think it was Intel's graphic drivers that had a shortcut so you could do it in one quick key stroke.
