Yes a 100% escorted propaganda tour of North Korea should do the trick. “This is the cleanest nicest city in the world with no crime and no homeless people.”

Visiting Cuba: “People are poor by western standards but happy and have excellent health care, they don’t need material things for a good life.”

Visiting Venezuela: “People are still engaged in the revolutionary struggle and everything bad is the fault of the CIA and counter-revolutionaries.”

People visited the Soviet Union in the 1930’s under the worst of Stalinism and reported back that everything was great over in Russia. Many of them were so deluded they MOVED THERE.

Or just visit Minsk. It's cheaper and you'll know everything there is to know about communism in a week or so when you hit the nearest store to get literally anything.

"Tankie" is a fun word and all but can we cut to the chase and just call them commies? Cause it's what they are. I know someone's gonna be like "but Marx etc., etc.!" But come on, that ship sailed generations ago. When people talk about "communists," this is who they're referring to.

Like if someone asks "why the hell would anybody be on Russia's side" and you tell them "they're tankies," you'll still have some explaining to do. But if you say "they're commies," they'll understand exactly the type of person you're talking about immediately.

No.

I hate to tell you this but everyone I met in Cuba seemed dramatically happier than the majority of people I meet any time I go to the US.

Like, LA is literally the worst place I’ve ever had the displeasure of visiting, and the rest of it isn’t a lot better.

John Steinbeck, the author of Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden and of Mice and Men, was a very highly cultured and sophisticated man, but such a Stalin and USSR fanboy that he actually wrote to president Roosevelt with his literature buddies and demanded that USA has to help Stalin on Winter war. Stalin tried to conquer and fully annex Finland pretty much like Putin is today trying in Ukraine, Steinbeck's reasoning was that being forced under the USSR occupation and getting under Stalin's thumb would help the Finnish common people against government's systematic oppression; a fact he basically pulled out of his rear end, still believing that Finland was divided after the 1918 civil war. Which was also caused by the USSR-backed communists trying to take over the newly-born independent country. That bit is written in his English wikipedia page if you don't believe me.

The man might have been a great writer about the poor laborers and how unjust the world is, but as a politician he was a complete one-note fool and its a crime that he is still a celebrated author and an cultural icon.

Or that guy who went to the Khmer Rouge and praised them non-stop even as everyone in his party was horrified at what was going on. Then one day he winds up dead and his friends are told politely, but firmly, to leave.

I'm curious if the Vietnamese toppling Pol Pot sparked similar reflexive waves of "The Vietnamese are CIA puppets!" back then, even as the CIA started supporting the Khmer Rouge to undermine the Vietnamese occupation and reconstruction of Cambodia. Honestly, you'd think more leftists would come away with the impression that the CIA is pretty bad at its job, like their portrayal in "Legacy of Ashes."

When the Amerikkkans support somebody i don't like, it's a proof of them being an imperialist puppet. If they support somebody i like, is a proof that western pig dogs are so dumb and greedy they will sell their enemies the rope to hang them with.

Yeah an argument against the appeal of a nation’s ideology becomes apparent when people living under it face imprisonment or death when they try to leave.

It was interesting reading about how at about the time Oswald defected to the USSR he faced hiccups as a Soviet effort to attract defectors from capitalism meant they were getting a lot of strange malcontents who were seeking a short sighted way to avoid dealing with their problems.
