"Royalty is a continuous Cutting motion." Everyone's always focused on getting the Cutting part right, but maybe the important part is more about the continuous motion.

This was a good page. Trying to find the one true meaning or the absolute answer to life is pointless because there isn't any single right answer. All you can do is keep moving forward.

Excellent shounen protagonist "lol I dunno" attitude from Allison here. Good page no notes. Swords are still cool sometimes.

Glagha posted:This is not a snarky call-out, genuinely interested: what's wrong with it? Well I expected some answer like this from Allison, but it feels like the page undercuts itself with how busy the dialogue is. Fundamentally this is a ponderous enigma being answered with something very simple (one can disagree on whether it works but it's unquestionably in line with the rest of the comic's ethos) - but I think the simplicity of Allison's answer is weakened by all the dialogue. You have Meti's question already being pretty long (from Maya's previous account we know she tried to defend herself at first, but as presented it's just Meti's reiterating her point with no back-and-forth), you've got Allison dismissing Meti, doing a "it's how you use them" conclusion, making a phallic joke, hugging Maya and thanking her, making an implicit promise with the restaurant comment, bringing back the Maybe Sword, ultimately acknowledging she can't answer yet, and finally doing a callback to Zaid. All of these could work on their own but taken together it's all a bit much and doesn't really let you take it in. Especially with Maya's reactions being a bit strong compared to arguments that the reader has already been exposed to (again, this is just reiterating what's been explored before: swords are for losers, action matters more than wisdom, you're not beholden to the paradigms of the past, etc.). Maybe it's just me though, if the rest of you are any indication. YaketySass fucked around with this message at 23:05 on Jun 23, 2023 |

Swords are only useful for killing. And cutting Gordian Knots. Which I think Allison just did the metaphorical version of "I dunno they're kinda penis-y".

Well that explains what prompted the tweets about end of time narratives. It turns out the obvious answer to escaping an endless cycle of failure perpetuated by obsessive fuckups was to find somebody too dumb to be obsessed with doing things the Right Way and put them in charge.

The question and Allison's answer are very good. It wasn't that the question immediately broke Maya, she says she tried to argue with Meti. It's just that as she argued she realized how meaningless and horrible her actions were! It's good that Allison gets to ramble and meander to her answer, something that Maya couldn't do back then.

yeah, removing the narrative tension to the question is itself a form of answering it definitively

Allison sort of rambling in response is fine imo but sort of tonally undermined when everyone is doing it, even the otherwise very terse Meti
|
# ? Jun 24, 2023 00:32 |

yeah I like the shift in tone as defusing the drama of the question that hope can be both radical and mundane, is an enjoyable theme,, to me
