That child totally had it coming. Nobody should be able to be out at dusk except cars.

Pretty sure she was elected by the population at large, just not directly.

"During her final illness in May 1981, she was given the special title of "Honorary President of the People's Republic of China"."

This is after the 1979 Electoral Law of the National People’s Congress and Local People’s Congresses of the People’s Republic of China.
Which somebody correct me if I'm wrong because I just half assedely looked this up but that's the start if the current system of people electing a local official who all elect the next level who then elect the NPC.

Anglo policy for hundreds of years was (is) to smash the most powerful country on the continent. Hence conflict with Germany in WW 1 & 2 and then the immediate turn on Russia. I would not be surprised to learn the franco prussian war was egged on by the British.

a bit of idea just how hosed up they are: they confiscated farmers' land after the border war with china and rented that out to farmers. Then they felt that wasn't greedy enough, they sold the land to private entities and not even bothering to compensate the locals. Even the local mafias got pissed enough to start armed confrontations against the army

The leaked cables also reveal the US embassy’s mounting frustration with Rudd’s leadership, and their growing confidence in Gillard as an alternative. In particular, the Americans were bothered by Rudd’s independent streak in foreign policy.

A February 2009 cable complains of Rudd’s tendency to make policy announcements “without advance consultation” and for sidelining the Department of Foreign Affairs. For example, the cable cites one Rudd-government announcement, made jointly with the Chinese foreign minister, that Australia would not take part in quadrilateral talks with the United States, India, and Japan.

In contrast, another cable from June 2009 praises Gillard’s pragmatism and her “support for the alliance with the United States.” While noting that Gillard was a member of Labor’s Socialist Left faction, a 2008 cable quotes Paul Howes, then head of the right-wing Australian Workers’ Union, as stating that Gillard “votes with the Right.”

Of course, none of this is to say that Rudd was an opponent of US imperialism. Rather, the point is that the Americans saw Gillard as a much more cooperative ally. As the 2008 cable observes, since the election, “Gillard has gone out of her way to assist the Embassy.” The June 2009 cable also praises Gillard’s support for Israel.

Both Vietnam and Myanmar military have near monopolies on certain lucrative sectors such as national mobile phone networks. I am not sure about Laos and Cambodia but I wouldn't be surprised if they were.

The thing is, army doing civilian business with whatever resource they had to figure out half of their finding was a major characteristic of 80s China. Deng allowed it and encouraged it. It was part of the reform policies. Post-cold war Russian military was doing the same thing at the same time. But Jiang started pulling back those policies and it pretty much stopped by the 00s.

Didn't US had a hand in toppling the Kevin Rudd government? (and it's weird that Rudd went on to become chairman of The Asian Society, a US think tank, to submit to US dominance? I suppose?) Basically US will do it to any AlwaysTheSameMap government now if you are not US friendly enough. Maybe not countries that are too small like New Zealand.

It's interesting how the US tried to do it in Philippines but couldn't do it. (Narrator voice: Philippines is not in AlwaysTheSameMap)

I learned a little bit of Chinese history in an elective Asian history class at community college taught by an eccentric ex-air force white Baha’i convert who had learned mandarin at the Defense Language Institute. he constantly evangelized Baha’i faith but nobody was really offended because it came off as so non-threatening. he taught the class the phrase “cao ni ma de bi”

Absolutely yeah, about same as with Gough but they relied on byzantine party politics instead of a more regular coup this time.

Weirdly enough he ended up coming back to become PM again like week before the election he then lost where I'm pretty sure people thought there must have been a mistake on the ballot.
